I've been a moderator on OKCupid for about a year....which is how I know all their little tricks.

After seeing how many scam/fake topics there are and replying to a couple of them, I thought I would make a topic of my own. But help some of you out in the process. DH needs to understand when profiles are flagged there may be more than just a wrong photo involved.

A couple things you can do to check a profile for a fake/scammer. They use other photos they get from the net or other singles sites or open Facebooks..etc. Sometimes people that hack your Facebook, just do it to farm out the photos believe it or not. The ones from the singles sites will not show up in image searches, but they will only be at the size limit of POF or OKCupid. Most people do not automatically size their photos. An image search can also be done using Google Image Search or Tin Eye. Google generally gets more hits. However, just because an image shows up on Google Image Search or Tin Eye, doesn't always mean it's fake. Some people leave their photos wide open for the search engines to get to. Most times the photos link to online porn models. For men they are scattered.

Photos isn't the only thing to look for. Obviously a "Hi" or "Hello" for a message is all they put hoping to get a reply. Don't answer those, no matter how hot the person looks.

Here is a really good way to find the scammers/fakes though!! Highlight and copy at least the first 6 sentences of their profile info. Then paste it into Google and search. 9 times out of 10 you will get one or more hits to that exact text on other profiles on other sites. I once did that on OKCupid and it Google 10 other profiles ON OKCupid. LOL! Different people...men and women. Of course the text was altered a little just for that. This week, I've gotten 7 "Hi's/Hellos" in my inbox from people around the country. Every single one of them had a Google hit on their text. I didn't even bother checking to see if the photo was fake. One I just got a few minutes ago had jibberish in their profile text.
These scammers/fakes are lazy, they make so many profiles they just copy and paste everything and don't make up anything original. But be wary of that too of course.

Of course anything that looks like it's been translated badly....likely has because the person is actually in Russia or Nigeria or some other corrupt country.

When it all comes down to it......if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. BE CYNICAL on singles forums. It will definitely save you time and or money wasted on a fake or scammer. Even in the sites like this that have forum, because some scammers could be locals preying on people only in their area.

I've been approached by several military scammers. Almost all of them say they are stationed in Afghanistan and that they lost their wife in an auto crash. They also can not write proper English. Also most of them ask to message via their email address vs date site mainly because once you get hooked from that then thy delete their date profile. Google search usernames and email addresses helps a lot. There is tons of into out there on military romance scammers. Hope this helps
