I know many nice people in New York who are very nice. Born and raised in Brooklyn, the mean ones usually are just expressing frustrations due to many things. Some are mean because their life sucks, some are mean because they are unhappy about self image that they cant change. Some are mean because they have unresolved underlying issues from childhood. I'v been to places over seas whos people are meaner.

its all because new yorkers live amongst too many ppl... over population... in ur apt bldg u have ppl surrounding you ppl on top of u n ppl too the left of u n ppl to the right of u n ppl right under you... n when u r not home u have tons of ppl in ur space on top of touching u... out side of new york is way more lax n spread out n its easier to be friendly.. in my opinion.. that makes so much sense.. lol

I'm very happy, happy people can only tolerate so much from other people. I just think we are too blunt for everyone. Outsiders can't handle us. That's why they are outsiders, and not new yorkers.

Every mean person I've ever met was angry at the world. Most who are mean are those whom have not resolved underlying issues. As a result, they justify their meanness on others by stereotyping. Meanness comes from anger, and it is not defined by the city you live in.

NYC people are very defensive and think that others are after them. When you smile at a New Yorker they immediately think u have bad news or need something from them. No genuine people left. I try to smile and do a polite thing at least once a day to a stranger.
New York City folk are too hard for their own good.

Haw about to think on the possibility that a person is mean with those who are mean to him / her?
Nice to everyone I meet. Nice unless they aren't, then I just move on. Maybe it isn't just a niceness thing. Have seemed to witness a lot of rudeness. To those around it may not seem rude. To those not from the area it can come across as rude. I grew up there so expect it a little. Some call it being direct or straightforward... Sometimes I can concur with that, not always, as there is a difference.
Each area is different also. Catskill mountains seem nice. Further away from the city gets a little more relaxed too.
I have also met some very nice people up here on my last two trips. Living in the South for past 20+ years, might take a little to get used to the North again.
