I used a P38 to open my c rats after heating them with plastic explosive from a claymore. Well, they didn't issue sterno. What's a redneck to do?
Fruit c*cktail and a John Wayne bar for dessert. You aint livin' 'till you've dined in the field with a fresh (butter bar) going by the book.

Anything with the cheese and crackers! Loved that cheese. As far as main course, it would have to be the chili mac.

Chicken noodle soup. Add a crunched up cracker. A little salt and pepper. Tabasco is optional for heat. And walla, chicken pot pie! Or a sad version of it

I remember the LRRP rations, we would get them once in a while. They had a chili con carne that wasn't half bad but you had to soak the beans a bit and warm them or they would be hard as hell!
Dad used to send me a box every couple weeks, Spam, Vienna sausages, little cans of stuff like tuna, beef stew ,Ritz crackers, Cheez Whiz, Chef Boy r Dee ravioli....he would slip a couple c*cktails like ya get on planes in there also...man it was heavenly! Today I wouldn't eat half that crap but I was sure glad to get it back then.
I think I lived on fruit c*cktail, pound cake and pears most the time....I couldn't eat the ham and beans, or those eggs....hell, the gooks wouldn't eat em!

The recipe for Ranger Pudding goes back at least to Vietnam. The difference is we got those condiments and cocoa, instant coffee etc in slightly different packages.. but its all the same. The idea was make the pudding so you get those extra calories..
In the 501st I invented "babyshit"...I would get a can of crackers, usually Ritz in my care package and we would open a few cans of C's, didn't matter which ones. Crumble the crackers, mix it up throw in some hot sauce and heat (C-4).....babyshit!

Hey Currahee.Me and cowboy been posting about Forward Observers. He tells me that the infantry FOs were Air Force.Ours were mostly artillery, but they were trained to call in arty, mortars, direct naval fire and close air support from fixed and rotor aircraft. All of our officers were also trained to do it. I never met a single airman assigned to a infantry company while I was in Vietnam. Did you?

I saw, MET, served, and owe my life
and the well being of my squad to MANY "FO's"..
But SAME AS YOU...
NEVER knew of ANY that were not either Marine or Army..
I'm not saying it aint so..
But I personally never seen any " flyboys" on the ground.
We had SUPERB air support from them,
and they many of times have changed the outcome
of our unit's contact.. but alas..
only " FO's " for us were either grunts or jarheads..
I AINT arguing with cowboy...
Same as you,..........
WE were trained in calling in
artillery and air support.........
AND I have done so myself on NUMEROUS occasions...
The ONLY flyboys Air Force folks I EVER personally met
were the ones I beat the h e l l outta

They may know how to fly......
but their " humbuggin " needs a bit of work..

Again Google:

Forward Air Control;

Or Look up Wikipedia: Ground forward air control.

And if you never saw one, You were never In a front line unit!!!!!!

You are describing a "Forward observer", One Who stayed Behind you and called targets.

Hey cowboy! You are out of line! First off your REMF a** was never in the dirt! Don't diss grunts! digital was Currahee, he was in the shit as a rifleman. The Air Force has never won a war! Never. It takes grunts, door kickers and men willing to face the enemy in the desert, jungle or wherever they are to win...Im not putting the USAF down , but you hsve no right to degrade grunts!!!!!!! F*ck off cowboy...the Air Force is nothing without ground forces

You always dissing AF and expect no response......Wrong...

Army hasn't won by itself since WW1,

It takes grunts, But it takes AF also and Navy and Marines.

Every time I state a fact you grunts jump my case and say AF wasn't there.

You still did not look up Forward Air Control, Look up 557th Red Horse ( the air field you landed on.)

Forward observer is not Ground Forward Air Control.....

AF was there long before you and long after you went home!!

The below TOPIC and post is taken from TODAY's
forum discussions at my unit website..!!

