I really don't do the coffee meets. I figure if I can't spend $25 - $50 (depending on drinks or not) having someone join me for dinner on my expense, I better just stay home and wait for a better day.

You do have to consider your own budget. Spending money extravagantly may send a wrong message and is entirely unnecessary for a first date.

Choosing a medium priced restaurant that actually has good food and a quiet atmosphere sends the best message. That way you can have a little privacy and be able to get to know each other and feel more relaxed about it.

The idea is to have fun and enjoy each others company- and EAT and DRINK!

No one should go overboard on a first date. That doesn't mean it has to be McDonald's though.

I guess it begs the question of why you're going overboard. Is it something you wanted to do anyway and you thought you'd enjoy the company? When you didn't, it's their fault and you're blaming them for your decision?

Is it that you wanted to overwhelm someone and show off and it didn't pan out the way you wanted?

Is it that you're trying present an image of yourself that is untrue?

Going overboard implies that you didn't like the results from your effort, and that's on you, not on the other person. Going for the opposite extreme won't get you any better results because it's not about what you spend (and obviously decided would be worth it and could afford) or don't spend. It's about what you think would be fun and nice for the both of you.

Fishn ~ you !

I don't mind going dutch at all - but I totally agree with keeping the first date simple, while not going to either extreme ---

Mc Donalds I don't even eat at McD's.

Too extravagant -- just as

KISS --- Keep it simple stupid

first dates entailing a "room reserved" are hookups not first dates.

don't let one burn you for taking a gal on a proper date. (or you get the type that would go to a hotel room with a stranger they met off the internet on first sight) yeah that's sigh making for sure.

I don't know how or why you would say that. At least 50% of my coffee dates are far older and heaver then their pictures.

Affluent women are not impressed with displays of money spent on food as they eat the better restaurants often so its only a treat for those who are not fortunate to have this experience. More importantly is what is being communicated in the time together and this of course could be priceless depending on the man and woman and their willingness to share and enjoy the process...

i've found that it's better NOT to go on a boat on a first date... even though i've actually never had an actual date.... if they aren't used to boats, it can be a very tense and maybe a very wet date. and in the evening, the sharks come in, and they are attracted to splashing.
