okay so i've been atheist since probably 18 or so. i've never even given a second thought to celebrating christmas. but the other day in my constitution class we were talking about freedom of religion and my teacher was talking about how atheists don't believe in christmas trees and stuff like that. but even though i'm atheist i like christmas trees and santa and sing some christmas songs. does that mean i can't be a true atheist? because i don't believe in "god" at all.

Well, the first thing you might want to remind that teacher of, is
that the Christmas tree is actually a pagan tradition and has
nothing to do with Christ.
Along with several other traditions such as the Yule tide fire (log).

Xmas is a pagan holiday; it was stolen by Christianity to "bring in" all those who were not Christians. Tell this to your teacher as well.

she was just talking about how you can't display nativity scenes outside your house and i guess as long as you put out a santa too or something like that then legally you can. apparently i didn't listen too well because i don't really remember what she said lol. i just could have sworn she said that atheists were against christmas trees and stuff like that. but i guess i never really gave christmas trees a second thought. i mean obviously i don't think that it's jesus's birthday (or that he even exists) but i like the christmas holiday.

is that wrong? i guess it's just a holiday i always celebrated with my family and i'm not gonna give that up just because i'm atheist now.

Christmass has nothing to do with jesus. In medivil europe tha welthy slauterd thair weakes animals in the middle of winter so thair would be enough for the rest of the animals to survive winter.
All were welcome to eat king and slave alike.
Thats why its the season of giving .

There are 3 original Santa like guys in old folklore. The modern santa aka American Santa is a combination of all 3. The Christian version/relation is a result of people not totally giving up on their culture, incorporating local and semi local culture... I call it Yule the entire December lol I may be wrong but I have a good festive time with a tree to rival Jezebel. Oh answer is Yes.

You answered your own question already...you are an atheist and you celebrate christmas, therefore your teacher is wrong.

It's just another holiday taken from a pagan ritual, but what most people do not appear to know is that the holiday theme we see today was started in Victorian England.

Yes you can. I love Christmas. I think xmas is more than just a Christian holy day. Many experts believe he was born around aug, sep. I think it's about helping others and that's what I think the whole idea is about. I'm too poor really to help much but when I can I do and I feel great about it. I don't think it's all about jebus as much as it is about helping and showing that you care about others.

One of the best things about atheism is you can celebrate anything at any time, in any way for any reason. Because there's no god to take offense at your dancing or what food you eat or what time you eat it.

Being self aware rocks. I'm gonna have a party.

I'd say most atheists in america were raised christian... so, I guess there is still a sentimental side to the trees, lights, carols...etc. I was raised Catholic, I always dread christmas time.

Anyone can celebrate Xmas and for any reason, no one religion has a copyright on this holiday.

Christmas is a time to share with family and friends and get as humanly drunk as possible for a few days.

we celebrate christmas in my house. to me, christmas is about the spirit of giving and family. those are traits i want in my children, so i try and cultivate them.

being an atheist means that i don't believe...but it doesn't have to mean that i'm against every single thing the church has to say. i use my reason to pick and choose what's important to our family.

it feels good to decorate, eat an asston of food, and see smiles on the faces of those that we love.

Technically Christmas is a pagan holiday like Easter. The bunny and eggs has nothing to do with Christs resurection What i hate is all the "Jesus loves you" emails that people send me. makes me want to eat a bullet.

I am not religious but I was once a religious nut and embarrassed about that aspect of my past. I slowly realized that was so cultish now i am non religious

Considering the fact that Yule/Christmas really isn't christian, there's nothing wrong with celebrating it if you're not religious. I couldn't get through all the holiday specials and religious pomp if I didn't have the trees and decorations to keep me occupied.

Forgive me if I come off as sounding rude, but your teacher is an idiot. The celebration known as Christmas or to many "Christ's mass", is a heretical defamation of pagan holidays. It is a crude combination of Norse and Roman pagan holidays. The idea of bringing a tree in the house to decorate, as well as decking the halls with boughs of holly, actually came from the Roman holiday Saturnalia. The worshipers of the sun-god Mithra, would decorate "christmas" trees long before the catholic church agreed to acknowledge the holiday due to the debauchery that the original pagan holidays entertained. So in saying all that, enjoy the winter solstice however you feel, as there are no legal restrictions, no necessity for any specific decor, it is your holiday to worship as you see fit.

I really don't celebrate xmas anymore. But when I did it was just a family gathering and not a religious thing. But most Christians/Catholics celebrate "santa claus" and not Jesus anyway. The more dedicated ones go to mass, I guess.

Nothing about Christmas is Christian, hell if you read the black book of lies (the bible) Christ wasn't even born in the winter.

Anyway, celebrate what you want, or do like we used to do when my wife was alive. We didn't celebrate any holidays, but everytime one of our birthdays rolled around we exchanged gifts like it was Christmas. There was a couple of years my late wife had 3 or 4 birthdays.
