I still have Monkees vinyl 33 and a 45 too.
I was only 13 or 14 when I saw them and honestly can't remember who opened. Being a long time music groupie I would like to think that I would have remembered it was Hendrix. Even though the Monkees were big Hendrix fans he quit early because of not being well received by the Monkee's fans. That would have been a very mis-matched combination.
I was at a artist forum at Fender guitar a few years ago when Ernie Isley was discussing his career and also performing. He talked about the early days of the Isley Brothers and Hendrix. Very interesting personal stories.

Ok, Ok, in hopes of generating some response....I'll tell my story. I think i already did on another thread, but......It was a dark, and stormy night......oh wait....that's not it.
oh yea....it was Feb. 1972, I was 12 years old,(I looked 14) It was @ Municipal Auditorium, Austin TX (my hometown) The AWHQ was not to open till the next year, so this is where the big shows were held. The line up was Nazareth, Black Sabbath, and Mountain. In that order. My cousin, Vivian, from Boston Ma. knew a guy on Mountains road crew....they were "friends"
(luv u Viv) so we got in on a pass.... It was a cathartic experience for me. I'm still "addicted" to metal, smart metal. Leslie West, (Mountain) was a freakin' guitar monster.
Literally, and figuratively. The whole event changed my life....much to the chagrin of my parents...

Leslie West is still a guitar monster. Just saw Mountain perform in January. I was doing a photo shoot for Mountain's opening band and was backstage after the concert. Finally got to meet Corkey Laing after missing him at NAMM Show a few weeks before. I had wanted to see Mountain forever and finally did.

I think the first concert might have been to see The Who at Shea Stadium when I was 15. It was an amazing show! Watching and hearing Pete Townsend was just mind blowing.
The next show I saw was David Bowie at Madison Square Garden. Before that show I was a big fan of Bowie. I hated the concert and after seeing it I just wasn't that into him any more.

Oh forgot, first concert was the Rolling Stones in Philadelphia it was a good show as much as I can remember it was a very long time ago and I helping my brother drink a gallon of white wine I think I was 16 yrs old, we had to put the wine into plastic milk jugs to get into the stadium. Don't think they let anyone do that any more.

When I was starting high school and most girls were sneaking out to meet boys, I was sneaking out to go to concerts.....with boys of course because someone had to drive. All they had to do was wave concert tickets in front of my face and I'd follow them anywhere, well almost anywhere.
I remember at age 15 sneaking out to see BB King, Big Mama Thornton, and Lee Michaels. Wow was that ever great!!!!
Funny how I grew up to be a professional photographer specializing in live stage performances and am usually back stage with the artists. But still you can wave concert tickets in front of me I'll follow. Forever a groupie!

The first concert I ever saw was KISS in 1978. ALIVE 2 tour. OH MAN - I was BLOWN AWAY!
I've seen a LOT of concerts since then, and many have been at least nearly as good (Cinderella opening for JUDAS PRIEST being one good example) but I have never seen a concert i thought was better!
It's cool to see there are still some Cinderella fans out there! I saw them about 5 times, too - GREAT show every time - opening or headlining!

DAMN BHOLLOW! I'm freakin' jealous! Hubbard, Byrd, Kirk....was that Zappa show anything like the "Mothers, live at the Filmore East" show, live album from 71'?? I wore out the grooves on my vinyl many years ago, but did find it on CD, awhile back. I was fortunate enough to be living in Austin, during the "Armadillo World Headquarters" years.Saw Frank twice there, got to even shake his hand.

Thanks for your reply's folks, I love talking about this sh-t. CG, I read in "Guitar world", Dweezil is doing another tour, hope to catch it. magicman, A lot of those old BBC concerts are being released by a company called "Rykodisc", look for it. Bhollow.....man,your killin' me.....you must have seen some great shit. Mark Volman, and Howard Kaylan, were the "Turtle" dudes. If you don't have "the Mothers" live @ Filmore east-1971, "Rykodisc-rcd 10167" get it. It's part skit, part play, all music. In between laughing your a** off, it's a "tour de force" of musical genius. Thanks again guys.......

Phoenix Symphony, they played Debussy's "Prelud to an afternoon of the Faun".
It was a special performance at the music hall, it was very exciting! I have loved that piece since I was a kid, and to see it preformed live was fantastic!
In '74 saw the Texas Playboys (Bob Will's group) live at Six Flags over Texas.
In '79 I was covering Bass for Bill Mophet's group, and got to play on stage with John Denver.
in '82 Auditioned for Bill Grant's Bluegrass Band, live at the Hugo Bluegrass festival.

I'm not proud of this, but I gotta be truthful. It's gonna make me seem older than real old dirt but the first concert I saw was Gene Autry, The Singing Cowboy.
It was at the gym in a part of Columbus GA called Bibb City due to the Bibb Cotton Mill where my mom and grandparents worked while my dad was off TCB due to military commitments.
I was about 5 years old. How did it make me feel? Like I wanted to be a singing cowboy, too.
Never got to be a cowboy, but I'm a musician. Life is good.

Must have been mid-80s. He was wearing a David Byrne type of white, over-sized suit. I was a Bowie fanatic until I saw that show at Madison Square Garden. I was just so disappointed. He put on a really crumby show.
I will never forget seeing/hearing Larry Coryell, though at the Village Vanguard.

When I was Five I saw Elvis at the richmond coliseum. It is odd the differnce in concerts today compared to then. At the Elvis concert there were a hand full of people at the stage wanting to catch towels from Elvis with Elvis sweat on them, everyone else sat nicely in their seats and watched the show. No mosh pit no stage diving , just an eve with Elvis.

My first concert was in Ft. Worth at the Will Rogers Collosium. I saw Styx come onstage and start to play and was completely enthralled. They were basically a no name band at the time and the crowd was pretty indifferent to them. Then the band I was there to see took the stage, as the crowd roared and earsplitting booms thundered through the place, the greatest band ever took the stage. The band was Kiss, it was 1977 and they were doing the Distroyer Tour. For more than two hours they kept the crowd on their feet and standing on the chairs cheering and singing to the music. There was firey explosions and loud defening booms, blood and sweat slinging from the stage out over the crowd. I was all of fifteen years old and had no idea what to expect. I have been a huge Kiss fan since and have seen them nine times.
What a thrill to see a show like that for a first concert. But no concert I have seen to date has been even remotely close to that amazing.

God... First concert I went to by myself (well, with a friend rather...) was in... 04' I think? It was mars volta and metal acid drop (or something like that) opening up for System of a Down. SOAD was absolutely incredible. It was the hypnotize/mezmerize tour I think, because they opened up with BYOB. Maybe not though... Anyways, for a while they were my favorite band. I think I got high just from all the shit in the air, though. It was crazy to say the least.
