I've been with girls that had their tongues pierced and for a number of years I did as well. To me it's neither here nor there...it "can" be fun for kissing and oral, but plain old experience/willingness with either is far better than just having a barbell in.
Honestly I think having my barbell in was more fun for my girl with oral than hers was with giving me head.
