I don't do it personally. My dad being Mormon has and does his. Family records go back to the 1300s at this point of what he has found. The Mormon genealogy site is a great place to look for info on anyone's family history. Biggest genealogy data base in the world.

I'm more or less just getting started with it. I've found some great stuff. I like using Ancestry.com for its easy to use family tree. I just get frustrated doing research online. Everytime I want to find something out, they say they have the info, but its gonna cost. I'm planning to make a few visits to the Virginia Library. Maybe I can make some headway there.

Familysearch.org and Rootsweb
are a couple of my favorites. Chroniclingamerica is another one that lists newspapers.
You can also google by county or state your family lived in... Say marion county Iowa genealogy...and come up with a host of sites.
If you know where they are buried, there are grave websites too, many with photos of the stones. Those stones are a wealth of knowledge.

I'd love to research my mom's side of the family, but she's Japanese. She was the first in her family to come to the US. I would love to know if there were any Samurai in the family. I don't speak or read the language, so this is going to take help. My dad's side will be a bit easier. I did find him on the 1930 census using a free trial of ancestry.com. He was only 2 at the time...I know his side goes back to Scotland and Wales, and also heard that my Great Grandfather was in the civil war. It would be great to find out about them like on the TV show "Do you know who you are?"

GREAT GREAT grandfathers, one on my mother's grandfathers line & one on my mother's grandmothers line ... both fought in the Civil War. One for the Union. One for the Confederacy. Both from the same community. Both buried within feet of each other in the same cemetery.

I was at woostock and I dont remember seeing you there. Your next stupid comment?
I don't suppose an 11 year old would have paid much attention to a very pregnant woman at Woodstock, would he?

I didn't say he fought. I was told he was a doctor. Many private physicians as well as commissioned officers served in the war on both sides, and could be considerably older than the average enlisted soldier, although he may very well have been a great great grandfather. My mistake for not adding a "great" there, but there's no reason to be nasty or condescending. Not very "cheerful" of you with all the BOLD type, mean tone, and added emoticons.
And I AM actually 47 now. I have no reason to lie about my age, or anything else for that matter.
