I hate admitting this, but I love that movie. Especially the coffee scene. Such a romantic conversation between him and the girl, and then he leaves and then....WHAM! He gets totally smashed by the car. How romantic.

If you look at the behind the scenes on the DVD, the first Phantasm was 1978, second 1988, third was 1993, fourth was 2000. i used to have all four, and knew a gal who was almost cast as the lead in the last one. She knew Reggie Bannister and Don Coscarelli.
the first played all thru the late 1970's into the mid 1980's at the mid night movies, before VHS, Along with Dawn of the Dead, Excalibur, Rocky Horror, and the other cult classics.

It's really a shame about Phantasm. Don Coscarelli spent the rest of his career riding on the success of that movie. With the usual witlessness of filmmakers, he decided that if one Silver Sphere is scary, 3 would be 3 times as scary. And why not have HUNDREDS of Silver Spheres? I shouldn't assume it was the director, maybe the decision was forced on him by the backers. Like, in order to get financing for the original Nightmare on Elm Street, the director had to change the ending to make more of a hook for a possible sequel.
My favorite review of Phantasm, when it came out, was the reviewer who made the observation that "this movie has the best flying blood-sucking steel sphere I've seen so far this year."

I thought about this last night as I was watching a classic film from the 90's...and that thought was what films I felt were the TOP FIVE of the 90's. And so I came up with this list.
5. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS- I was mesmerized by Hopkins portrayal of Lecter. And even as I watch the film twenty some odd years later I am still mesmerized by him. Foster is brilliant as Starling and the night vision scene is still spine tingling good.
4. FIGHT CLUB- Pitt and Norton made this film, and Helena Bonham Carter was freaking sexy. The message in the film is one that still resonates in today's world. Fincher's best film.
3. A FEW GOOD MEN- You can't handle the truth!
2. FARGO- The Big Lebowski is my favorite Cohen Brothers film. But even I cannot deny how excellent Fargo is. All the characters are well played and the story knows just when to add in laughs.
1. THE MATRIX- This film changed the way action films were made. People complained that it was too complex to understand and I do understand that argument. But when you watch the film and you truly "get" it then you understand just how damn good it is.

I actually love Alien 3. Alien fans wanted to compare it to Aliens, which is a classic in its own right. And you simply cannot compare the two.
