Hope that's not too vulgar for anyone. Tried to think of a nice way of saying it.

Basically, we've tried a couple different litters and they do well to cover when he does the other thing, but when he urinates it always smells for a long while. He's a male cat, so particularly pungent urine to begin with. I think part of the problem is that he doesn't bury it when he urinates.

Is there a litter that will handle that? I can't bend over and bury it for him afterward with the scoop or something. He's an indoor only cat because of where we live (traffic, wild animals, etc) so it's only the litter box.

I appreciate any help y'all can give me on this one. I love my kitty and I need to find a way to deal with the smell.

Thank you,

Daniel

Neither will one of my cats. She does not bury anything! She is also a very "top cat', which I have read may have
something to do with it. Basically, I think you have to live with it. I am just glad when she uses the box!
Keep trying litters. Most cats like a very soft, sandy litter, and it must be clean. Also, does the box itself need
changing or at least cleaning? Finally, is it in an area that is accessible, not too cold, and fairly private? Some
cats will not use a box that is enclosed, or in a cold area like a garage, etc. PS Daniel, make sure you have TWO
boxes if possible, each in a different location if you can. Sometimes that helps. I have a small house and not
possible now, but in a larger house I did. You can try two litters and see which one is better. As in most things,
usually you get what you pay for, though I find that Dollar Store litter is used by my cats and is just as good
as the other basic litters. It's a very aggravating problem, I know. What's funny about Angie is that she
also uses the bathtub, right into the drain! Best, Alice

there are all sorts of litters you can use. try a cedar litter. if that doesn't help, try using a scoopable litter. with that the urine becomes a solid little circle. you just scoop it out and throw it in a garbage bag. you just take that out and toss it in garbage can. there are lots of brands that make scoopable litter.

Hi Daniel,

Is he neutered? Male cats that aren't fixed have a very strong odor to there urine. And if he isn't fixed he may leave it uncovered to mark his territory. Do you have other cats? My advice....1st get him fixed, then get a good hard clumping scoopable litter (Tidy Cat and Arm & Hammer are a couple, get the kind for multible cats, even if he's an only child, ) and try to keep his box as clean as possible. Some cats just won't dig in the litter if its not clean, can you blame them? Good luck, hope this helps.

I agree with Shalem......unnuetured male cats do have strong odor.......and the sand clumping litter is the best......if the cat still won't cover it......pour little in the box and everytime he finishes just pour a scoopful of litter on top without bending down. Glade plug in next to the litter do help to reduce repugnant smell. Good luck.

My best advice for you, do what I did. I have 4 indoor cats, and I went out and bought 2 covered litter boxes at Petco for $20.00 each. They have a filter on top that "catches" the odor, and you have to replace it every 5 months or so. They have greatly improved the smell!! Also the best litter I have found is Tidy cat Clumping formula. My male Flame Point Siamese won't bury his urine, but does his feces, and the litter actually clumps it up and so it's easier clean~up.

Another thing I have found useful..clean the cat litter out everyday, cat's will start going other places if there box isn't "clean enough" for them. Cats are picky creatures and are VERY clean animals, except there mouth's and what they eat. lol

Hope this helped!

I forgot all about the covered litter boxes. I wonder if he'll use one and if it'll fit where his litter box goes (there really is no other place to put it. This is a tiny apartment.)

I'll try the Tidy Cat. The stuff we're currently using is Arm & Hammer multi-cat scoopable (even though he's one cat.) It leaves a perfumey odor, but doesn't eliminate the fecal or urine odor very quickly (takes an hour or so to fully diminish.) The odor of the litter itself isn't altogether pleasant and is irritating to my nostrils and lungs.

I can't bend over to scoop the litter box, so it falls to my roommate (it's his cat too.) He does it once a day, but it's really not often enough. It really needs scooping 20 minutes after each time kitty uses it. He does change it out completely about once a week.

Thanks for the advice y'all.

Ok I measured the covered litter box I have..and it's around 17 inches tall.

It's pretty small...and it's plenty big enough for two cats per box...just be glad you don't have 4 cats inside like we do...One is a senior cat who lived outside for 12 years of her life, another doesn't have her front claws..so she can't go outside, then two kittens (Both under a year old) who are afraid of the outside world...LOL

Oh and I was looking at my tidy cat...it comes in a plastic container with a screw on cap, it says "small spaces" on it. So since you live in a tiny apartment..that should be perfect for you!!

Hope all is well daniel!!

Thanks. I'll make a petco or petsmart run this weekend. I'm sure Niko (the kitty) thanks you too.

Daniel, I threw away my covered boxes. The cats hated them. They trap the odor, which is nice for humans, but
stinky (think Port o Potty) for the cats! Just my experience. I use a large box and change it often.

