Two things are needed to become a religious person....
1) exposure to religion... you are a Christian because you are surrounded by it, if you lived in a Hindu community you would gravitate toward.. I think you get my drift
2) a personal need and weakness.... religious people are less responsible for their actions and consequences, they lean on religion to help them deal with life, and use it as an excuse for their actions (religion is imaginary, a delusion, therefore actually a type of psychosis)
We haven't even discussed the ultimate delusion.... prayer
Think about it, by praying, you will cause the forward motion of the universe to change, you will alter space-time relationships... what a naive and selfish concept... prayer

1. the ability to deny the truth when overwhelming evidence is presented too you

fear, not love
Guilt.
Oddly, these are weak motivators, they only last a season.

I don't think everyone who is religious is weak minded. It just gives people comfort. I have many friends that go to church and believe. I don't feel they are weak minded at all. And prayer that's a comfort too. My husband used to tell me "its mind over matter", and i'd say fuey. But now I am starting to agree. If really believe your headache will stop if u do that one thing, shoot it just might work. And sure as sh!t the next time you have a headache you do that same thing and it works (not with meds).
So prayer is the same thing. Its makes people feel better, it gives them confidence to fight another day, it promotes frienships, and so on.
I have a problem when atheist have a problem with what religious people do. Gee whiz, who cares. Live your life. Yes it bothers me when I get hassled for not believing, but I get over it quick and more on.
<------- atheist since age 9.

I hate to say it, but I have to weigh in on the side of prayer. Just not for the reasons the religious think. The relatively new science of noetics is proving that prayer, chanting, meditation, etc. does appear to have some power. Not because of any invisible friend out there, but because we humans appear to have untapped power within us. Prayer and such is simply the act of focusing that power. Some are better than others and groups concentrating on the same goal will have better success than an individual. Studies have shown that groups of people concentrating together SEEM to be able to affect the way various physical phenomenon react (such as ice crystals forming) depending on what the group was thinking. Just my two cents.
