Yes, some men do. Before I became disabled myself, I dated women who had disabilities. Their disability was never a cause for breakup, rather character was the cause. I have found that most abled women don't want "damaged goods". Call it shallow or whatever, but it's true and I have been told that by the abled women I've dated. For instance, I have MS. I dated an abled woman who told me that she could never be with me because of of my future prospectus. I mentioned to her that I'm lucky in that I know what is wrong with me. What about all of the people out there that are "walking time bombs". The men and women who may drop dead of a heart attack, stroke or some other fatal event that they are not aware of, a month after you meet them? Women in my age group seem to want someone fit and athletic. Curiously, it's my observation that one third of all the women in my same age group are widows. Go figure!

It seems that everyone, or most people are seeking that perfect person, that doesn't exist. I don't care about much in the phony baloney what do you look like, but I DO want someone who is real. You are right about the walking time bombs. What makes the unknown more desirable? And if that stroke or heart attack happened, would you stay or would you go????

Hollywood, movies, and all that jazz isn't real. This is real. And I wouldn't trade one day of reality for Brad Pitt. I want what's real. My good friends, they have stood beside me. Everyone else? They have splattered away faster than grease from a fried hamburger! (How's that for a clever analogy!) LOL. Remember to laugh and love anyway. And maybe there is that someone out there for me. Ciao, Sue

My disability is not instantly visible.

Seems like most men want perfect. Well, guess what world, you reach a certain age, you're no longer perfect. Wrinkles, sore back, gray hair, no one is perfect.

It's painful to get rejected when you have a disability there is nothing you can do anything about.

We have to find contentment, peace and happiness being single. That's just the way it is.

I would think at our ages more are accepting knowing with age comes issue's

It's part of the process that occurs naturally even without a disability

So think of it as...Some are finally where you're at

It works

As far as a date goes...if I was to go dancing that first spin I would be dizzy BUT many will be drinking and due to that they as well would become dizzy..so now I have it made

Due to age many now become forgetful..memory problems...yep again I am now in the "safe zone"..cant feel left out now LOL

Yes ppl date others with disabilities and if not wait a few yrs and they'll be catching you to you

A disability can be controlled in the mind for many..if you are able to do that..You're ahead of the game

I attend a couple support groups now and a therapist who hardly sees eye to eye with my type of thinking at all. SO many people tell me I need to "find my myself before setting out on a relationship goal".......I divorced about four years ago when my dormant bipolar raised it's ugly head and destroyed my job, marriage, life, friends, everything after about 46 years......

I didn't see it as a big issue what-so-ever untill I saw everyone in my life slowly moving away from me....then I came on here and saw how people treated me...I didn't see this at all at first, yes I had an illness, big deal, back then I seen it as a cold.. boy was I wrong.....it was a big slap in the face, an awakening to something I never knew about before.........and as for as my therapist and all those others "I have found myself after four years believe me"....I KNOW I need a real relationship to survive, otherwise I see no use of going on........

Now my wife lives with her aging mom and says she loves being on her own now after 26 years of a perfect marriage and three terrific grown graduates out on their own, two here close to mom's apron strings, one married out in SLC, UT her final year of veterinarian school ready for her recidency...my wife really wanted on her own, or was it me?......BUT I had never been on my own and can't take the idea...

I NEED someone in my life...Of course my family, friends, even though they have gravitated from me, I have my physicians, hospitals, I was born and grew up here so I can't really move now...There's alot of women in a city of 2 1/2 million. where are they?....but it seems like now I will have to meet a woman who understands me and what I'm going through, it 'appears' the rest of the population has their stigma against us/me/whatever....it's ashame...It's so early in the morn I hope I know what I'm typing....

Hey Sue...I looked at your profile..sighs..ya know what.. I think you should remove all that about the stroke and bi-poler etc...dont let that be your focus as you have done so, cause thats the first thing you read about

It is ok to keep that somewhat private until you begin to talk with someone

I do hope you understand what I'm saying to ya and that you dont take it the wrong way..Honestly I am just trying to help ya out

After reading all the replies here my heart really goes out to you all.
I feel as if I really know each of you in a very personal way

This has been the first time in my life since Nov 2005 that I have not had a partner.

