Marijuana has negative effects if you let it.. I'm not a scientist but I have done a decent amount of research on the subject and from what I understand THC does not kill your brain cells it attaches to them and over time covers the receptors which stunts the electrical transfers that make up our thought. If you exercise your brain cells by challenging yourself intellectually on a regular basis then the THC coating will dissipate. Read a book or do math problems or cross word puzzles or trivia games.. you get the idea.. my point is that marijuana is probably the healthiest thing I do. my job stresses me out. fast food is horrible. cigarettes... yeah. I even run and that is bad for my joints (as in where my bones meet) but marijuana only helps.. well it does make me late for work sometimes but that is.my own fault. it helps my anxiety and my ocd which allows me to eat and sleep and actually keep a clearer head on a regular basis. My brain slows down just a little bit when I'm high which makes problem solving significantly easier as well.. legal or not I smoke as often as I can and I am quite sure I will continue to do so.. it would be nice to not have to worry when I walk around the block smoking a joint though

It works great as a medical tool but does have its down falls. It is a easy drug to start which is for a lot of our youth as a gateway drug to other drugs. And for those wjo say it makes great drives go read and learn it alters your state of mind. By that i mean it slowys down your preception and reaction time. In point if your traveling 60 mph on a road and the car in front of you hits the brakes you will need......... get the picture you wont react in time. Yes ive smoked pot and thought it was cool. Yes ive seen how it affects. People. I think it can be legalized with the proper restrictions. Because come on who wants their doctors to stoned for your brain surgery

Marijuana is not a gateway drug. At least no more than alcohol or tobacco. The reason people move to harder drugs has very little to do with the drug itself. Any addict has an addiction because of a psychological problem. And the same goes for a person who needs harder drugs to presumably feel numb.

As far as driving is concerned, I don't think anyone should drive while impaired. Although most studies show that the biggest alteration in driving behavior is driving slower, I still wouldn't recommend it. But I think we should just punish drivers for driving badly. Regardless of what drugs they are on, or how tired they are, or what they have in their hand, if they are driving irresponsibly, pull them over.

And why would doctors be high? Alcohol is legal but I'm pretty sure a doctor isn't allowed to drink on the job. Why would marijuana be treated any different?

Marijuana is perfectly healthy. There really aren't any negative long term effects. It should have never been made illegal in the first place.

I say legalize it. It's crazy that something that has been proven to help people would be illegal. There is an 11 year old autistic boy in Oregon that would beat himself till he was black and blue and blood was pouring down his face. His doctor approved him for medical marijuana and within an hour to an hour and a half after administering it he was calm, playing with toys and using his hands something that at the time was almost unheard of. I have an autistic son. Luckily he's not that bad but if he was I wouldn't give a fu*ck what the government or doctors said I would try whatever I thought might help him.

"no-brainer"...that's funny! Well, I'm going to buck the system here and say I see no reason to legalize it. It may have medicinal uses but morphine isn't available for sale either. I out grew the need for weed years ago. they don't call it dope for nothing.

Yea legalize it.
There are so many benefits such as it would create jobs, less criminals in jail (saves tax dollars), and the government can tax it (more revenue).

I have a theory though i think it would create an unintentional consequence. Since marijuana is the main revenue for criminal organizations cartel, gangs, mob, etc.
They would have to resort to other methods to make up for their loss in profits.

Would it result in more violent crimes? Or would they manufacture a harder/addictive drug?

Who knows

Anyone who has smoked weed and drank alcohol or even been around both cannot say weed is worse than alcohol. It is a documented fact. Weed does not lead to violence. Alcohol does. Weed is not physically addictive. Alcohol is. I personally have never smoked weed and decided it was a good idea to drive 100mph on the wrong side of the road. When drunk...I have.

The only reason weed may be considered a "gateway drug" is because it is illegal and you have to buy it from a drug dealer.

Furthermore...If pot was leagal it would totally cripple the Mexican drug cartel's and could provide vast revenues for the government through the same taxes applied to alcohol and tobacco. Tobacco by the way is also extremely addictive and harmful to your health. Weed can be ingested without all of the carbonmonoxide and tar.

I truly believe that the drug cartels pay the US government to keep pot illegal. Why else would our government ignore the facts that are sooo obvious.

Quote from cloven:
Legalize, decriminalize, "harm-reduction" is the way to go-however it gets done I wish they (each state's government, and the feds too) would hurry up and pass reforms.

Stop prosecuting people for doing something comparable to having an alcoholic drink or a drag of a tobacco cigarette (both of which are legal and not exactly fabulous for one's health, yet we're allowed to indulge in these substance habits to regulate mood & deal with stress). Self-administered moderate doses of caffeine are deemed acceptable as well (people can be trusted with having access to it) Why not make that so w/marijuana ?
People get prescribed all manner of pharmaceuticals & society is okay with that, but if a remedy is something you can grow by yourself and not have to pay the drug companies boku bucks for, then that's a threat to the economy & civilization ? Oh please.

Most (not all, but an awful lot) of the problems with pot are solely due to it being illegal, those consequences are *not* inherent to the plant/active ingredients.

Obviously yes.

Think of the billions saved on policing something we all socially accept.

Think of the tax revenue on a multi-billion dollar industry.
It would be billions, on top of the savings already.

What could we do with that money? Lots. Like have free dental care again, etc.

Think about how much harder it will be for children to get, if they need ID to buy it from the store,
not just the sketch guy down the road.

Think about the countless innocent people who get their lives ruined by the legal system,
for a drug that doesn't ruin their lives.
Most tokers are employed taxpayers.

Think long and hard about it, and ask yourself who benefits from it's illegal status.

And then remember that our governments would rather support law enforcement than us.
Mainly because, when the shit hits the fan (it will) the cops are the only ones who will stand up for them.
(since they pay them)

And also remember that somewhere along the line,
someone is getting paid to keep it this way,
and I'll give you a hint, it's not us.

We need to contact all of our local and national politicians,
and let them know we won't pay for something we don't want any longer...
