I like the , "simplistec ruggedness"
from "hill climbing to hell raising"
Harley-Davidson has established itself
once and forever, as the pioneer Hog.

That "sound" pumps Harley-Davidson authenticity
through every valve, cylinder and exhaust note.

14 bikes so far... I've tried Japanese, Italian, German, and American... Guess I'm not looking for a bike as transportation, so much as a toy that I like to play with... that's why I'm on my 4th Harley.... It's sort of like a Rolex or a Benz.. if that's what you really want, then nothing else is going to do.

I put 10,000 miles on my 1600 Marauder last year. No problems at all. Wouldn't be nervous about getting on it and heading for West Coast. Just took for short ride, it's 20 degrees out there.

I would love to go for a ride, but I'm gonna wait till it gets a little bit warmer. A few years ago I would make it a point to ride at least once a month no matter what. It might be old age or maybe common sense, but I dont do that so much anymore!!

Harley-Davidson is not just a motorcycle,it's a life style. It brings people from all walks of life togeather. I have met people from all over the world and some of them have more than 1 bike and more than just a Harley. When people go on vacation they don't want to rent a V-Star or a Goldwing they want a Harley. How many people do you see with a Honda tattoo?

I have yet to find a motorcycle I didn't like, except when it dies in a crowd of fellow bikers . But thats all part of it! I grew up with an uncle who is the coolest biker on the planet! He rode an old shovel when I was a kid and I've been hooked ever since. I've had Suzuki's, Honda's, Yamaha's, and Harley's. I love them all, but the Harley's will always be my favorite. Its the history of it all I guess.

Why HD? If you have to ask you would not understand. I just think they looked better then the Metric bikes and the sound is Oh so sweet! I love Jap sport bikes and have one now and have had a few in the past. I have a 2007 HD XL50 all hooked up and love it, but I also love my 2008 Kawasaki Z1000 sportbike. I like to ride them both-depends on the mood and who i'm riding with.

To me HD is more then a bike brand-it's a style, a frame of mind and brotherhood.

I think the Status symbol they are supposed to represent are why most people buy Harleys. I have never understood why one would want to be uncomfortable on a motorcycle, and until a few years ago, that was exactly the case with most Harleys seen. Personally, I would prefer being ON a goldwing. As kids, we were ALL raised on motorcycles. On back, until we were old enough to be up front on our own, and having had the opportunity to be on more than one brand, I go back time and again to Honda.

Through the years I've had most all HD, Kaw, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha. Right now I've go a Triumph America (British), Oh, there's been Nortons, BSA's, and Triumphs mixed in through the years too. Take a look on your FLH, see how many parts on it are actually made in America. My british bike has Carbs from china, tires and electrical components from japan. Yours probably isn't much different. Assembled in America is probably a better statement, same with the cars too. Subaru built in Indiana not too far from you, Toyota plant in Tenn.

The waveing to all bikers thing.
I have ben riding for 53 years now and can't say when it started? But think it must have ben about the time the 2nd bike was built and the two met each other oncoming.
In my early days bikes were far less plentyfull and one was always happy to see someone enjoying what you did and everyone was waveing just like the Corvett owners do
and then their was the Iron fist that was born in the latter 60's that we still have today also with the nicest peaple on a Honda early 60's
I have noticed the age of riders is geting older and not nearly as many young peaple own & ride this I belive is because bikes are just to expencive for them to buy today for peaple in there teens & 20's & 30's [sad ] So now it's mostly peaple 40 and up and though there is still lot's of waveing us old folks are geting a little tired waveing to each and every oncomeing biker

I have had the good fortune to have owned three Harleys in my life.A 1975 Ironhead chopper someone put together.Kickstart only,my damn leg STILL hurts!and that was 12 years ago!A 1988 1200 sporty, and my current love, 1979 1340 low rider, shovelhead, kickstart(too lazy to fix the starter button;not important, gotta RIDE!)one cantankerous and touchy b*tch, but I love her she's all mine!I carry a small pair of vice grips, two screwdrivers(flat and phillips),and an allen pack.7 years now,and no matter what falls off or quits working,I have ALWAYS made it home!...Ya know why they call 'em Harleys?Cuz they "Harley" ever run!Know why they're so loud?Cuz when they do ,ya want EVERYONE to know!LOL
I have had a bike since I was 16.Started with Hondas, with the Harley ALWAYS in mind.Just a matter of personal choice, besides,I just bought the bike so I could wear the clothes!!

