I remember hearing about one lady that had a business but instead of paying herself a paycheck, she would charge her own business rent so she would not have to pay income tax. If this is indeed legal, it is smart.

It is my understanding that a company charges for service, they don’t have to have sales tax and collecting rent you don’t have to pay income tax. After all, form what I hear the government charges you taxes on all the money you collected from sell of goods, including sales tax, as earn income and then they collect the sales tax that you collected from the sell of the items.
Personally I think business should unite in getting the tax system simplified. I like the 999 tax plan. 9% sells, 9% income & 9% capital gains and it should be written that congress can not pick and choose what to raise taxes on but that everything has to be the same percent. That way they can’t sneak taxes in without everyone knowing about it.

It would not matter if she charged her business rent. She would have to pay taxes on the rent she collected. The business would get a write off but they don't cancel each other out. Income is income.

From what I understand, money collected on rent is treated different from a paycheck. I will ask a guy I know that rents out houses. I have heard you can take rent off on taxes, it may be a way to keep from paying so much to the government.

It is social security tax you don’t have to pay on collecting rental money.