Before that I was married for a total of 20 yrs..14 to one/6 to another

It wasnt my disability that caused the end of my marriage..Mine came after a car accident in 2001. In 2007 I was approved for SSI after my 6 yr marriage ended..It ended with me kicking his a** to the curb for very good reasons! Then he left the USA knowing he has children with me ..never have heard a word..nothing ..zip

I didnt think I wanted - matter of fact I didnt want another man in my life

You put all your heart and soul into a marriage and due to circumstances its ends.

Sometimes I have thought..why even bother any more..I mean really does it make any sense anymore to ever go through the heart ship again

First time alone at my age with 2 young kids and broken..never thought this would ever happen not in a million years-but it did.

So here I am after a great deal of thought. Do I know its possible to met a man from the net and fall in love. Yes I do I lived it. If it should happen trust me it wont be with someone from out of the USA like my X was(Europe)...he can be from any of the states here in USA.

Word of advise...Dont make your disability defined as you. Its a part of you its NOT all of you and it for sure doesnt control your heart, feelings or measures of love.

Allow the inner you to be known instead..sure ya can talk about your disability yet not as the main focus

I know for fact that all of you have a great deal of compassion in your hearts..there is just no getting around that. Its a awesome part of each of you. Seems the disability(s) tends to make that bloom even more. Some ppl need to be disabled I think so they can understand compassion and love.

How some of us know the value, the worth, of a human with all its glory even when "broken". Making us wanting to reach out to someone or hoping someone will reach to you looking past the "issues" and understanding. Allowing you to feel the love of another that you once experienced.

Thinking is it ever possible again.. I dunno if it is but I do know I wont let that get to me. I wont dwell in it..just keep moving forward..talking w/others...carrying on in life as we must.

I guess for me it began with accepting it ...which isnt easy. The broken part of me was the hardest. The being alone was ok..which does shock me knowing how much I love being in a relationship and the fact of I have never been without a man...until the past what..ummm..3 yrs

I know I have so much to give but do I have the strength at times to go through it all again..then I think Julie dont be silly if the right man comes along you know darn and well.. you will give it your all once again..wont be quiet the same in some aspects ..how could it be? Yet he will know my abundance of love for him and just how deep that goes.

We all know with age now come's health issue's for many many ppl...we are aging..breaking down here and there and to say it bluntly "Shit Happens".
I'm saying all that cause now for many at our ages we may fit in better cause others have medical problems. So then due to this...ppl who are disabled ..well it wont matter so much..cause at our ages comes more acceptance for one another for most ppl.

Maybe some of us will find that romantic love, that togetherness..all those good feelings ..how it makes us all feel..whole again and a place of belonging

I wish for you all to find that kind of love you seek and in that ..togetherness each of you help one another as it always has meant to be

*hugs to all*

Julie

Beings I'm "classified" as disabled myself, definitely won't have a problem dating and or marrying a woman with disabilities. Fact of the matter, my "ex" was disabled long before I met her. Didn't stop us from having a fifteen year relationship. Guess when we reach my age, things have a tendancy to "break down". Try going to WalMart and find an empty handicapped parking space! Count how many power chairs are running up and down the isles. Feel better about myself already!

Special note to Julie .... One of these days, gonna come out there and kidnap you.

Julie, that was absolutely beautiful. You spoke from your soul. You spoke, what I am sure many of us have thought.

Is this dating worth it? Why am I getting my hopes up? Just to have my heart broken all over again? Wouldn't it just be easier to stay single and never have a hope of finding a mate? What is this pull inside of me to have a significant other in my life?

Which leads to...

Is there something wrong with me that I can't fill that void inside of me as a single person? I have problems, no one will want me. Why try.

It would be easier to never have the hope in the first place.

Thank you for your suggestions foxy, but the thing is, I like to be honest up front, but everything on the table and people will either like me or not.

