Looking for some feedback on these trucks. The boss is looking at buying one to tow our approx. 15,000# probe rig/trailer.
The truck he is looking at supposedly needs an injection pump and has the wrong pcm (truck is a manual trans and pcm is for an auto). Has 150K miles on it with kingpins replaced 30k mi. ago, new clutch 4k miles ago. They're only asking $1500 for it.
Was wondering if this truck will have adequate power for the mentioned load and if there are any 'red flag' reliability issues with these in general.

That is dirt cheap for a diesel with only 150k miles.

I would be very suspicious of that mileage, the problems you have list are indicative with a truck of many more miles than that.

We know the owners of said truck, it is a building restoration company and they have maint. records dating back to time of purchase. No reason to be suspicious of the mileage being actual. I imagine the truck was 'rode hard and put away wet' by the work crews. Company trucks tend to get used that way anyhow. Not afraid to put a few dollars into it providing it doesn't turn into a money pit.
I'll be going to take a look at it tomorrow afternoon...

We had a bunch of those in the fleet where i work. The early ones, like what you are looking at, are nothing but money pits. I am surprized that one made it that far.

Injection pumps go out, there is some kind of module in the intake valley that likes to die and cut out the fuel, the turbos start to leak oil and or have the bearings go out.

I have done quite a few glow plugs, along with pulling the exhaust manifolds and Y pipes to fix all the exhaust leaks.

After our last batch went to auction, the powers that be now only allow diesels in the medium and heavy duty truck lines. IE: International Harvsester 466, 530, and 570 engines.

Which is fine by me.

The 6.5's have the Pump Driver Module mounted right above the intake stock which cooks them. A replacement one can be had from ebay for around 60 bucks (just make sure its the same part number.) Then another 100 or so for a decent relocation kit. My 96 TD had its PMD relocated to the fender well but it still burnt up so we moved it to the bumper.

Get a clue Louie. Many companies sell old fleet vehicles on the cheap because they get to write off much of the expense anyways (it's called depreciation). I wont bore you with all the examples I know of people practically stealing vehicles - good reliable vehicles.
I don't expect anything - (one of) my job(s) is to make sure the boss doesn't waste money on a hunk of crap - since I am not familiar with the GM 6.5L I do my homework and ask many questions. Was reading threads over at dieselplace.com (among others) until my eyes started bleeding last night. Also talked to some diesel mech. friends and was not liking what I was finding out.
Long, ranting story aside, we will not be purchasing this truck unless the boss ignores my advice....

One of the biggest things one has to remember about buying used diesels is the maintenence history. Many diesel owners think their vehicles are tougher than their gasoline powered counterparts, and let the maintenence extend and or slip.

And that is the worst thing that can happen. Many owners got in over their heads. Especially the Ford owners. When they found out their vehicles held 16 + quarts of oil. Gets a little pricey when the time comes for an LOF, eh?

Along with the fact that most diesels now are $5-8K over and above the cost of a gas motor.

Most people feel they NEED a diesel, when in reality, they just WANT a diesel.

The 6.5 despite the obvious PMD issue was a pretty reliable engine. Even the US military used it for almost 20 years in the Humvee's and CUCV's. Head gasket issues stemmed more from wear and extreme stress. Ditto for block problems. Both of which can be avoided with routine maintenance. After all turbo motors (especially GM) require just that much more attention. Seals go bad. Bearings give out. Wastegates freeze up (which causes a overboost situation that can lead to the block damage).

Im not crazy about the mid nineties chevy diesels personally. not the greatest cooling which is hard on a diesel being as the temps can get extreme. the heads warp like most all early diesel trucks. it will have enough power to pull. but my guess is it will turn into a money pit. Easiest way to decide is how many early chevy diesels do you see on the road now? as compared to say cummins engines....

Take it to a GOOD diesel mechanic for a complete check up---and have that truck looked at front to back--top to bottom. make sure your mechanic knows how to check it for collision damages and chassis problems. It might pull the weight--BUT how safely will it do it?? The brakes have to be able to safely stop it---and surprise roadside p[olice inspections may get you towed away for unknown problems you didn't detect. 1500 might be a good price---and with some nominal repairs--you may get a good tow vehicle. Then again--you may be buying a problem that could cost you MORE than what its worth. Get it professionally checked!!---F I R S T!! Good luck--and happy holidays.
