if the car is worth it to you, its much cheaper and quicker to just buy a used engine from a junkyard. usually only a few hundred and theres almost no downtime.

my $.02, the 3400 is a boat anchor. Since you give no details - assuming you're trying to keep a vehicle on the road and not trying to build a hotrod, just do what mierze said and find a junkyard motor on the cheap.

I'm assuming its one of the GM 60 degree v6s if so they are prone to popping head-gaskets if they overheat. find a junkyard engine with a warranty and change the water pump, thermostat and radiator out. as well as the coolant tube gasket (the one right next to the water pump tends to leak.

if you can keep them from ever overheating they are pretty decent engines.

don't let the cooling system go unserviced ever. Don't let it run low on coolant.

if they blow the headgaskets once. forget about fixing it. Its cheaper to buy another engine than to even try to fix the head gaskets on those things the right way.

ahh my specialty is GM 60*s I build them in my spare time...but anyways the 2.8,3.1,3.4,3.5,3.6,3.9 are all the same motor and are very reliable engines if taken care of. The only problem with the 2nd gen 3100/3400 is the intake manifold gaskets leaking and pouring all of the antifreeze into the crankcase. If its not taken care of then it will kill the main bearings and the motor is "shot" unless you rebuild it. Ive always used Felpro gaskets and the LIM gaskets never failed again. sooo yes i would just get a junkyard motor put in new gaskets and you will have a car that will go 200k+ if you maintain it.

Save up the 3K, and put it down on a NEW car. Even a bare bones decent entry level strippo can be had in the 15-20K range. Possibly even lower if you want to skip an auto transmission, find one that still has crank windows, and no a/c.

3.4s are f**king junk... mass produced, multiplatform motor with serious failure points... invest your 3k in something thats less of a waste of money... like beanie babies.

you can get a used engine and have it installed for a grand. but like carguy said they really are junk. if you can save 3 grand buy something else. and stay away from any GM car with a similar engine.

I would check to see if Jasper rebuilds these, I have had really good luck with their motors and they are cheap.

these engines arent that bad when regular maintenance is kept up. but damn, 3 grand...no thanks. and tech would do this as side work for about 1200, the price of the engine included.
