Awesome, ladies. I love conversing with ladies "in the field" (well ladies in general for that matter). I've found this forum, and some of its posters, very informative to augment my technical knowledge base and provide useful tips and techniques.

I don't know that I am a "geek" but I do know that I am the only female on my crew at work. I am a DR Tech (disconnect/reconnect) - I tear apart desktop systems, then after they are moved, I put them all back together (I hope). This week I will be tearing down servers and putting those back together. I first ran a computer in the 60's before everyone had their own. It was an IBM 360 Mod 20. I was chosen to run it because I was a microfilmist and worked so fast that all of the film came out blank and my boss couldn't understand why. He watched me one day and realized I was faster than the machine. I had to slooooooooooow down and redo it and then they had IBM train me and I have been into computers ever since. I had an Apple2E at home to start with. I was always the first, an early adopter before the phrase was used. First to get a pager, an answer machine, a cordless phone, then a cell phone, computer, scanner, digital camera - first in my family and the first of my friends. Now I wait - let everyone else get the newest thing and wait until all the bugs are out of them and the price drops!

Today I installed servers and switches on racks. Drives me crazy because there must be 20 different kinds of rails and shelves to put the servers on and you have to learn which ones to use for each install. It was crazy today - must have been about 100 of us running all over - people inches away from the next person - people on all four sides in the narrow aisles racking and stacking hundreds and hundreds of servers and other equipment. Cold aisles were freezing and blowing strong air - hot aisles were too warm - sweatshirt on, sweatshirt off..........LOUD too but oh so much fun! Maybe we will be doing all the cabling tomorrow - that is fun too cords and cables of all different colors hanging from the back of the rack and the front of the rack - then keeping them all numbered and in order.............WHEW!

Just lost the cooling system in my server room the other night, and got the call at 4:00 AM that systems were starting to shut down. I got onsite, and the temp in my server room was 97 degrees.

I got my engineering department involved. It turns out there was a bad breaker in the electrical box that tripped, which shut down the cooling system. At 97 degrees farenheit, my servers were running at about 140 degrees internally, and eventually they start shutting down. That was the most fun I've had since the Halon system in my AS/400 computer room went off years ago.

I know I'm late to the party, just the same that's pretty cool... I started out primarily interested in design, and did a lot of work on hardware/networking/sysadmin type things.. Kind of fell into programming. Wish I could afford to go back into doing artwork again. I think it's probably been 15+ years since I've even held a paint brush.

Well, you're in Layton... *kidding* ...honestly, most guy geeks do take care of themselves, it's probably more to do with your age group than anything else. The better/worse ones will weed themselves out a bit more as you get older. Though I think the culture there is geared towards pairing off, so a lot of the "good ones" are probably taken.

*geeking out* "Original" BASIC would have been before 7th grade for you.. just the same, it's all cool. I knew jack about computers until I hit about 19 myself... I liked doing art/design stuff, and it was kind of a natural (although primitive by todays standards) mix... Loved the ANSi art scene back then though, didn't really pick up until the early 90's though.

Actually, I'm working on game design as a career.

And I prefer Python to C++. Just... is less complicated.

Do you have plastic strips hanging down on the end of every other aisle to keep the warm air in? Worked in a new building yesterday in a brand new server room and they had installed these very classy clear thin doors that open and close automatically when you enter and exit the aisles. Very efficient.

Do your racks use cage clips? The new racks that were installed would not work with any of our rails or shelving and they don't use cage clips which is primarily how we rack and stack. SO WOOPS - a huge snafu that will have to be addressed over this weekend.

That does sound like fun solving the heating problem - adrenaline must have been pumping like crazy for all of you!
Have a great weekend!

Seashell~ No hanging plastic baffle strips in my server room. In that scenario I described in which my room got so hot, there was an inherent design flaw. I've got one Mitsubishi cooling system as my primary, and a backup Honeywell system as well. However, as far as the design flaw goes, both of the cooling systems were on the same circuit, so when the breaker went down, they obviously both went down. Engineering had it re-wired within a few hours. In the long run, it was actually a good exercide because, in the process of checking things out, I had another circuit that was overloaded, and the wiring was hot to the touch, which could have obviously been another problem in the making, so I had to do some load balancing with some of my servers. You have a nice holiday weekend, too.

Correct...

That was the first time I had trouble with that breaker in the cooling system. Once I got the system powered back up, the room cooled back down to 68 degrees in a couple of hours.

Cute pix of Wiley....
68 degrees - seems pleasant - our rooms are never pleasant - absolutely freezing in the cold aisles and stifling in the warm - I wonder what the overall temp is in that room - it is never comfortable for humans, I guess it is ideal for the servers. Saw the most amazing system Friday - Cisco - I have never seen one like it. I should have looked at the model etc. so I could ask you if your have seen one. It has a clear slide up cover and looks like a hi tech soda dispenser. It is sleek, silver and I would love to see what it looks like at night.
I am unexpectedly off today - I was scheduled to work and we all got an email last night that it was canceled and not to come in today. I guess they had a lot of people calling in to take the day off.
Now the weather is cloudy - wanted to go to the beach.
I wanted to tell you about some great footage in case you haven't seen it. Flooding in the server room in, gosh I have forgotten what country.....Turkey I think. Just go to YOU Tube and do a server room flooding search. Talk about a nightmare...........I would imagine it was a total loss - they were completely under water. It's a few years old so you have probably seen it.
Have a good one....SS

Hi Seashell. More server room horror stories, eh? I'll have to look that one up. Have you ever seen a halon tank go off? Crazy stuff. I had that happen in an AS/400 shop years ago (I may have mentioned that previously in a prior post - please bare with me ). Because of that server room temperature problem I was talking about last week, today I had the engineering guys install an outside temp guage in the hallway outside of my server room so that security can monitor it without actually going in the room. When it does get too hot, an alarm is sent to the observation room here on property (you know, where we casino operators keep the hundreds of surveillance monitors and equipment). Next time you go to the beach, let me know - I wanna go. being up here in the mountains now, I really miss the beach.