Well, let me make this as simple as i can, because it seems that you are a simple man! Not everyone can afford a harley. (sorry about your luck) When i pass a car, the people wave and all most cheer when they hear the ROAR OF MY HARLEY. I have seen jap things pass the same car and the people just sit there. What does that say to you? (it should SPELL PRIDE) I put about 12000 miles a year on my harley, change the oil and tires and go again. If by any chance it breaks, i can work on it, i dont rely on a dealer. Try that with a Jap bike.(lol)Been riding Harley all my life and will not rige anything else. So,keep ridding your (wing-ding-ding-ding-wing-ding-ding-ding)untill you can afford some pride!!! Eddie

I have ridden for 43 years. I average more miles than you claim and other than flat tires have never had to fix a Japanese bike on the road. And to me motorcycles have always been performance machines and the 65 hp Harleys do not perform like my 125 hp bike. I am sure that the Harley lovers have their reasons, but I guess I buy and ride for different reasons. I have no complaint about the Harley people that actually ride, but from my experience they are a small minority of the Harley owners.

No offense, pal, but that's really, really stupid.

Aside from the fact that it's just rude, how would you feel if somebody cut you off in traffic and caused you to lay down your Harley and you were lying on the pavement in a bloody mess, and I just rode by you and did nothing to help, because I only help people who ride foreign bikes?

Cliques and clubs are the norm, but you're taking it to a ridiculous extreme.

I've had 7 bikes; three Kawasaki KZ series, 1 Yamaha, 1 Harley and two Suzukis - all cruisers.

I bought my current 2005 Boulevard M50 because, flat out, it's the most physically comfortable bike that I've ever ridden and I didn't have to take out a mortgage to get it.

And since I'm riding it, and I paid for it, my comfort trumps anyone else's opinion.

Personally, I've never liked Harleys too much.

I don't like bikes that are excessively loud for the sake of being loud. I think Harley's roadtime-to-repair time ratio is atrocious. I think they're needlessly expensive to buy and maintain. I think Harley accessories are grossly overpriced. And, most important to me, I think they just aren't that comfortable to ride.

I've had four spinal surgeries. So riding comfort is priority #1 for me.

These are my opinions, and they're submitted respectfully.

Because Japanese bikes are just too plastic for me.Some of their gas tanks on their cruiser's are plastic!Never mind their fenders.Harley put's a LOT more effort into their design than the Jap bikes.I have four bikes, two are Harley's and two are choppers. The Harley's are a 1991 Heritage Softail and a 1981 FXWG(Wide Glide). My choppers are a 1973 Triumph 750 Tiger, ridgid frame with a springer front end.My other chop is a custom I built from the ground up.It's NOT a kit bike,I made my own frame, forks, handlebars, sissy bar and oil tank. It's 10 and 1/2 feet long with 46 degrees of rake and no telling how much stretch! Now it does have a 5 horse Briggs go cart engine on it,but hey,it's just a play toy!

I have been riding since I was 12 years old. I have owned at one time or another about every different style and type of bike out there. Don't have anything bad to say about what you may ride. I will always own a Harley. I own and proudly ride a 1976 shovel. Out of all the bikes I have had, this one just makes me feel good, from the moment I kick her over until I shut her off and drop the kickstand. The sound of my old jewel if like no modern 100,000 mile bike,it's raw thunder! When she idles, she sounds like a heartbeat, and between each du,du, she stops for a moment, takes a breath and does it again! She is content with a lazy 55mph and feels so good at that speed that I am content to ramble back roads and byways, and enjoy the sights, lets me see this country from a different point of view. When shes sittin' there, idle, I don't mind lookin' at her either. She's got the primative mechanical look. She doesn't have fuel injection, or computer managed this or that, so if you turn up the wick, she might even shoot some fire from her drag pipes, so she has a little fire breathin' devil in her! When she is parked, just sittin' there, I feel good just lookin' at her,in fact, if I ever stop ridin' I think I will put up on the porch where I can look at her everytime I go in or out! For all that she does for me I don't mind giving a little back. If she breaks, which doesn't happen often, I will lovingly get a wrench and fix what ailes her! On top of all this there is a bond between the people that truely know the meaning of the relationship I have tries to show you a glimps of, a bond because they like you, know that feeling! It make them gather together and celebrate there way of life, it instills in them a respect and code of honor for there kind! It is an American way of life! I am not an armchair biker. I do not know how many miles are on my old girl, speedo broke at believe it or not 1313 miles and I just had to leave it alone, but I can say its more than a few! Harley Davidson is more than an adventure, its a way of life!Ride safe, I'm out.

