i've been running vista since day one. i like the fact it's locked down so programs can't rewrite it when installing.

i do full install. never upgrade.

i would do 7 but i don't like ie8.

vista isn't bug ridden. but it does have some stupid designs that 7 did away with. the only problem i have is when msft throws one of there updates. it screws up my internet surfing and 4 weeks later i can't take it anymore. i keep updates off now.

vista is only bug ridden when you upgrade. as ALL windows have been that way. vista is more enhanced. has more features. system restore works better. and as i stated earlier.

VISTA IS LOCKED DOWN TO KEEP PROGRAMS FROM REWRITING WINDOWS REGISTRIES WHEN BEING INSTALLED.

xp don't have that feature. not to mention it's 9 years old and archaic now. and is much harder to make things happen between two computers.

i have one of them netbooks without cd rom. it comes with xp. and if i load xp on pc. i can't make a connection for NUTTN. vista will. i use my pc as the cd rom drive to load programs onto my netbook. i can also use vista as the rom drive when i need to wipeout the netbook. and i can do it all wirelessly.

i can go twice as long on vista over xp between hard drive formats.

i ran 7 before it was released. and i really like that one. graphics too. but i don't have the money yet and i DON'T like IE 8.

the starter edition is just that though. STARTER. home premium at least is what you want.

so, today i did my first official install of win7.

that first initial bootup didn't complete after 20 minutes of dark screen. that last step before it gets to the settings before bootup. hit the reset button and it booted up. let 7 do the downloads for all drivers. didn't like the video driver. everytime the pc was rebooted. it was just a desktop screen. no icons or start menu. so i got the actual software drivers for the nvidia geforce 6600 display adapter. everything kosher now.

i did find myself double clicking to make anything work though. wether it was opening a program or clicking on a websight link. and i'm not talking about the standard clicks. i'm talking about having to do it twice.

anyone else have that problem? this particular pc happened to be a hard core gamers machine at one time.

asus board. slow bios sequence. seperate vid card 128 memory. amd 2x 3.7ghz. very heavy duty cooling fans. the processor fan was 6 inches diamter itself. all seperate wires from the power supply. and wrapped in insulation. not your standard basic pc setup.

i had RC1 and 2 on my own pc. and that was better performance then this official release i just installed. seemed to be buggy. and the updates it had didn't help anything.

Ditto here. If I had to choose between Vista and XP, I would go for XP. Vista is so vulnerable, you do a bit of cleanup, next thing you know, one of the drivers is acting up. XP is more stable. And, I like Microsoft programs like Word, Excel, etc. 2003 rather than 2007. In 2007, everything is re-shuffled around, but pretty much the same features, you just find them in the odd places. It took me forever to figure out how to print. Why would they do it? Beats me.
I hope that Windows 7 is better. On it, you can work on 2 screens at the same time. Which means, I can listen to my music on YouTube and pay bills at the same time.

@snowwy66

I've had no driver problems, however, one word of caution. Never, ever, ever let Windows update the drivers. Always grab the latest from the manufacturer's website: motherboard, video card, everything. I've always had problems when using the drivers from Windows update.

I'd say there's a high chance some of your problems would disappear if you did some driver updates (maybe even a fresh Windows install again if you haven't done much customizing yet).

it's not my computer. kinda hard for manufacture drivers when you know nothing about the board. LOL. and the vid card was seperate from the board. i did find a peace of software though that i save on my phone so now i can find a description of the board. and did find the software for vid.

problem is though. none of the people know how to use a computer. so, to turn updates off. gets aggravating with the popups one gets BECAUSE updates are turned off. really nothing you can do but just let the updates do its thing. so, eventually msft own drivers get installed.

solutions are all fine and dandy for us people on this sight. but we're just a very small minority that actually know what we're doing. 99.99% of the world only knows how to do one thing. and that's turn pc on. and 99% of those people ACTUALLY USE the same switch to shut it off.

I hear ya. If you have access to the computer, open the case. The model of the motherboard should be displayed somewhere on it. There are also utilities that will get the information for you as well (for example, click START -> Run, type in msinfo32 and press enter. The mobo model will be displayed on the System Model line).

As for the windows updates, it gives the ability to hide updates that you do not want it to download. But that should be a moot point, as drivers are usually optional updates, which Windows Update doesn't automatically install.