HOW EXCITING! Server rooms are fascinating as it is but to have one in a casino must really be fun. I had no idea that's where you were.
Temp gauge outside the room - great idea - viewable on a monitor - brilliant!
I go to the beach all the time - I live right near it on the coast as far west as you can go- on the edge.........of California.
So - do you gamble? I love to shoot craps.
I don't know how much you can say on here but what R those servers there doing? Anything to do with gambling or admin type things? Is a hotel involved?
I work right in Silicon Valley and commute 80 freakin' miles a day when I work.
Stateline was part of my life growing up and later on too but in the past 17 years or so I have been going to Reno more. Less hassle - calmer - not as much crazy traffic - easier to get around.
TTYL - have a good one. SS
PS I don't think you answered this.............do your racks use cage nuts/rails? Shelves? No, never saw an AS/400 problem like you described. I do remember the day I was running an IBM 360 at a credit bureau and someone ran a credit check on JOHN SMITH and all hell broke loose. Thousands and thousands and thousands of listings for JOHN SMITH - we were down for hours trying to clean up that mess of papers. It was all because of one key punched card. It was almost scary and yet very funny at the same time. Had to shut down the whole operation to get it to stop.

Hi Seashell. Do I gamble? No, not in the traditional sense of blackjack, craps, and slot machines. Way back when I was a punk kid (22) right after I moved to Tahoe, I went out partying on paycheck night and promptly gambled away my entire paycheck. I told myself i would never do that again - and I haven't to this day. When you are around gaming for as many years as I have been, you see the horror stories of people gambling, and the attraction just dissipates, at least in my case. I do, however, delve into some sports handicapping and line setting.

The servers I run host lots of varied and different applications: Micros point of sale system (restaurants, bars), payroll and H/R, Kronos timeclock/timekeeping, Daylight sales/catering, Softbrands hotel/property manangement, IGT slot machine system, and various systems that control and govern different servers which allow the IGT slot system to provide player tracking, comps, TITO (ticket in/ticket out), slot bank controllers (which is a collection point for all of my 600 slot machines via serial connections - yah, old technology), and a few other ancillary systems. I've got a few special machines that run the various reader boards throughout the property, one that controls all of the 38 plasma TV's in the race/sportsbook area, and a couple of others that run my promotion kiosks on the casino floor. The server racks are HP slide-out rails, and generally run about 60 "U's".

HI Wiley - My daughter and son-in-law welcomed twin baby boys on Monday night so between running back and forth to the hospital which is a good hour away - and trying to squeeze in some work = I have been way too busy and sooooo happy!
The babies are precious and perfect and my daughter is doing great. They came home today so I was busy cooking a lot of stuff for them so they could get some rest and have a few dinners and lunches ready to eat.
The babies have to eat every three hours and it seems as soon as we finish with them it is nearly time for the next feeding and diaper changes and burping etc.
Then a lot of company came so I was helping with that and cleaning up after all that and helping with the babies.................WHEW! Just got home! Sorry I haven't answered your prior email. It is fascinating what your servers do - I am so curious which casino .....any hints?????
I can give a hint about where I have been working this week - there is this thing called a "Generation ---". I am working at their flagship office tearing down desktops this week getting ready for them to be moved and reinstalled on Sunday. Working on a Sunday...rare...but since there has been a slowdown - I need to work whenever I can.
I know you probably can't discuss a lot of things - just like I can't because I have to sign confidentiality agreements - but I would love to be a fly in your server room.
Anyway - I should be on more regularly now ...
I can completely understand why gambling is not a good idea if you live near it - makes total sense. Good for you. It's like a lot of drinking isn't a good idea if you are a bartender.
CIAO! SS

I have a problem with the term "geek." A "geek" is a sideshow act in the old traveling circus days. The "geek" would bite the heads off live animals, usually chickens. I just don't want to be placed in that category. I much prefer the term nerd.

I think "geek" is considered cool and "nerd" is not. Geeks are intelligent and trendy and into the latest gadgets and technology. The word "nerd" connotates a person with their head stuck in a manual, always INDOORS - pale, never goes into the sunlight, rather boring. A nerd sticks to that one topic they are an expert in. Geeks, however, are lively and curious about everything and great conversationalists. I also find that geeks love to share their knowledge and lend their expertise to others who need problems solved. Nerds seem more into their own little worlds. The word "trendy" would most likely be banished by both types. It is a very annoying word.
This is just my opinion, but it did get me to join this board. If it had said "Where are all the female nerds", I would never have posted.
Bottom line..........................there is room in this world for both and they are both needed for different reasons.

I am a female geek from way back, and proud of it. I code, I d&d, I game, I even read books on physics just for the fun of it. But I doubt you would guess any of that by looking at me.

I want to be a female geek when I grow up....the alternative was to smash my computer because it doesn't listen... But realized it was a communication problem on my end so I am will to learn so I can have a more productive relationship with my PC instead of rebooting it all the time....lol are there any good online schools for IT?

I was a RPG/400 programmer for 12 years and a pc tech for 3 years. I can build a pc from the ground up. I would think I would qualify.....
