waltree, I'm really not the right guy to answer your question because I don't know much about the furniture manufacturing business but I can tell you this: Our once powerful state in manufacturing in the cloth, yarn, and clothing industry lost a lot of jobs to China and Mexico because their workers would work for $1.00 per hour. If you feel that our furniture industry will not be gobbled up by cheap labor elsewhere I say go for it if it's something that you are interested in.

I say go green. It's the direction we are headed.
Vintage furniture has really come into its own as a result of a few factors. Yes, there is nostalgia involved, but also the search for green furniture. Vintage furniture is green on many counts. The finishes, though not originally non-toxic, have finished off-gassing so they are safe for indoor air. By buying or using inherited vintage furniture you rescue it from going to landfills. Since it has survived so many years, it has a chance of being well made and therefore durable.

Yes and no.

Yes it a great job market and will for many years have a place in North Carolina.

No in that it depends on what company you go to work for. If you find a niche market furniture type or a high end furniture place to work the money is better and the benefits. Sometimes you have to start out somewhere. Newton/Hickory/Lenoir/Morganton is a great area for furniture jobs. The ones that are left are usually great place to work.