I agree. Stinky for the cats.
I kept the bottom part, but threw away the top from the covered litter box. My cats would use it once or twice and then didn't want to go back in. Now I just keep a large litter box and scoop out several times each day and then change it completely at least once or twice each week. I like to use a natural litter so I can scoop and flush without damaging pipes.

Again, though, I think you should use a scoopable litter so it can be scooped, thrown in a garbage bag and tossed outside in garbage can.
JMO.

This is why you have to buy one with a filter on it. My cats don't have a problem with them. I'm not saying get the one that's completly covered..the door is still open. And if you change it often (Which you should do anyways) then it shouldn't be a problem. Cats are stinky creatures on there own, just like ferret's and other animal's in that catagory.

I do use a scoopable litter. I always have. The problem becomes that it only gets scooped once a day. I can't bend to scoop it myself so it falls on my roommate who does it once a day. The other problem is that you can't scoop right after the cat uses it, so you have a period of time when the odor is incredibly strong.

My former cat used one of those covered litter boxes and as long as I changed the filter and scooped it regularly it wasn't too stinky for him or I. I forgot all about the covered litter boxes because we bought what we thought would fit where his litter box goes. I'll measure it though to see if the covered one fits.

Thanks all,

Daniel

Funny story...I was cleaning out the litter boxes the other day, and my kitten who isn't afraid of much..comes right over, and crawls right in and proceeds to #2..Ok he's one stinky cat!!! LOL

But anyways after he got done, I just scooped it right up, I'm telling you that litter works so fast!!! I mean I didn't have to wait or anything!! haha Just thought I'd share that with you...I get it at Wal~Mart for around $12.00

I've enclosed some pictures...Not mine, but looks just like mine!!

I think one just has to try several boxes and litter to see which one works. I have one cat who prefers the paper
OUTSIDE the box, just I just lay lots of newspaper down and pick it up daily or twice daily. I had a cat who made
middens outside. Middens, if you do not know, are where an animal defecates on same spot and makes a small
hills. She was indoor/outdoor kitty and used the same spot daily for months until I made her an indoor only
kitty. She is my good girl who will use any litter as long as it is clean, but she did not like the covered boxes.
I had a large one from Dr Foster that was 4 ft long and 2 ft high, like a chest. The other was just a regular plastic
PetCo one. My middle cat refused both of them. She is a dainty cat who does not like to be seen in the box
and prefers it in a far corner. Angie, my youngest, at 2 years old, is the one who does not cover anything,
regardless. She is the one who prefers the bathtub drain!

I have one that goes in the tub or on the bath mat outside the tub if the litter box isn't clean enough for her. How funny. I have another one that would pee on my son's bed on occasion. Not sure what was up with that.

I use scoop away, and it hardens really quick. I have a kitten that likes to watch me scoop, then go in and "baptize" the clean litter. I can scoop it out immediately.

Male cats are definitely have a stronger odor. Getting him neutered will definitely help.

Here took a pic of one of babies..on top of the litter box. It's so clean that she is willing to lay on top of it and take a nap...also another thing for odor..go get those "stick on's" that are deodorizers...you can clip them on the top part of the inside of the lid..it helps trust me

your cat seems to think its ok not to bury because hes around other animals who dont bury thir waste. if your litter box is anywhere near the other animals you need to put it somewhere where he can use the box properly. i use freshstep it kills odors great. my cat is anside as welll .try it.

Well, the only other animals in my home are the two human types, but his litter-box is in that room. It's the only place there's room for it.

It is such a challenge in a small house to have cats. Some houses have laundry rooms, back porches, patios and so
forth. Some, like mine, do not! I have used screens, boxes, bought fancy covers to hide/disguise it. Somehow,
though, we get by, the cats and me, day by day. I change the litter and the paper around it, sweep, and just try
to keep things clean. By the way, have you tried the "good cat!" praise and reward? Our cats are not dogs, far too
smart for that, but I found with Angie if I could immediately praise her and give her a treat, she at least got the
message that going INSIDE the box does pay off. She has been the hardest cat I have ever had as far as using the
box goes. At one point, I was ready to let her have the bathtub and just clean up after her, since she always
hit the drain. But, sharing the bathroom with other humans makes that impossible. Sounds like you are going to
be experimenting with litter and boxes, and hopefully, something will make a difference. I assume he is neutered,
because male cats of course spray anywhere and everywhere, and neutering helps. Here is one more idea which
may help. I know he is an indoor cat, but do your cats have access to outdoors via a windowsill enclosure? I bought
an extension that sets in the window and cats can go through a door into the "cage" and sit outside in fresh
air and sun. It really calms them down, even Angie! Some cats just have a hard time with life in a small house
indoors, I have one who would be a barn cat if she could, and having sunshine time seems to make her happier, and
that makes for fewer "accidents", I have found. It was 150 bucks, ordered it online.
