The first time I saw a chart it scared me to death - I remember thinking how it the hell do you read that! About three years later, my first winter in Wyoming - when I got an issue of McCall's Needlework and there was a simply Christmas design - just a house covered in snow and Santa and his reindeer silhouetted in the moon. I decided since 40 below was just a bit too cool to be out in for fun I would give it a try. Been doing it since. I have sooooo many patterns. My last two projects were a cheetah and a logo of a friends - I did that on my PC Stitch - didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. He should get it next week so I will see what he thinks. Anyone else enjoy this? Would love to compare notes and maybe learn a few things. Like how to work on the higher count fabrics.

I used to do a lot of this when I was younger. I've sort of been wanting to get back into it, but cross-stitch is one of those things that I start, then stop, pick up later and then put down again... so I can only ever get myself to do the small ones. I'm probably going to make a few Christmas-y ones to accent some homemade gifts I'm giving this year.

I like it, and do it a lot. Right now I'm working on a small piece - a quote from Forrest Gump........"They asked me if I was running for women's rights...women are always right.

I am surprised at how easy and fast it is. I have made jar covers from patterns in Woman's Day and also a
"painting" of a bouquet. Now that I am retired, want to do more. Only problem is that so much of the designs
is "cute' or corny stuff, and I don't care for that. But perhaps some hip designers will come up with some
new patterns for us. I love the ones that win in the State Fair, just fabulous.

Alice what kinds of patterns are you looking for? I know what you mean by cute and corny - I personally like animals , but want ones that look as realistic as possible. Or at least as realistic as I can find. If you give me a few ideas I may have something more to your liking. I have tons of patterns.

Thanks. I like designs of fruits, flowers, designs, oriental motifs, paisley, abstract designs. If you crochet, you
may have or have seen some books from Japan. I crochet quite a few Japanese designs. My house has
a mix of antiques from past generations, original art from relatives and self, and my own hand mades. I like
60's designs, Peter Max stuff, happy California colors like pink, orange, tourquoiss, lime green, etc. If you
have some abstract cats or hippie designs, that would be swell! I have a huge collection of crochet from 30's on
to present, but mostly 50's and 60's designs as well more modern designs. It is a fun time to be a crafter, as there
are so many young, hip people designing right now. (for us who are young at heart!)

There is a program that you can download which allows you to take an image from the computer and it will produce a cross-stitch pattern of the image. I can not for the life of me think of the name of it, but you might want to do a google search and see if you can find it. One of my roomies used the program to make some really awesome custom designs.

Hobby Ware.........the best. Good instructions and extremely user friendly.

You might also try eBay.......there are tons of patterns there.........plenty for us "cutsey, corny" lovers and plenty for those of us who are not.

I taught myself how to cross stitch, hardanger and crochet! I have moved away from cross stitch because my eyesight seems to be going bad for my up close work. Crochet is easy to do because its not next to my face to see it. But I really love to do cross stitch! Miss it a lot and need to get back into doing it. Really love realistic patterns but do some cutesy ones too.

PC Stitch is a program I use for creating cross stitch patterns from photos. I for one love to work with the higher thread count fabrics. I stitch over two threads. Love the look on those type of fabrics because it creates a smoother look. The Aida cloth holes show too much when you have an open background.

I actually tried to open a needle art store here in CT back in the middle of 911 and the Anthrax scare. All my stuff is sitting in storage and getting destroyed by mice. Not really happy about it. Was hoping to open a new one someday.
