On the other hand at Lowes I called the store manager before going there for a large purchase on a remodel job.He accepted my VFW membership! Im not a retiree or disabled and sure as hell not active. He said it was his call and he said it was something we earned!

jrbogie1949 Ventura, CA 68, joined Mar. 2009	the cashier showed me the new policy in writing. it showed that for veterans to receive the discount he/she must show a va id that has the words 'service connected' under the photo. i have a friend who has a service connected disability who showed me his card and sure nuff, those words are on his but as i am not affected by a service connected disability my va card alone will not get me a discount. the lady said the change was made several months ago and likely many cashiers did not get the word or continue to give the discount just cuz.

cupocheer Assumption, IL 68, joined May. 2010	It seems there is a lot of confusion about various military and veterans discounts, and the identification that will or will not qualify you for the discounts. I’m no expert on this subject, but I’ll tell you what I do know. First, there is no “veterans discount card.” There are a variety of different forms of ID, including a military identification card for active duty, National Guard, reserve, retiree and family members. If you are eligible for care from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), you will receive a Veteran Identification Card (VIC). A VIC may be noted to indicate that the eligibility is service connect, that the bearer has received a Purple Heart, or that the bearer is a former POW. There are also membership cards issued by various veteran’s groups, including the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Many people use their DD214 for identification. I’ve even discovered a few shady companies that are selling cards that are designed to look official, but are just the design of that company and a way for them to make a buck off of a veteran. None of these identifications automatically entitle you to any discounts or privileges. Each individual business determines its own criteria for offering a discount, and each individual business determines to whom it is going to offer a discount. Some generous companies offer discounts to all military and veterans, and other require that you fit into a certain category in order to receive a discount. It never hurts to ask, but remember – these companies do not have to offer a discount, and if everyone complains about it, they’ll probably stop! I’ll restate the policies again here for anyone who managed to miss all the previous debate. However, for the most part, the policies aren’t being properly interpreted by the individual stores so your results may vary. Both stores have basically the same policies, and offer two different, but related, discounts. The military discount is supposed to be for active duty military,current reservists, National Guard members, retirees, disabled veterans and their families. It gives a 10% discount to eligible patrons every day. The veterans’ discount is for any and all veterans. It gives a 10% discount to eligible patrons on selected patriotic holiday weekends such as Independence Day, Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day. A lot of confusion seems to come from the fact that these are two separate discount groups within the same general program. Also, many stores have generously been offering the military discount to people who are actually only eligible for the veterans’ discount. As a result, many customers don’t know which discount is which and there is a lot of misunderstanding. In the last few years, both Lowes and Home Depot have been asking their stores to be careful about only giving the discount to the properly eligible shoppers. Unfortunately, they’ve done a really poor job of training their store staff in the policy. Also, there are so many types of valid and invalid military and veterans’ identification that it is a huge job to keep all the store staff up-to-date on the variations. The result is that many ineligible patrons are still getting discounts, and many eligible customers are being denied a discount. It isn’t a great situation but it is what it is. Throw in some frustrated or confused store staff and lots of people are unhappy. Please, please, please remember that these discounts are a courtesy being extended by these stores. They are certainly not a right, nor are they guaranteed. I understand it is frustrating if you truly meet the criteria but are denied a discount, or if you’ve been getting a discount for years and are now told that you are not eligible. However, making a huge scene is not going to improve this situation. With as much bad publicity has come from offering these voluntary discounts, I’m quite surprised that the stores continue to offer the discounts. If you are sure you understand the offered discount, and you are eligible, and you are denied, please make sure that your complaint is polite and appropriate. If you don’t understand the discount, or you aren’t actually eligible, please don’t make a huge scene. It makes us all look bad and it makes it harder for the stores to want to help veterans and military folks. I'll try to help as best I understand this conversation. Ms Cupocheer is saying you are right! For example, if you offer a VA medical card as proof of your veterans status, and it doesn't say that you are a veteran with a service connected disability on it, then you would only receive a 10% discount on certain patriotic holidays, not during the rest of the year. So, you could do your shopping on those holidays and get the 10% discount you want. However, like Ms Cupocheer says... a 10% discount in offered to all active duty, active reserves, retirees, and veterans with service connected disabilities year around. Hope this helps... If you are, personally, confused as to why you used to get at discount at Home Depot and don't any longer, then re-read the posts concerning the policy changes of Home Depot in 2010, and Lowe's follow-on policy notice from January 2012. Those announcements are quite clear, and concise, in their statement. You can still get a discount at Home Depot and Lowe's by presenting your military ID, but only on those dates which have been allotted to your particular military ID status. That has not changed since 2010. You state that you used to get a discount at Home Depot but don't any longer. I accept that you know what you do/have done, and no longer do/can do, in regards to the military ID discount. Were you an associate of Home Depot and received a store discount as an employee I can see where you would no longer get a discount; but, that has nothing to do with a military ID discount. If you were (what Urban Dictionary refers to as a Home Depot(er)) ~~ then again, I see where you no longer get a discount for 'social behavior' [aka store "wh*re"] at a public business site. That has no connection to whether one receives a military ID discount. If you were a "work for food" Home Depot(er) [aka panhandler] I can see where you would no longer get a "discount" if the business had had you removed lawfully from the premises by legal restraining order from "soliciting" on their premises. That, also, has nothing to do with a discount for a valid military ID discount. If you were an acknowledged (or suspected) "predator" who stalked the parking lots of Home Depot in hopes of finding a 'victim to prey upon' but have been forced to vacate your occupational environment by law enforcement, then that has nothing to do with a military ID discount. You state that your card does not state 'Service Related', and further state that you are not service related disabled, therefore it is quite easy to make the leap and state your lack of not getting a discount at Home Depot concerns one, or more, of the alternate depictions recounted in this post and may account for you not longer getting a Home Depot discount; with, or without, any form of military ID discount card.
