A healthy clean dog doesnt smell! My weim is inside and you'd never know that if you visited. Animals can take cold more so than they can heat. A dog becomes acclimated and considering you live in CA he wouldn't get "too cold" outside. Long hair, short hair, breed and a lot of other factors weigh in on that. However he wants and should be a part of your family and treated as such.

Hello, I have been to your town and had a Starbucks there! Interesting area. I keep my doggie outdoors in all but the
most extreme cold, which here is around freezing. He has a house and a bed, and I put on a sweater for him to
wear. You might look into the heated beds. I have used them for years for cats, and would buy for a dog if
he were senior or my area were colder. I have 3 of them for the cats to use. I also have the "self reflecting" heat
pads for all the pets, they do seem to like them all year. They are easy to wash and dry quickly. I also have
another "reflecting" pad on the bed which is somewhat like a foil. I bought it at the pet store. I find if I enclose
the sleeping space, make it nice and tight (use a cardboard box) then cover the box with a wool blanket, everyone
seems nice and warm. Let us know what you come up with!

Why get a dog if you're going to exile it to being alone and outside all the time??My dog loves to lounge on my elevated deck and survey HIS fenced in backyard when the weather is nice, but I still bring him in every couple hours and he sleeps in the house at night and he's in the house when I'm away.

Oh, I mean to say that Pepe SLEEPS at night outdoors. It is one part of my 50's farm upbringing that I cannot seem
to get over, especially in the mild climate where I live. He is in the house and on the porch and helping me
with the gardening all day. But at night, into his "house" he goes and sleeps like a champ. I realize that many, if
not most, folks disagree with having him sleep outdoors. But many breeders use kennels, so to me, it seems
that is the time we spend with our pets, rather than where we sleep, that matters. It would do no good if I were
at work all day and he were alone. I waited years for retirement before I got another dog, what with my long
work hours. I had a cat when I worked, but I walked home at lunch every day to say hi. How about the OP?

For all you folks asking why leave him outside, Why are you cooping them up inside?
It depends on where you live! For example, I live on a 165+ acre farm. They have room to run, room to play, room to be a dog! I understand in the city you cant just leave your dog loose so in a situation as that I can see keeping the dogs inside.

Dogs acclimate to their climate. Haven't you ever noticed a dog shedding more in the spring? That is thier winter coat shedding! My dogs stay out year round(they do get extra bedding and covers over them in the coldest weather). The main thing is let them acclimate don't bring them in the warm house at night then leave them in the cold all day! Its either or. Now don't get me wrong we had an extreme cold snap a few years ago where we got down below zero and our dogs got to stay in the garage(prolly got down in the 30's in there).

Back on topic if your coldest weather is 65 then you have nothing to worry about.

BUT ur animals have room to run ur not chaining them up all day or even in a little fenceed in area thats different, much different.

I agree and that is why i posted the way i did. I just felt like some of you,not all, but some of you were not taking into account that some of us have open spaces. Even a half-acre yard in my opinion is better than cooping them up in the house. Think about it this way, a dog's nature is to run and play(with the exception of a few breeds ie basset hound). If your yard is bigger than your house, doesn't it make sense that outside gives him more room? I'm not saying isolate him by any means but like Alice she lets them run around with her by day but at night the dog has the whole yard to run in not just one little room!
