Since I'm semi-retired, I avoid going in the late afternoon when it's rush hour jammed with the rush hour crowd like the plague! I have been going anywhere between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM, 3 times a week. You can work out much more productively when you don't have to wait for benches or machines and have to settle for the only ones available that you didn't want to do in the first place. And people aren't on top of each other in the locker room at the times I go.

Just listen to your body. Some people can exercise at night and sleep ok. Others will exercise at night and stay up for hours. Just find a time that works best for you.

I think going around 7pm, and doing a full 45 mins cardio and 20 mins weights (switch it up every now and then, Stretch and cool down) come home shower and bed. About an hour before bed, have a healthy snack and sleep like a baby, or burn more calories and sleep like a baby

The best time to exercise is the best time that you will consistently make it to the gym or where ever that you workout.

There are studies done with circadian rhythms, growth hormone, testosterone peak times and such that show that the best time to workout is between 11:00AM and 5:00PM. That is, if you have a normal sleeping pattern. But that doesn't mean squat if you dont get to the gym!

Another thing to note is that your spine hydrates itself at night. So, if you must workout in the morning, wait at least an hour after waking up, or the chances of you getting a spinal injury will rise.

I agree with some others, exercise when you CONSISTENTLY want to exercise, that way you stick with it. Time of day doesn't matter.

I've found that earlier in the day works best for me, if after 700pm I get so energized that it's hard to go to sleep. Everyone is different though.

Those whom already noted consistency are correct. Time of workout not as important as routine. So long as you will stick to the designated schedule as well as a proper nutritional plan, that is what's most important.

It depends on your diet and daily schedule, most ppl dont have time to workout mid day and are too tired in the evening after work. For most ppl the early morn is just out of the question. 1st alter your diet enabling yourself to have more energy throughout the day. Then depending on your work schedule start out w/ at lease 3x a week and 45 mins per session but once your acclimated turn it up to at lease an hour per session and 5x a week.

I lost 30 lbs in 4 months just by altering my diet, I've kept it off and lost another 15 by actually working out. My body is nowhere near perfect but I'm now at my high school weight and in the best shape of my life. Just to fit my work schedule I workout either times of the day depending on what day of the week it is. It helps w/ muscle confusion.

I start every morning with a brisk dog walk followed by a swim, then end each day with yoga, another brisk walk and finnally a swim before bed. The morning swim helps me wake up and feel great for the day and my late swim helps me to fall asleep.

Morning for cardio, 3-4pm for strength training. Doesn't matter what your routine is, it matters how many minutes/hours have passed since you woke up and "reset" your circadian clock. Later at night is just going to be more difficult to work out and less rewarding, your body is preparing to shut down and rest for the night.

For those who work nights or who have a messed up sleep schedule, it may be different, but I know working nights isn't good for people, not sure their circadian clock would be functioning the way it should be in the first place.

Depends on whenever, but generally I would say early in the morning would be best. It gets you charged up for the day.

Agreed. My work schedule is all over the place. Some days I have to leave the house extra early. Some days I have to work late. I suggest picking a time of day you can commit to on the most regular basis. For me is lunch time. I can get in at least 30 minutes and still eat a sandwich so I ALWAYS do some sort of workout over lunch. If there's time in my day to do something before work or after work I will do two workouts. But the lunchtime thing has become habit/routine.

Really it depends on the type of work out you're doing if into bodybuilding it is best to try as close to the same time regularly if you're able, but only do a couple of muscles group each day, like chest and tri, back and bic, shoulders and back legs and abs. The reason in this is you want to tear the muscle down on the day that you are working it and you will always be hitting a primary muscle and and secondary muscle at the same time on each exercise. after hitting at lease two of the muscles groups wait at lease 24 but better to wait 48 hours before hitting those muscles again. Reason on this is to let those muscles fully recover before breaking them down again. Your body actually grows and recovers while sleeping. bodybuilding is 33 1/3 training, 33 1/3 diet, and 33 1/3 resting, this is just my personal opinion I was in bodybuilding for for about 10-11 years

Like what other say it really depends on your own personal capabilities. I exercise early in the morning if I can, during noon time, 3 pm, and or 6 pm. It just depends on your sleep, busyness/work, and mood.

