I'm curious what other people do to stay busy and keep the creative juices flowing. I'm just thinking that some of us might have a hobby that others might also enjoy.

I've done some woodworking in my little basement shop for several years. I also do a bit of computer programming. I'm in two online racing leagues, which I think are very fun. I bought an old Chevy S-10 last year and hope to have it back to original or as near as I want it to be by the end of 2011. The engine has a fresh rebuild and the tranny is recently updated. I'll start on the interior and body work when warmer weather gets here. I also remain active in the greyhound adoption circles, although not as much as I once was.

Teasing my daughter relentlessly......lol.......she loves it.

On serious note: I love renovating homes, researching to find a way to help another fellow disabled in my area.

I am so looking forward to starting my own personal raised garden/vegetable beds so I can eat healthier as well as saving my budget money.

I used to love cooking. I still do love it, but can't do it as often. Tonight I'm making spaghetti and meatballs. The trick was to make the meatballs early this morning (not cook them, just mix the meat and seasonings and form them) and cook them tonight. The sauce pretty much tends to itself other than adding ingredients and an occasional stir, aided by my roommate. So, it's not a lot of time on my feet after getting through the hard part of mixing and making the meatballs this morning.

I'm also learning jewelry making. Other than that, I write a LOT, talk to folks online (obviously) and play a lot of video games. I'm also studying Latin just for personal interest, not sure if you'd count that as a hobby.

I used to use the basement workshop more- woodworking, turnings, some leatherworking, a little jewelry work, some knifemaking. Once the docs started me on blood thinners that was pretty much the end of working with sharp objects. Now it's loaded with motorcycle parts for 3 or 4 bikes my son is working on.

Come spring [warm weather] when I can get to the mulberry tree that needs taking down, it's going to become 3 or 4 stick bows- Got the antler tips already prepped, and some deerskins for cases. Planning on at least one child size for the new grand daughter to grow into.

Other than that- I follow a bunch of online forums, read, write some, work on computers when I can. Cook when I can (no stamina for standing at the stove lately). Just stuff to get through the day and keep the Reaper at bay.

Photos in my profile show some of the woodturnings and woodwork. Haven’t done to much on turnings lately with loosing my sight maybe again someday. Can still see enough to get things cut and laid out for woodworking but gun shy on doing any turning.

I've thought about trying my hand at wood turning. At the moment my income is holding me back from an equipment purchase. I sold my planer last year when I was running short of cash and wish I had it back. Maybe one of these days I'll pop for another one.

I love to paint....pictures. Time disappears when I have a project on the go. Just wish I had a place I could set up and leave it up, and have good lighting. When I am concentrating on getting a certain feature just right, I'll think maybe an hour or so has gone by BUT when I look at the clock, three, four, maybe five hours have disappeared. OMG. Makes it hard to paint during the week when I work because I never get a good nights sleep and drag my a** the next day.

Wood turning is done on a lathe, number of different things can be made from solid pieces of wood - platters, bowls, spindles etc. I enjoy doing segmented turning such as this. This has 98 pieces using Pine and Walnut (just some scrap I had laying around) Each piece is first cut to size and degree, depending on the object you wish to create, I then glue each piece to form the ring, then glue the rings, after drying time it is placed on the lathe and “turned”. Hope this helps understand.

How cool is that !!!!!! With a plastic liner, you now have an ice bucket....or if you have four of them in different sizes, a cannister set for your flour, sugar, tea and coffee in the kitchen. Or without the lid, and a plastic liner, you have a planter. Or just as is, containers for the bathroom for the cotton balls, hair brushes, or whathaveyou. Lots of ideas for that handy dandy container.

That is some mighty fine lathe work. How long from start to finish would a project like that take to complete? How long do you allow for the glue to dry good and tight? There's a consignment shop here in my town and I bet you could make some decent bucks selling your stuff.

The cup? Hadn’t really totally timed stuff like that Gray, do some cutting in the winter or rainy days, put ‘em in a can for later; during nice days have too many house to built or remodel; like to let the glue set for 24, actual turning is ‘bout 20 - 30 minutes depending on type wood, design etc.

