Moved here from PA where I spent lots of time hiking but our mountains equal Alaska's hills. Need places, preferrably within half hour drive that are an easy climb with minimal bears, lol.

Here is a site for Anchorage Parks and Trails, complete with photos of the area. http://alaska.org/anchorage/parks-and-trails.jsp

and here is one without photos http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/chugach/trails.htm

this area is a bear nursery from what i understand from research i did a few years ago. i dont think hiking alone would be a good idea, and personally i would use my common sense in ways to protect myself.

ive heard that bears were such a problem from that area that they even wandered into the middle of the town.

Thanks for the websites.
I have done plenty of research but I was hoping to get first hand experiences from people who have hiked up here. I have seen moose when I have been out walking around the paths here in town on past visits but thankfully no bear yet. My brother isn't a hiker, so he wasn't sure where would be a good place to start. Actually, growing up in the country back home I can handle a gun very well. Since arriving here we've been out to the local indoor range so I can get somepractice with a handgun. Bought a .44 tonite, need to get different grips and practice with it before hiking season. I just hope I never need to use it, I hate the thought of having to ever use it to kill an animal. Since I am an animal lover BUT if it comes down to a bear or me and my dogs, I'll have to do it then.

Thanks for the in put. I am patiently waiting to get out hiking in the spring (hopefully start before the bears come out of hibernation. I know where Potters Marsh is and I know where Palmer is. Not familiar with the butte, is that the area where the dragstrip off the Old Glen Highway? Independence Mine is the one up by Hatcher's Pass, right?

I did the butte last summer, its not long but a little step in areas. Nice hike, you can see it on the right as you drive towards Palmer. Dont remember exactly how to get there as I followed a buddy.

I had ask my brother about Thunderbird Falls and he said he didn't think it was worth the hike in. Think maybe I'll go anyway since you are now the third person to recommend it to me. Thanks

I will talk to the people I am house/pet sitting for. I've heard them talk about the "Butte" in the office so I'll have to ask for a few more details. Thank you
