Depends. What kind of running. Short distances? Long distances? Trail/uneven terrain running?

You might want to start with a gait analysis. Whether you pronate or not, or whether you're neutral. Pronate is the heel wanting to either roll in or out while running. This affects mostly the heel portion of the shoe.

Then look for a shoe with probably medium support. A zero drop or barefoot/minimalist shoe can be unsteady.

No such thing. Running shoes are for running period. Depending on how many miles you run a week. Let's say 40 miles a week for example your sneakers will only last 2 or 3 months tops. I guess you can try trail running shoes. Good luck !

Running barefoot along the shoreline is natural running. I don't know what pace or time you are shooting for but in order to do well and place in your age division you need to run at the very least 25 to 30 miles a week. Also track work and hills will help increase your speed. And of course you need to get in at least one long run in during the week. They have couch to 5k detailed programs. Check out www.coolrunning.com. Good luck with your race. Remember not to start out too fast otherwise you will burn and fail. Positive splits bro!!!

But if I were you I would go by how the sneakers feels. Remember it should be snug but not too snug. It cannot have a lot of room to move around in otherwise you will get blisters. So in essence you really just need to bring your running shoes to the gym and keep them in your bag. I also suggest that you have more than one pair. One pair to train with and the other pair (obviously less miles) to race with. After you run your first 5k you will either get hooked or decide that it's just not for you. Also after the race. Check your results and see where you place in your age category. A lot of times that can be a wake up call.

And finally I suggest you alternate in between anaerobic and aerobic exercise. In other words Sunday long run. Monday weights. Tuesday run. Wednesday off. Thursday weights. Friday run. Saturday either off or weights

All good advice. I also suggest trying Pilates/yoga. Also curious are you lifting for bulk? You may want to go more towards the lean side for running.

For what you're doing I suggest two shoes too.

You will not want to lift in a minimalist shoe. It's just not stable. Also. If you've never worn a minimalist shoe or run in one it takes time to retrain muscles. Read up on barefoot running if you haven't. You can find a good stable medium support shoe that you CAN lift in. And a minimalist shoe. You will want to transition into the minimalist. I could run 20 miles no problem in a regular shoe. I went to a zero drop barefoot-esque type shoe and could barely run five miles without aching. Just a word of advice.

the run im doing isnt really for competition. heck ill just be happy to finish! ive never really ran distance, only sprints.

Also curious are you lifting for bulk?

not really, except maybe on squats since that workout comes from when i used to play football.

Read up on barefoot running if you haven't.

ok, ive read a little about it and i think i may be able to start closer to a zero drop than most since ive always landed mid/fore-foot first rather than heel first or would that be complete lunacy? lol

I also suggest that you have more than one pair

i agree that would be the ideal thing to do but my budget wont allow for that right now so ive started looking at cross training shoes. something with a 6 - 3mm drop?

Monday weights. Tuesday run. Wednesday off. Thursday weights. Friday run. Saturday either off or weights

how far/long should i try to run in the beginning?

Only you can answer that. Listen to your body. Most people who have stayed active, they're able to run 2-4 miles. It's ok to start out with less so you aren't SO sore you don't run for a few days. You want to continue staying active. Don't feel un-accomplished if your first run isn't far.

Back to shoes, you WILL NOT be able to lift in a barefoot/zero drop shoe. So unless you are going to buy two pairs of shoes, you've answered your own question.

5k are only 3.1 miles that's nothing.
Try running 15-20 miles a week lol. A 5k is more of a joke run to runners. It's where we goof off or sprint to see how fast we can go. Unless your trail running or actually putting miles in a 5k you can do in just regular running or cross training shoes again a 5k is NOT a big deal!

I'm very friendly lol. I'm just very straight forward. You need more of a better midsole do to the fact your a larger man with more weight. New Balance makes some good ones. There are 2 models of Nike as well. But your not running much distance so you don't need ones for marathons simple fact is your a beginner runner. Replace them after 400 miles or every 4 months your need to replace your after 4 months you won't get 400 miles in them. Remember the rule of 4. 4 months 400 miles no more than 4times a week (every other day. Your advance runner run up about 5 to 6 times a week.
Oh yeah you ONLY run in your running shoes you don't lift you should know that. Breaks them down faster but then again what do I know I'm a very rude person as you say.

I went with a cross trainer, its very minimal with only a 3mm drop. Long story short, i love em.

the first day i wore them i was pretty sore, mainly my ankles and fascia. but i recoverd really well on my off!

day two went a lot better, i was able to put in more distance even wore them around campus after working out and im really not even sore. I can tell my feet are getting stonger by that alone.

oh, and i did try lifting in them, i dont see any problems with lifting in them as long as i dont go crazy and try to set new PRs

i just want to say tjank you to everyone who commented yall were very helpfull

Sounds good. Keep up the good work. Stay positive. Stay focused but more importantly have fun doing it. Good luck in your race and remember don't go out too fast. Start at like 80 percent then when you hit the second mile let loose and let it fly!!!