I bought my last bike From Latus HD in PDX, oddly enough the bike I bought was a 1600 Kawasaki, Vulcan. Now, Ive read alot of idealistic predjudicial bs, and some open minded opinions. to each his own in this forum...
Fact: 6 years in the US Navy Left me 100% disabled, and missing my left leg.
Fact: 2 kids, and two divorces left me 100% taxed and the kids being in college now...? Im Bust.

I need a bike to maintain my sanity. Ive ridden dirtbikes since 5 yrs old, and at 40, never been without a bike. I preferred Harleys because of a girl... Miss Information.
As long as your ridin, you probably understand, and, my 1600 4-cyl, does anybody have the tech knowlege for the dcb's blasting out of the debaffled pipes? A heavy cruiser will change your life, if not your attitude. My personal narrowminded bs predjudice is against these scooters and the no power danger they are to me if I f up and wave at one thinking its another cruiser...It dorks you out! right?
A man asked me last week, why didnt you just buy a Harley?
BECAUSE IF IT ISNT OBVIOUS TO EVERYONE, HARLEY, DOES NOT, MAKE THE VULCAN, Hands down my favorite bike so far.I still wear the same vest Ive had, with my NAVY patch right at the top. Topic suggestion? Why NOT Harley Davidson.

Recently sold my 1949 Police special, still running perfect after all these years, and can still find ANY part I may need for it. Try and find parts for a five year old Jap Crap. Yes, I have ridden several, in fact a new 96" Streetglide this year. I would not trade my Honda for it. The hp difference is obvious. If I remove 2 sparkplugs and filled my saddlebags with rocks, I would have something close. The only answers I have heard that make any sense to me are the emotional ones. If Harley is what you are after emotionally that is fine, but I simply do not understand. Some of the answers obviously come from people that have no real defense for their choice and become antagonistic. You do NOT need to defend your choice, I am just like to understand. For the guy that thinks buying a Harley will make him tough!! Good luck!

Harleys are the only thing I have ridden! I had a 2003 Sportster Hugger & LOVED it! Lost it in a divorce I don't mind if other people ride something different, this was what I learned on & it was love at first sight! I agree with the statement " If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand. Hope real soon I can get another one, I REALLY miss riding

for me its personal choice that i made years ago, not that it would make me tough, which is shit talk...when you ride a harley your part of a brotherhood to which i have made great friends from...when have you seen 100,000+ hondas get together for a weeklong party...i havnt but to each is own for what makes you feel good.....* harley riders are a dime a dozen, but a true biker is a rare breed*..........

My HD has become like a child to me.She's outlasted 3 wives ,never asks why and never throws things at me!lol I put about 12k miles a year on my 65 pan dresser and have done this for 20 of the last 22 years. It takes mech. ability and a lil money to keep her going ,but she's priceless to me!Harleys become a way of life if you truly are passionate about what you ride.

Although I'm primarily a boat mechanic, and good enough at it that I've owned and restored 3 antique airplanes, I worked as a motorcycle mech 3 years in Mexico City, where there are thousands of HDs, its where all the Police Harleys go to die, and 2 years in San Diego. They're fun, they definately are a pleasure to own and ride but are not the be all and end all of motorcycles. In San Diego I rode an FJ 1200 with 100K miles on it. My question is this; In California the HD owners had the same basic bikes, wore the same helmets, had the same tattoos, the same clothes, the same sneers for Jap Iron, rode in clusters, and why? to show their individuality! A V twin with 45 degree separation, One journal on the crank, fired by one ignition coil. Figure the timing. Thats why the distinctive sound. Thats why HD got out of racing in the late 60s, with the intro of the first rice rockets. and thats why, on Monster Garage, Jesse James dyno tested a new 88 C.I. HD at 64 HP.

By the way, When I worked on Bikes in Mexico City, Police would come by the shop for minor adjustments on their mainly 80cid HDs, mostly bought at Police auctions in the US. I found out there are 2 warehouses in the North of Mexico City FULL of HD parts, frames, partial bikes, nuts and bolts etc. Someone could probably go there, arrange to buy what to them is scrap, load it in a semi or two, arrange permits, probably easy since it all came from the US originally and bring it up for whatever.