Give that tool a shot mentioned above, and get the appropriate drivers for your board.

i have a peace of software now to indentify the board. i've saved the program on my phone. i use it as a flash drive with a 16 gig card inside. has all the updates for when i do a fresh install for someone. and other software.

don't know about 7 as i don't have it. but vista has this popup everytime the pc is booted up. i've tried turning that off. but another popup happens. it's like msft wants the damn thing turned on regardless of what the user wants. LOL.

i use the services.msc thing.

i hear what your saying though. but there's only so much you can do and i get tired of constant phone calls. so i just leave everything alone and let the pc owner have at it.

it got to the point where i finally told everyone to get off there damn a** and learn how to use the damn thing. instead of just sitting there logged into some stupid a** chat room. 13 years ago that was the big thing. buy a pc and visit a chat room. it was a worldwide epidemic if someone broke there pc and couldn't log into a chatroom.

Also, Linux is fun to play with.. specifically Ubuntu...

That's why you use Firefox with a couple of addons, like NoScript, Adblock Plus, etc... and with a decent antivirus app like AVG, you have nothing to worry about.

When it comes to owning a computer, one just needs to know how to take care of it - or know someone that will do such for them. MACs aren't as popular, so not MANY viruses out for them. But the solution to viruses is NOT to completely change the type of computer you use to a "less popular" one to avoid them, it's just learning and upkeep. I would never gimp myself by using a MAC, just because there are some viruses out there, ya know?

i don't tweak my vista. been using it as it came out from day one. i've been very happy with it. would never go back to xp. all my family runs vista too. and it's saved me a lot of headaches compared to what i had to deal with during xp days.

only thing stopping me from running 7. is ie8. i hate ie8. i like running the latest software. but not ie8. and not a big fan of having to install something else for a substitute. (firefox, for instance). although, i'll take that when it comes to ftp tranfers from my computer. as IE period just don't work. and my tranfers are in the range of upwards to 4 gigs.

I admit I probably haven't used your EXACT, specific configuration of Vista, but I'll let you know that I have tweaked all my OS', and have done just what you said to each of them since I am a gamer.

Win7 is very reliable and will become a lot more supported in everything as time goes on.

People aren't going to go out of their way to get a version of Vista where they have to wonder what services were stopped and what ones weren't, what's been yanked, etc... so back to the topic at hand, we are speaking of people that just want a solid OS that will do what they need and will be the standard for the future.. and that's Windows7.

It's quite fast and does everything one needs.

Firefox with NoScript, Adblock Plus and Xmarks is the way to go.
Firefox handles FTP just fine, too.
I don't know why you wouldn't want to use Firefox.. it blows away IE.
Just go Win7 and take the plunge to FF.. it's worth it.

Why?!
You're not "substituting"... by using the word "substitute", you're suggesting that IE is what we SHOULD ALL be using by default. Just because it shipped with Windows doesn't mean it's some sort of authority. Firefox can display all pages just fine.

and it also makes it hard to listen to people complaints about what dn't work when i'm running different things.

You can also get "IE Tab" plugin for Firefox.

Hi
I'm using openSuse since 1998 when I lost all my data on Windows 98. Nowadays I can run all my windows apps like Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc. on Linux with Wine but also some DX games like Tomb Raider Legend.
Mac is like a proprietary Linux to me so I don't need to buy it. I recompile my programs for Mac on a very basic Darwin. Same for Windows...as soon as I've FSX running on WINE it will be used only for recompiling my applications...
But hey do anything you can make money with. I only dislike the republican approach "after me the flood".

I am curious, do you have the really Old OSs (like Win 3.11, CPM) running on the Original HD/Disk/ hardware they came with? I still have my Win 3.11 Install software but have not tried to install then on newer HD

I love Windows 7. It is Microsoft's answer to their mistake named "Vista". I haven't used any version of IE since high school, which was 5 years ago, except of course to run windows update. I understand the Linux distros such as Ubuntu is more stable and less likely to get viruses. But since I like to game, it's not for me. WINE lets you play some windows games but is ultimately too slow for anything modern.
Anymore, Macs are overpriced internet boxes. I admit that for a while, Mac had superior photo editing and video editing software, but in this day and age there are just as many options if not more for Windows. Plus, you can't modify a mac because of its proprietary hardware. The most common reason people go with Mac these days is because of less viruses, but then I see people installing windows on their Mac. Make since? Not really. Plus, I'm not going to spend 3 times as much on a computer to avoid viruses, especially since I'm a gamer.

Mac + Games =

i'm starting to get tired of all the msft updates. i've had 7 for 45 days now. and any computer i freshly load up all seem to run circles around me. boot ups get longer and internet gets slower. i've had that same problem with vista and xp too. it's getting to the point now where i just turn updates off now. i mean, most people in this world don't really give a crap as long as they have something to use.

my old laptop with xp has really been running sluggish now. and it only does the internet now, which is once in a blue moon.

the tech savy people who are picky about there security probably cares. but the average home user knows absolutely nothing about a pc. they just want something that works.
