Definitely, the old movies are better. They have a plot and story behind them. Does anyone on here remember I'd Climb The Highest Mountain. Just ordered it off amazon. Come out in the early 50's. A story about a southern preacher who married a city girl and settled down in the blue ridge mountains. They went thru a lot of problems but stuck thru it with each other. Starred Susan Hayward and William Lundigan. DEFINITELY A CLASSIC. COULD WATCH IT OVER AND OVER.

I would vote for old over new movies. Old movies had plots, not just violence for the sake of violence, dialogue instead of 60 second sound bytes, romance, not just gratuitious sex, clothing that left some things to the imagination, etc. And I have a very good imagination!

Speaking of novels that made it to the screen - after I have read the novel I am most always disapointed with the movie! Give me a good book any day! JMO

Old Westerns where six shooters fired dozens of rounds with out reloading & in chase scenes with all the shots fired from good guys & baddies , no horses were ever hit , until the modern Westerns arrived in the 50's.

If you ever get the chance to see 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD don't pass up the chance.

It is based on a true story of basically two people during WW2.
Was made into a play, then a movie.

Plot

In 1949 Helene Hanff, in search of obscure classics and British literature titles she has been unable to find in New York City, notices an ad in the Saturday Review of Literature placed by antiquarian booksellers Marks & Co located at the titular address in London. She contacts the shop and chief buyer and manager Frank Doel fulfills her requests. A long distance friendship evolves over time, not only between the two but between Hanff and other staff members as well, including birthday gifts, holiday packages, and food parcels to compensate for post-World War II food shortages in Britain. Their correspondence includes discussions about topics as diverse as the sermons of John Donne, how to make Yorkshire Pudding, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the coronation of Elizabeth II.

Hanff postpones visiting her English friends until too late: Doel dies in December 1968 and the bookshop eventually closes. She finally visits Charing Cross Road and the vacant shop in the summer of 1971.
Principal cast

Anne Bancroft as Helene Hanff
Anthony Hopkins as Frank Doel
Judi Dench as Nora Doel

In todays movies there's to much expolsions & humans jumping up & over distances no real person could ever achive, these one man Army heros ...suck , showin up whole combat teams wipeing out enemies of dozens single handedly ,I prefer the truth ..."Apocalypse Now" showed the strength & weakness plus stupidity of men in combat zones,

I agree with you Fish. Some of the stuff they show in new movies is virtually impossible but the young people eats all that junk up. The flashing, the jumping and flying thru the air, getting shot at 200 times but never getting hit. What a vivid imagination.

After John Wayne made his star shine on the movie screen in "Stage coach " a black & white movie , he swore he'd never wear new Blue jeans again , as the dyes in the cloth caused him much irritation, thus other than military or romance movies he wore tan britches of one shade or another,

Oddly enough some of the best films made each year never get seen by the general public , Hollywood pushes so much crap on us every month some hairbrained writer & producer pumps them out ,even the movie snacks are a rip off , you can feed even with todays inflation a family of 3 , at least two good nurishing meals , for what two large containers of POP CORN & two large drinks cost at the up scale movie houses,I have a Daughter in -law that refuses to watch black & white movies ????? strange huh ?otherwise she's ok.

The political correct pun about Indians , was a goody !!!( now about another ethnic group who are no longer negros , colored folks ,or the other "N" word but now "Black African Americans " enslaved in the movies , Which would be falsehood , then Negros were not for the most part American citizens .Put the good movie Roots , up against the videos of Dennis Rodman in North korea ,what a fine upstanding young , ex Basket ball star player "Black Afro American " on a peace mission , that idiot is.

I have several objections to the movies now being pushed on the viewing public , first ,Far, far to much violence , murder , & mayhem , expolsions plus fire balls that would in real life kill the persons exposed being that close , next the night time scenes are piss poor due to over darkened scenes , then the action shots are far to loud in sound , near knock ya off yer seat, but they fail to up the soind for conversations , near whispers , now as for nudity , we started out life nude & so did Adam & Eve , rather see couples loving in a sex act than chopping each other up & blood & guts flying all over the screen..or viewing Jesus being beaten , & suffering bloody , nailed to a cross,This hurts me deeply .

Canvas it's finally dawned on me , where i first saw you , starring in a MAX SENNET's Bathing beauties of 1928 , a short risque film for it's time , you wore a flannel bathing suit that showed your legs from calf to foot.& was flirting with a Key Stone Kop.or was that yer twin ?