Well I work at night, so the best time I work out is in the morning when I get off. I do about 30-45 minutes, then go home, get some rest, about 3-4 hours, get up and do the same thing. It depends on your schedule. But you have to schedule it, whether it's an hour or 15 minutes is better than none at all

that is something that you will find out over time as you progress.
I do try to be consistant with my start times. Monday & Wednesdays I start about 10am.
on Fridays since my routine is different and more intense, I try starting by 9:30.
just remember to keep a schedule and get in the habit of doing something!

I do like going to the gym when no one else is there in the early morning hours though...if I want to try a new machine I'm not as self conscious that way...

this seems to be true, working out in the morning would help boost your metabolism.

i prefer to workout in the middle of the day because if i work out at night its usually hard to fall asleep. and theres no way im getting out of bed early to work out or for anything else i like my sleep! so its a good thing my schedule allows me to work out mid day but if i couldnt then id do it right after work

A.M. Not that many people within the gym to distract you and in at least within my case, I have more energy when I wake up and do some of my exercises rather than later in the day when so may people hog all of the machines to the point where you can't get a good workout in. Especially the Bench Press machine and Squat rack.....gamer

I agree with consistency... I personally tend to get extremely tired and sleepy after a good workout, rather it's a 5 miles brisk walk around the neighborhood or 1 hour yoga/spinning/weight training/etc... So I like to workout when I can go to bed right after... typically after 8pm during weekdays, and whenever on weeks and take a nap afterwards... life is already too hectic to limit myself to strict timetable...^^

Every ones schedual is different and level of fitness.Adjust according to times around results of a work out.After a work out one needs a shower.To clean out the pours the workout causes sweating etc...If the work out causes you to be tired and sour then best to work out at night before bed time.Hot upsom salt bath is good for muscle pain.

Well I'm a personal trainer and exercise freak. So I workout in the morning and at night 4x a week.

AM - A full blown 60 minute workout. Either something super intense like the Prowler sled, a stair workout with my 40lb vest on, etc.. Or full body strength training followed by 20-30 minutes of jump rope.

PM - I'll max the treadmill incline out at 15% and walk without holding on for 30 minutes. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to maintain a 3mph pace walking up a steep hill.

I work shifts and don't have a fixed time of day to exercise, but currently I like evenings and night time when the summer heat abates. I wennout last night at 23:49 and walked ten miles, including about 4 miles of unlit country roads. It was peaceful.

I tend to shoot for earlier am but that's because my treadmill is located in a barn loft which means the heat begins to rise and if I put off exercise too late into the day, the humidity can become very oppressive and make it that much more difficult to endure a full hour long workout. If you are paying money for a gym membership within a nice, air conditioned facility, it shouldn't matter quite as much and just your personal preference.

Same here. I try to keep my hands off the treadmill and instead place them on my hips while focusing on the shoulders being held back. You feel it in your hamstrings and a** that's for sure. If you rest your hands on the treadmill bars you begin to pull and it takes a lot of the resistance off. I noticed that as well.

Video footage of a prowler sled here. I was reading an article about cross training in a running mag in Asda yesterday and the exercise of dragging one of these things was suggested to strengthen hamstrings and glutes. I guess a similar effect could be achieved with a large tyre and some rope.

The Prowler is hands down the BEST conditioning apparatus ever invented.

Yesterday was Prowler day. Had 180lbs on the sled, plus the sled itself weighs 65lbs. Pushing it down 30 yards and immediately back was one round. Did ten rounds. For the first five rounds I kept it to 90 seconds to two minutes rest between. However by the time I got to rounds 8-10, I was relying on sheer will and needed three minutes rest between rounds.

Thing is humbling beyond words. I usually do it 2x a week mixed in with all of my other training.

I want to towel snap all the prissy songs hanging into a treadmill with the speed and incline too high at my gym. They have no clue how much they're minimizing their workout. I like to up the incline and use my arms pumping to help power me thru the next step. It might not seem like much but it's an excellent full-body workout. My weak point has been my shoulders after my car wreck and I feel like this has definitely helped me.

Whatever time you will stick with is best!

I get up early and do a cardio glide type thing for around 45 minutes

But I eat a big lunch a few days a week before doing weight lifting after work. No fuel equals no energy!

But... Empty tummy low intensity cardio equals more fat burn.

You can google empty stomach cardio and fat burning.

I think it works.
