I find my survival has been to just go ahead and do a search for metacommunicative pictorial representation of a facial expression.
and use them when I need too!
I will think of some other stuff after supper .....does that work for you nat???

If you really want "surviving" tips, please, please never meet anyone from here without one DH person and one RL person knowing everything about the person you are going to meet... and make sure its a public place.
Hey, trish, remember me forgetting to call you  and you getting ready to call the police when I met someone on a military base in GA? So rule No. 2, make sure you follow up when you are supposed to!

I never got any of those messages from 'apparent' scammers when I was a newbie ... or even now, as an oldbie ... but I have avoided making contact with those who want only to chat in email but not on the threads OR ask for your phone number (or they give you theirs) and want your offline email address (and give you theirs. And I don't go near a contact who says let's IM or Skype when you know nothing about them.