Hi Jistvisit.......I would like to do that but, I don't have the camera or the know how to do that. But thanks for being interested in what I do.

I do, do landscapes but I like to do portraits (not always of someone I know) but just a portrait of an interesting face with lots of character lines.....a face that tells a story of life and the hardships that life has had to endure.

I wish I could win the lottery so I could have a place to paint to my hearts desire.....I love to create beautiful things, and would also love to learn how to do woodturning. The pictures you posted, are just awesome....but I need time, money, tools.

You know, hon. If you would find a cheap portable camera *about 5.00* and take pictures of your most prized items.....go to good ol' Walmart *shudders, lol* and put it on the disc. Now, I haven't tried photobucket dot com but heard it's been difficult for some......but once you get onto photobucket you can transfer the picture onto this board. If unsure..........maybe someone can explain *step by step* how to do it? I would love more of our lovely friends to post their prized items as well.

What say you?

Oh, p.s..........awesome pics, Jstvisiting........Great thread, Grey......and, you all are just so peachy cute!

I've never tried wood turning. Most of my wood projects have been of the furniture type. I made a cradle for my niece's baby that turned out very nice. Toy boxes, cedar chests, a headboard for my neighbors bed and other such things. A couple years ago I made several cutting boards and chess boards. I bought the chess pieces online, then donated them to a charity auction.

Nice turning work, jist.... I never got into the segmented work- I like to let the wood speak for itself, and let the natural grain and shape of the wood tell me what to turn. I used a lot of spalted (dark mold lines) white birch, box elder, and whatever fruit woods I can find. Haven't turned anything since I started blood thinners, though. Turning has been described as attempting to stop a 200mph chunk of spinning wood with a razor. A little too dangerous in case of a bad cut.

Don't have any of the turning pics online, but here's a few other:

Possibles bag to go with the muzzleloader I made:
Photobucket

The rifle- over 200 coats of handrubbed beeswax finish on hickory. It's really a honey-gold color that's getting nice slighlty darker highlights where it's held.
Photobucket

Musketball pouch made from a turned bit of box elder and a [male] kangaroo's pouch. It will hold 2 kangaroo balls or about 35 .50cal lead balls.
Photobucket

And my other hobby- cooking. Ok- really food porn. Chicken parmigiana, garlic-cheese bread. Made with fresh mozzarella:

Oh my. You guys are great. I am not near this. I think I like woodworking but can't do much due to the lack of tools. The only woodworking tool that I have is a Stanley miter box that I used to attach molding to some shelves, which turned out to be a pain you know where. I wish I had a nice router to do without molding.
Other than that, I like fixing things, weekend projects, etc. My next weekend project is to re-caulk my bathtub, and the next one after this is to hang some adjustable shelving on the wall next to this computer.
Oh and I like taking long drives out to nowhere, with no particular destination in mind. Usually I take a freeway out east, to the country, last time it was about 40-some miles one way. I just love going places that I've never been to before, see country side, relax... while listening to the music in my language.
I like taking hot showers... very relaxing. Not sure this can count as a hobby.
And of course, typing away at this here computer. I just managed to install a printer without a CD.

I train my dogs. My white Aussie is deaf, taught him sign for sit, come, down, and shake hands. He's outside, and wanted him to know enough to be a gentleman. He's very gentle.
Daphne (blue Aussie) I built on her natural instincts, both to please and to know when an impending attack is near. So she is fully trained in obedience and 'help' commands. The Yorkie, not to be left out is my stubborn one (takes after her owner) LOL. However, I just snap my fingers and point, and she knows what I want and obeys that. (All dog training was done with love and respect for my animals).
I also write Christian poetry.
Like Utahgal, I am looking forward to planting my garden. I love flower gardening. This year I live where I can have my vegetable garden (my landlord plowed a place in my yard for me).
Also, this year, I purchased some baby chicks, so hopefully next Spring I'll have nice fresh brown eggs.
I also forgot to mention, as I haven't done it for a while, but I also paint ceramics.
