For many, finding that perfect someone is important. As humans we are born social beings keen to form all sorts of relationships with the people we meet. But being afraid of a romantic relationship is not something to be ashamed of. It happens, and it's understandable.
Live your own life. Don't try to build your life around others because it can make getting hurt by someone that much worse. If you are your own person then you will develop confidence and, regardless of what happens in a relationship, you'll be able to find happiness. If a person comes into your life and sweeps you off your feet then don't let that opportunity pass you by but never get a rebound and expect him to be "the one".
The person in your life is not going to come knocking on your front door.Choosing to wait "because I'm too shy to ask someone out" can lead to "so I should work on becoming less shy gradually and spend more time with friends, meet new friends and flirt without anything being serious until I'm comfortable with romance."

It's understood that when you first meet someone you're getting the very best of them. But if they change into someone completely different after you've invested time and emotion, that really hurts.

WOW..this thread has been around a while.
What scares me most in a relationship is lack of communication. People tend to not want to talk to each other. If you cannot communicate, then there is no way a relationship can be developed.

Haveing to let someone else lead for awhile. The man wants to be the strong one never likes to show weakness and in my case i dnt show weakness i dnt like to depend on anyoneyet when two people r in a relationship one thats gonna last a while someone has to back down and let the other step up .

Trust... I'm jaded from my experiences.. I'm scared to death to trust someone.. But it's not fair.. I find it to be a huge obstacle for me in dating..
Saying I love you can be overwhelming too.. But then I think if I really love him and something happened.. I would regret never telling him..

Discovering down the road that he has anger issues..or him changing into a person I don't like..
I absolutely cannot tolerate a jealous man..or a lazy one either..it takes so long to really get to know one another..falling in love, marrying him then discovering he's a woman beater..my first husband beat the tar out of me over little things..but that side came out a yr after marriage..
it's a leap of faith to marry..

Its been over 8 years since my divorce, you know what has kept me from being in a relationship all these years? FEAR.......I have been scared to death of being hurt again and afraid to take the chance on love again with the wrong person. I am at the point in my life now, even my deepest fears of being hurt is much less then being alone for the rest of my life but don't take this as desperate I am still only going to get involved with someone which is my type.

Have been in several relations shops in the past 13 years. What I have found is mostly women liars and gold diggers. Doesn't matter if on a free site or paid site. Alot of women have unemployed meaning the are living off the government or the EX. Get a job and be real.

I agree about the lying part. Finding out about mental issues, or her making new decisions about how you should change your life, to fit her's. How many times a night she will wake me up with snoring, grabbing hold of me in her sleep, or pushing me out of bed. (It has happened) That marriage word for sure.

The scariest part to me is trusting them not to be "like all the others". 
Same here. I agree with just about everybody so far. I am who I am and expect the same from the woman I'm with. I guess I've let the pain of the past get in my way at times. I refuse to make another child but don't mind meeting a woman that has kids provided she is a decent parent. I've met some that are scary as moms.

seems l keep choosing the wrong woman .
I do try and change in what i look for,it seems l have this mind set of being a knight in shining armor and saving the princes .Only to find out l brought home the dragon .
What scares the person in a commitment relationship that has ended is doing something for themselves and feeling guilt they commitment to this person only to have choosing the wrong person .
So in all we fear ourselves not the other person
