That's just it jedi, many persons DO believe they CAN govern themselves, and in the realm of 'living right' which is essentially a view of loving others as they love themselves, they already do!
I would suggest your initial opener was wrong from the get go.
We see the problems of today because (my belief) we are loosing the ideal that the family is the unit of government.
Read Charles Eastman. I see a lot of your threads on the Indian. He wrote a small book called the Soul of the Indian. Very interesting! He was part of the attempted 'assimilation' project attempted by Whites, was educated and if recollection serves me he was present at wounded knee. Don't quote me on that one, got to run, but do your self a favor.
Read it.
Sobering!

I feel there is much truth in the opening post, one who is deemed crazy isn't in need of being incarcerated in a hospital, no more than a patient at a normal hospital needs to be in a traumatic environment while they're trying to recover from surgery.
Treatment is all about environment, complementing the physical / emotional situation with the appropriate settings to realign the body or mind to its natural state.
Government is the main factor altering our lives to strict standards from cradle to grave, interfering with the flow of life and love experienced from the heart.

Stop "learning" all the crap others want you to believe and think for yourself. It's rewarding and surprisingly effective.

To the OP Jed::
I'm enjoying the premise and direction of your concepts, but the details are too vague..
The world is rapidly reaching a severe crisis point due to overpopulation, waste,
greed, resource mismanagement, and suppression of technological advancement to the
free market. Independent thoughts of self empowerment are all fine and good, but
without subsequent actions both aggressive and passive there will be insufficient
opportunity to pursue any useful results of self empowerment. Pray tell, what courses
of action can you or anyone offer that individual independent thinkers may consider
that are at once practical and eventually effective?
BTW "people" and "some people" are non sequitur in that the concept and task of
governing was created as a benevolent process within the tribal/familial unit as a
function of survival, as opposed to the materialism of power and wealth... Someone
has to govern (make decisions to the benefit of all) but what is their actual
motivation?

I'm in a position where I can start growing gardens and connecting with my locals already, a small step, but full of opportunity and potential. For others it may be hard, they may live in places where they can't legally grow anything.
We must all accept our present position in life and take steps toward a better tommorow. Sitting around doing nothing may feel nice, but over time the fact that you're doing nothing may begin to eat away at you like it did me.... Just sheer rage at impossible odds.
Lately I've been going around town putting up signs to inform the public, I figure maybe they just don't know what's going on. So take it to the streets. Get your two cents out there and at least you'll know you tried.
Keep sending out info, keep digging for info, stay focused on growing and evolving personally. The further we advance ourselves the easier it'll be for others to see how far they too can grow. We have to "push" each other.
It's taken months, but some of my lazy neighbors have begun to take action developing their yards into something more. Others are talking, and I hope to help those I can in the future.
There are many pages on Facebook always sharing inspiring and educational resources that we too can share with our friends. I'm always sharing stories and images from there to here.
Earth we are one.
The Mind Unleashed.
This page will grow your mind.
Sometimes I get new ideas while dwelling on the disfunctional system we've inherited.
Like opening up a restraunt where it's run by a chief, you partner up with single locals to cook your own meal with the chief's guidance. Daily and weekly favorites could be advertised on a sign, so they know what is on the menu. It would double as cullenary arts, save people the trouble of shopping, cut back on staff and lower the price of eating out. And maybe you could hook up with someone who isn't trying to feel you up right off the bat.

Man, 98, free from lung cancer for over 30 years: eats foods from his own garden, never had chemotherapy
by Raw Michelle
Natural News
When Greek native Stamatis Moraitis was living in the United States, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and told he had just nine months to live. At the time, he was in his mid-sixties.
Here's a glimpse at his timeline, but don't worry about breaking out a box of tissues: six months into his journey, he started feeling significantly better. Twenty five years later, when he went to visit his U.S. doctors during a trip from his native Greek Island, Ikaria, he learned that his doctors had died. Today, he's living life to the fullest as a vibrant 98-year old.
Fresh, healthy foods key to combating cancer
Genes are the key. Doesn't matter what you eat, smoke, drink, or do. The second your momma spit you out you were pretty much programmed. Doing "healthy" stuff or not might make a very small difference, but the way you were made rules 99% of it. So it doesn't matter much what you do otherwise unless you do something really dumb. Besides, you'll look real stupid denying yourself life's pleasures while you are laying around dying of "nothing".

I'm in a position where I can start growing gardens....
OK, organic nutrition, good start, healthy body more likely to support healthy mind,
genetics only provide the ABILITY to recover and be healthy, one must live a healthy
lifestyle!
Another would be to search out products made in USA in organic harmony... recently replaced 2 couches and loveseat with US made futons, 3 sizes, 1 each, farm grown poplar
from Georgia, mats from N Jersey, covers from California!! Cutting boards from
Tennessee, wood, not plastic.. Good stuff out there keep looking...
Another is small but steady contributions to politicals that actually have the rights
and concerns of middle class americans at heart (as opposed to corporations), no matter what state they represent--
$5 each from 5 million people makes a difference...
Same with organizations that promote ZPG and clean energy research and development...
Recycle, avoid waste and litter, start small, encourage your friends and relatives
and co-workers, teach by example..
READ!!! Even popular fiction for entertainment contains useful info as in order to
create believeable premise and background, authors must give some layman's information
from research, and these can be easily checked, causing further education by osmosis,
beneficial and painless!
Anyone else?
