The Dame had been plaguing his thoughts all day.
Every corner, every cityscape column and turnstile door he thought he'd find her. Or worse be seen and approached by her.
Sure, he'd knocked skulls with the toughest thugs.
Been branded by the local police force for questionable detective ethic .
But he had friends.
Many of them in fact and shop owners liked him.
At the grocery store he placed the bottle of wine into the paper bag he always chose over modern plastic.

On the way up to his flat on the third floor he passed a few of the other tenants, some he tipped his hat to politely, others brought almost a smile, like the kid and mom going out to walk the dog the landlord let them have with out a deposit. That sure set renters juggling about shifting giftings...he was a good manager and did different nice things, seemingly at whim and as it suited him.
He likened the folk as a moving sculpture before him.
On the third floor the elevator opened out and as he walked, grocery on the loose side of his body as the sportcoat was brushed away so he could fish for the apartment key, almost half whistling half humming in a distracted mode of floor watching as he approached and turned the key to the dim lighting of a shaded room.
As he pushed the door open with his foot he removed the key from the door, lipping it back into his trousers pocket.
He stood there for a nanosecond before realizing her presence standing on the hardwood floor in the middle of his living room, unmoving but even in the dark she had vibrancy.
Before she could speak he did.
'I knew you'd find me somehow but how did ...aigh-unggh!!!'
Those were the last words he uttered before the flash.
The bullet struck the bag of groceries, penetrating and shattering the gallon wine bottle before entering his heart.
He lay there, wine spreading outward quickly as the blood began to splay, slowly...a moving puddle extending.
