Why would you need to have the knee cap removed? Sounds pretty traumatic.

My knee cap was bone on bone with my knee joint it's self. So when I would walk squat down it would rub together and it would swell up my hole lower leg from my knee down to my foot. It would be like up to 3x's my other leg. If ANYONE has any questions just email my page and I'll relpy to you.

Well I know some older people, twice your age, who had knee replacements. They were active hikers before and all returned back to hiking after the operation.
However, one guy came back too soon and he walks with a limp.....actually a very noticeable limp. He didn't listen to the doctor to take it easy and do the PT. Other people seem to be doing fine.....you would never know they had the knee replacement.

You won't be able to run, but if you take it easy and do what they say, a full recovery is highly probable. The time it takes to get back to normal walking varies.......from 4-6 months to over a year. And even then you must take it easy in the beginning.

@ OP~~

Three of the most common reasons for kneecap replacement surgery are:
- a fractured or shattered kneecap
- a kneecap that consistently dislocates and causes pain/discomfort
- arthritis of the kneecap, which is both painful and debilitating

Surgery is relatively a simple process. Removal of damaged kneecap and insertion of replacement prosthetic.

May begin walking within several days of surgery with cane, crutches, walker.

May take several weeks before strong enough to walk without any support devices.

Must have therapy -- often for many months -- in order to rebuild muscle in the knee.

All surgeries show remarkable success rates, with the exception of those whom suffer from arthritis in the knee.

My great-aunt, when 72 years old, had an accident while riding her motorcycle. She had to undergo total knee joint replacement surgery. She was completly healed and recovered within 18 months. She couldn't wait to have her other knee replaced! She died when she was 89 years old, but her knees never gave her any problems following the surgeries. true story