It's been hard....being disabled isn't hard, it is what it is!!! It's the lifestyle change.

I'm still struggling with my husband of 32 years leaving me because he didn't want to have to take care of a sick wife. I do NOT need care! Love, companionships, sometimes a little help, no we aren't doing the things we used to do, but I can't help that.

Life is all about changes. Everything changes. It's not a bad thing, it just is.

I think what really hurts the most is I found letters and he never really loved me at all. I was only 19, a kid. He was 24, and I thought he was so worldly.

So what I would like, more than anything, is to feel what it's like to be in love, and to be able to return it knowing that it is received freely and not as a burden.

I am disabled by no choice of my own, I'll be chubby so I can continue to breathe, I'll be all of the things that people are when they get older and everything that goes along with being disabled, but I will also be honest with myself and to others.

I've never really been on a date since prom of the 70s. Am I rambling? Oooo...that part, well, that's the Italian part, and I guess you can either keep up or smile and pretend that you are!

these sites really work, suzy... if you really work these sites. if you're not getting dates, it's not your disability or the "jerks" on the site.

best of luck to you, suzy!

i've heard moaning from disabled and non disabled women AND men, and offer the same observation to each one. let your light shine, dear. the reason that most people are not getting dates or friends is because they are not coming across to others as warm, nice, friendly, pleasant people.

julie,

I thank you for trying to help us feel better and sometimes reading your messages really do make me feel better!! However this one really doesnt. Let me explain why and hopefully this will come out right. I have been working on myself for about the last couple of months trying to get out more and really "find" myself again, and find someone for me.

I think instead of saying Dont let our disabilties define us we should learn to adjust ourselves around what we have left of ourselves. Like for myself, my disabilies are DDD and depression and nerve damage and weakness in legs and arms from DDD in spine. So I have learned to adjust my lifestyle around what I can do and not do. And maybe to some people that is wrong but for me I know what I can do and not do and its less stressful.

So I guess what I'm saying is for me its easier to get through the day knowing what I can do and not do and to not put added strain and added hurt and pain on myself. Yes my kids do alot for me and there are alot of things I dont do, but there are things I do get to do.I try to live my life to the best of my ability, but maybe not always to the fullest like some like other people. But I try to do the best that I can. Some days are better than others, some days I cant get out of pajamas, and some days I get out and run around all day, but tommorrow I'll pay for it.

I think it only fair for a guy to date a girl with disablites. Because it is right for a guy to go out with a girl with diabilities. They have the right to do that to. Everyone should deverve someone good in their life that would treat them with respect. Thats my opion on do men date woman with disablities.

I would. Considering I have a visual characteristic ... oh wait, am I supposed to call it a disability even though I have adapted? (Rhetorical question.) I went to a place where they sought to "change what it means to be blind" by turning the handicap into a characteristic ... it is all about being confident in yourself ... going outside the box ... and helping others around you so they can view your disability as natural as say, hair color. A woman wants a guy that is confident but not overly so; same goes for the reverse. So the end all answer from my point of view is: If the woman is in a state of constant need (because she thrives off the attention instead of actually requiring assistance), then no. If she is confident in who she is, not being defined by the characteristics that are a part of her but instead defined by her personality and attitude, then yes.

I use the ABC's of dating to decide rather than abled or disabled. My ABC's are: Affectionate Bright Compassionate Desire Educated Fun Gracious Huggable Intelligent Jovial Kind Loving Mature Nice Open Personable Quality Romantic Sensual Thoughtful Understanding Valued Warm X-rated (not really) Yearning Zany.

I don't discriminate in the women that I'd date, I'm an equal opportunity enjoyer and I enjoy her every opportunity I can.