OUR "BIRD DOGS" - FACs
IP: XXX-- Secured --XXX
Posted on March 15, 2014 at 09:16:13 AM by XXX-- Secured --XXX

Those of you who are attending our upcoming Tunica Reunion in June know that
among those who are joining us are the Task Force 3-506th Unit members who provided
the artillery, medical, aviation support, etc.

One group that will be represented will be members from
the 183rd Reconnaissance Aircraft Company
known simply by us as the "Seahorses"--our FAC or "Bird dogs".
If you are not aware of it, we had several birddog pilots and crew members
to pay the ultimate sacrifice while support the 3-506th.
We will be honoring the 183rd RAC members at our Tunica reunion.
Come join us in doing so. There's no doubt on my part that if it hadn't
been for our FAC pilots and FOs, many of us would not have returned home alive
.
I witnessed first hand, not only from the ground level,
but from the back seat of a "birddog" what an outstanding and heroic jobs
these pilots did. As my "boat trooper" brothers recall,
we had two FAC pilots assigned to our newly reactivated battalion back
at Ft. Campbell, KY in June 1967, who conducted the war-game exercises
to get combat ready and deployed with us to Vietnam in Oct. 1967.
They remained with us until after TET 1968,
before returning to fly "fast-movers" up north.

I want to share a few lines from a message
from one of the 183rd unit members---- XXX-- Secured --XXX.
XXX-- Secured --XXX writes: etc., etc., etc............

ALL " ARMY or Marine " members
with MY/OUR Unit ONLY...!!!
So Mr. fly boy cowboy4672 I say:

Now.. ..????
me and my pals are
outta here..

Was introduced to LRRP or Lurp (sp) rations in 1969. I didn't mind the taste; but, they took too much water to prepare. I carried three canteens and one of those meals used a half canteen. I learned that lesson on a three day climb off the Black Virgin Mountain. Spent the last half day without water; but my belly was full. Water was too damned precious so I stayed with the C-Rats.

The CRat had only just been retired so when I got into the field so we had a selection of 6 MRE's out of the 12 originally fielded.

Meatballs in BBQ sauce (My favorite although it hated me. I always thought rather than hot sauce, MRE's should come with Rolaids. Early on, it didn't come with hot sauce either)

Spaghetti and meatballs (Probably my second favorite yet as with above...it should have came with antacid)

Beef stew (Cold it amounted to lard, warmed up it amounted to stew vegetarian style which sparked more than a couple conversations about suing the Pentagon for false advertisement.)

Ham and chicken loaf (The meal created by Dr Frankenstein. The light marbling was obviously chicken and the pink portions were pork. Not a delicacy by any means)

Dehydrated pork pattie (It still reminds me of what Pringles must taste like before they add any flavor to the chips. The second worst way to eat it was after hydrating it. Dry and bland or falling apart, mushy and bland.

Chicken a la King (Cat food not fit for a cat. It smelled like cat food, looked liked something found on a beach after sitting in the hot sun then blended. I rarely ate the pork pattie but eating chicken a la king once was enough for me.

NOTABLE MENTION

We had 3 drink mixes. Lime, orange and coca. Coca we'd mix with a little water and make a type of granular pudding out of it or eat it straight out of the package. Few people would take the time to heat up water and after retiring the heat tab that came with the C-Rat it was just too time consuming.

Lime drink mixes have to be the absolute worst selling in the mixed drink industry with orange not being too far behind. Later they added cherry.

Cheese/peanut butter and crackers. Both required kneading or you were likely to spill clear oil out on your crackers and would need your K-bar to separate what was left on the bottom away from the package.

John Wayne cookie/Guerrilla cookie. Two cookie wafers covered in chocolate separated by a piece of wax paper that was impossible to remove. As a general practice we tore out as much wax paper as possible and just ate what we couldn't remove.

Pound cake. Probably the easiest thing to eat in the whole MRE. I think there was a fruit cake and later there was a cake with chocolate chips and one with cranberries.
