H & F:
I am an "old" Class V whitewater and I'm getting back "on". I do EXTREME mountain biking but have a really old bike (see photo of my Specialized, no disc breaks )
Losing "weight" or looking "good" will never be my objective...can't be.
I'm in the gym 5 days a week and training in other ways 2 days.
I am a hobbyist - but dead weight body lifting from 'shall we say a bed' to anywhere is a motivating factor - IN ADDITION to "prepping to Run Class V" . (I have an old rotator cup injury in the shoulder; but have re-trained it out - I think).
I found an OUTSTANDING fitness coach by accident on this DH site. - So, the question isn't about me - it's for YOU H&F GROUP Peeps:
What do you do; why; how do you inspire others or whatever you want if it is
H & J (and on-line Coach, you are hard-wired) -
If you wanna throw in FREE WEIGHT tips/preferences that would be IDEAL. Supplements and things aren't an option for me. SIZE is no limit - building physical strength for adventure sports is. BUT I'm not typical and I have ALOT to learn so,
If you pursue CARDIO and a beautiful "body image" - please put it here!!!
***
And Gym Love - Please feel free to let it "flow" - you are a triathelete - and committed -

I have sent the last year recovering from a bad Car accident, regaining strength and a balanced body (from the left to right side of your body).
Prior to the wreck I ran 40-50 miles a week. I also danced 2-4 nights a week. Western swing dance and two steps to include the flips and aerial maneuvers. My goal is to complete a half marathon before summer gets here. I'm still a little afraid to fly thru the air for risk of landing wrong and re-damaging the back/neck/hip damages I endured.
In preparation I worked with a rehab trainer. Started at ground zero barely being able to use 2 pound dumbbells and complete 3 sets of a total body circuit, 10 reps each.
My fitness goals have never really been size or strength. Just endurance and the ability to live my life doing things for myself. Opening my own pickle jar. Mowing my own very steep yard with an old school heavy push mower, being able to wrench on my own vehicles.
I have had a few recovery relapses if you will. Overworking back muscles or thing muscles takes longer to recover from it seems. The thing that holds me back are my neck muscles. From running or lifting those are the most sore and kinked after even a 3-4 mile jog. But it's all progress.
Yoga has helped immensely. To regaining flexibility and strength. As a muscular balance from the left side to right side of my body. I try to make yoga, running, core work, and free weights a part of my workouts in every week. I've integrated some cycling in the gym as well as elliptical work. I feel anything I do at this point is only forward progress.
I did a lot of research into the 'barefoot running' concept as well and feel that has immensely helped. It was awful at first, you use every muscle ENTIRELY different, but when your body works in its own natural rhythm, not one forced by shoes or gait-changing fashion statements, I've been able to run faster and further. But I still have yet to make a run over 6 miles

I'm a tri-athlete, OP.
I get my dead arse up off the sofa -- periodically -- don't want to over exert those old muscles, tendons & ligaments.
I walk --- from the sofa to the restroom ---- several times a day --- I don't wear a pedometer,, so I don't know how many miles I travel in a 24 hour period.
I do upper body exercises -- on demand -- by opening and closing the frig and lifting a Lodge cast iron skillet from floor-level to range top height.
^^^^ That's every day!
Every other day ---- I do the same --- but add dexterity moves by putting on clothes and shoes.
I am fit as a fiddle!

cheer there are many serious workout people on here. you are not one!!!
you really have nothing to add here so please stay out!!!!!!!
I have just recently changed my routines for both MONday and Wednesday.
I have moved from doing 15 heavy reps in my 2nd set and then moving down to the
8-6-4 routine. these routines involve my arms, shoulders and chest.
I was feeling a little burned out and almost didn't want to workout.
my Friday legs routine is still my old routine. but I have bumped up many weights on many sets! my plan is to do these routines for 7 weeks then to deload on the 8th week.
both of my preworkout products tell me to stop taking it in the 8th week. so no
big loss!!!

.... Quick Question: Spokes on Wheel.
The Specialized Racing Team (retired - before I bought it - no disc brakes, etc.
Has 2 front rim disloged spokes (NOT damaged or bent, etc).
Happened in a CLEAN environment wasn't riding it at the time.
I've been told just poking them back in is a ; but, I just want to ride light and local (not wilderness runs)
& I checked out the "best" rated "independent-like" bike shop in the area dressed like a derelict (my preferred weekend style) w/o my "bike" looking to buy a PI headband and the OWNER was, well, .... apparently they "specialize" in 'high end $ people ". It's LA/Burbank.
Local non-riders say I need to have it "trued"; just to ride around the block - I'm thinking "no".
Any input?
(BTW: I know for a fact that enduro motorcycle forks used to be SUCCESSFULLY straightened by a sledge hammer; so .... I'm thinking can't i just "tuck" them back in? It's the front tire - NO damage to the rim at all, it's quick release and I could walk home...)
Sorry to sound dumb - safety is NOT my concern - I am not riding hard at present I just want to get back on it local without financing the film industry
****
If it has to go in for the spokes; then I will take it to the best-rated shop; but I'd rather WAIT for a better reason...which will come at a future date.
Thanks in advance!

... not a bike specialist, just got desperate and there are some triatheletes out here (which I am soooo not)...
Hear what you are saying about "where to look" - a good bike is in the thousands.
I think Gym Love has a tri bike in mind - she probably did some background research -
you out there Gym Love ?
***
Here's how I picked mine:
I bought one bicycle (ever) - knew I wanted a bike better engineered than I could ever fully "use" and with good handling as well as wheel swap out capability (mountain bike to street wheels) - did some online research and HUNG out where the 'known' hard core hobbyists were - the name was "Specialized". Looked it up on line, bought the 1999 Racing Specialized Team Version (new) January of 2000. Turns out Specialized had a patent that expired a few years ago and it WAS the best for my needs at the time ... now the field is WIDE open ...and I don't like to take "her" in for minor repairs cuz I don't want to hear the store owners (in LA) tell me WHY I need to buy a "modern/hip" bike.

What's your bike's name! I know it has to have one.
Lol
I just have a hard time bringing myself to buy a bike that costs more than half the vehicles I own. For as little as I would use it. I would like to think I would. But in reality I know I wouldn't make myself do it. I would rather wander out the door barefoot and start running.

Any input? For a bike that your just riding around the neighborhood, heck yes you can replace the spokes. I have not changed a spoke in many years but it can be done.
just keep your airpressure at the recommended pressure.
Ride happy!

Can't buy soft rides anymore but mine was $3,500 looking at new ones for racing now there about 4,000-4,500. But mine is for triathlons not just road racing mine has to be very light and have excellent arrow bars and no less than 32 gears. My side ride has 32 gears now. Only bad thing about my sport is it involves all 3 swim, bike, run which it gets very very expensive.

Strength and fitness training is very simple, yet do to many vast opinions, people don't get the benefits they desire. Train (1) muscle group per day, get it done in an hour or less. Do no more then (3) movements at (5) sets each. The following week when you work that muscle again, do (3) different movements to confuse the muscle to tone and grow. Concentration and a slow controlled movement wins the race. Follow that, and stop eating carbs and cheese, and you will be thrilled with the results.