Julie

Take the advice of FOXY_woman I date women I like, Not dating you,"SUSYQUE" had nothing to do with your disability. I did get tired of hearing on the telephone about all the same problems you posted hear over and over and over. Wearing your disability like a sheild might be the reason you are alone now.
I am disabled as well, and I have a hell of a sob story. But most people are busy with there own problems and its depressing to talk about them constantly. If you can't find a date maybe you should focus on you social skills.
Sorry but you said you wanted honesty

Just giving some thought after reading through the posts. Of course we date women with disabilities. But think about this. If you don't have a positive attitude or happen to be a whiner, how much fun would you be to spend time with?
I happen to enjoy riding my scoot and believe there wouldn't be a problem taking a gal with a disability riding if she was physically able. I like to go to rallies and such and would want to have her go also. If she can't ride? Well, then that's what cars are for and I would still want her to go. I think the biggest roadblock there can be is an attitude that gets in the way, not a disability. Hope you don't mis-interpret what I am trying to say. I just think attitude can be a bigger disability than something physical.JMHO, thanks

What he said....Fear is a huge factor for all of us,,,,,,All of us guys are supposed to have 6 pack abs and work for the Chippendales on weekends.....and all the women are 22 year old supermodels doing commercials on the side.....NOT.....
Just not the real world,,we all have faults

Hey Pole sweetie!

First a lot of great comments from all...

It seems that when I think I have 'found' him or at least dated someone that I thought could possibly work out, it doesnt. I tell them right up front that I have osteoarthritis in my spinal column along with osteoporosis and now scoliosis which sends pain throughout my body into my bones. I get around but soon, I have to stop, sit and rest a bit. My hip will give out and I need to sit.
I work every day, walk about a mile a day just at work and am sore as heck by the time I get home.. I am one who pushes on through the pain. I think some, not all, men have a fear of one day having to 'take care' of me. Well maybe that will happen, but I thought it was for better of worse, sickness and in health? Not that Im looking to remarry, but, if you say you love someone.. shouldnt that still be included?

**Back to Polefrog.. if you bring the six pack, I will help you drink it and I just adore the little fuzzy Chip and Dale chipmunks. Least thats my idea of a six pack and chip and dales

wanting a relationship! why is it hard for a man who has learning disabilities or any other kind of a disabilities get a date on any of these dating sites. a man can be turned down by a lady for having any disabilities. why is this? a woman dont want a man to turn her away because of any disabilities.

I think that that people have to get to know you some first. I have dated a few people off of here and things are good. we may not still be together but it is for other reasons and Not my disabilities. There is someone out there for everyone it just takes time to find the right one. i learned my lession on trying to settle too fast I am not doing that one again. I actually had one dude tell me that he felt all i wanted was someone to take care of me and my kids and that is most definatly not right. I usually will not say much about my problems to someone I am seeing untill I have been with them for a long while. I need to know that they do not think I am looking for someone to take care of me cause that it is not it. Take it slow and try not to really focasus on the problems. Hang in there you will find someone. THats what keeps me going. take care Leesa

when you least expect to find someone ,.that's the time they will come along. have seen so many of my friends with broken hearts due to rushing into a relationship for all the wrong reason( tired of being alone, dont think they can be happy unless they have a mate) sit back enjoy search, make friends, when time is right it will hit you in the face!!!

Hey Lonely...
Exactly the point I was trying to make in an earlier post on here. All of us have some disability and for many it is just thier attitude. Not physical, just a poor outlook for the future and their present condition.
If I met a gal who made me smile instead of bringing me down, I would be a great friend and perhaps more. Regardless of her physical limitations.
It's not just about the disability...

Hi,

I used to be on it awhile back with no luck
I would definetely date a woman with any Disability,
Only the Disabled know the strength we have.
I wish I could find that special woman out there I have to prove myself
often to prospective dates ( KINDA SAD )
I might be loosing my sight but I can see whats on the inside.

I do understand where all of you are coming from. I had a mild heart attack in 1994,and managed to do some light damage to my back in 2004. I am also diabetic, have high blood pressure, sleep apnea. I also walk with a cane. Because of all this I am on Social Security Disability.

I don't feel any different than I felt prior to 1994. As for not having a companion, well for me it has been almost 19 years. I'm still looking, and yes I do get discouraged at times, but I still look. Who knows, maybe some day I'll find someone that will take me for myself.

So hang in there.
