So Planet Fitness has removed their flat bench press which includes the 45 lb barbell. I was curious as to anyone's thoughts as to why they would remove such a basic common staple in all gyms???

Don't forget they have bagel Mondays as well. It just makes me believe that if I fart too loud they are gonna kick me out. They just seem to cater to people who don't really exercise as a norm

One of my favorite things about my gym is that I can openly burp without any side glances. When working out......gas happens! And the only judgment that really happens around my gym is really when someone breaks one of those universal rules. Like sitting on a bench for 15 min doing nothing but texting or leaving 250 on a bar.
I didn't know they had carb Mondays too!?!?! That may make me change my mind.
I can really see a gym like that working for beginners and being a comfortable start. However don't think many who are serious about their workouts can get much out of PF.
Which one did you go to?

I think their business is to keep the gym reasonalbly prices, and in that sense, the will keep costs down. I have no problem with that concept.

They turn up the air conditioning so high that if you sweat too much you're going to get sick from the cold air blowing on top of you. I don't get it. It's almost as if they don't want you to get a great workout in and that includes cardio. And now that they have removed a basic staple of exercise found in almost every gym... It's a shame really to see how we have become so much less of what God created us to be. We aim for average or mediocre when in fact we have no limits and have to shoot for the stars and beyond. We are capable of truly great and amazing things but Planet Fitness is absolutely not a part of that equation!

Quote from jessicaaz: I think some are franchises so may vary......
But PF is the closest gym to me, so went to check it out before joining my current spot. The one I visited looked something like this:
NO free benches incline, decline, or flat
NO real squat racks
NO dumb bells over 75 pounds
They didn't even have floor room for dead lifts or squats.
However......if you like smith machines this is your place!
I have just in the past few months began lifting with free weights. So was definitely looking for a gym that would accommodate me as I improved/grew. Planet Fitness markets the idea that they are a non-intimidating and non judgmental gym. For casual gym goers I guess?!?! May be a good spot for insecure beginners? I love all the meatheads and body builders in my gym. So motivational. And everyone at my gym is super friendly.
However, my gym has no pizza day!?!?!!?
when i walked in one there was a barrel of chocolate in there.

McDonald's is the number one restaurant chain in America. Does that mean it's a healthy place to eat ??? Just because something is popular doesn't necessarily mean that it is good for you. Working out is not supposed to be casual and or easy. It's a constant challenge to push the human body. Removing a basic staple of exercise such as the flat bench press is a huge mistake in my experienced opinion.

I went there to check them out and discovered that the staff was very nice and helpful but they didn't have any recumbent stair steppers which is what my physician wanted me to start out on so I ended up joining the hospital's gym instead. PF also is too damn noisy with the loud music. I'm not into Hip HOp and Urban hits and even if I was, it's not my style to have it blaring out of the speakers while working out.

You don't have to work hard to be fit.
You just have to train.
If you're not trying to reach very ambitious goals, you don't need to work hard, just exercise.
Planet Fitness may encourage a lot of otherwise inactive people to train, so it's a good thing if they attract people who don't want to do hardcore training.

Beginners have to work what to them is hard to get fit. After getting fit they might not have to, but if they hear that they don't have to work hard, they'll stick with the 5 lbs. dumbbells forever or not breaking a sweat or not having to breathe hard. Working hard as a beginner is nowhere near or is very different from doing hardcore trainning.

That's just not true. They can start gradually and become very fit without ever having to work hard.
The body responds to training. No need to train hard. They may get there more slowly but they'll improve.

I am sorry Dan but you sound as if you have no idea what you're talking about. You have to push your body beyond its normal limits in order to see results. It takes years to get in shape. It's a lifestyle not just something you do a few months before the summer hits... I have been working out since I was a child and I know that 10 lb dumbells are not going to get you to where you need to be. You have to sweat, train hard and incorporate a sensible diet in order to look sexy. If what you strive for is mediocrity well then ultimately that is your choice. The choices and or decisions you make in life ultimately choose your destiny and or path.

^^^ it just goes to show the lazy mentality of most people. It's not just about the physical but your mental strength is what drives you to challenge yourself. I think I said this before but losing weight makes you look good in clothes but regular daily exercise makes you look good naked

Add this to another nail in the coffin as to why I would NEVER step foot in a Planet Fitness gym again. Quite frankly, Bullshit rules in regards to weight being used, that dopey alarm goinf off kicking the user out if he drops heavy weight while doing his sets, and playing some of the most godawful music just did it for me. Now this? Good luck for people still actually renewing their membership. I will train at my hardcore gym thank you.....gamer

The Planet Fitness commercial really is annoying and its very hypocritical that they can show a bodybuilder to the door and call themselves a judgement free zone. Seriously, If you are overweight and out of shape and feel insecure or intimidated, that’s a personal problem. Because someone is in shape or muscular, they shouldn’t feel bad for making you feel insecure. The worst thing a person would want to do when it comes to improving their body is being insecure or intimidated. That’s not what you are in a gym for. I've never been to Planet Fitness and I wouldn't join Planet Fitness if it was free! I heard not only is there no bench pressing(I'd never attend a gym with no bench press), but no dumbbells over 80 or 90 pound, no deadlifting, no gallon water bottles, and a lunk alarm goes off from the slightest grunt and sometimes putting a heavy weight down can be confused with dropping them. I love the Mid-City Gym in NYC. Rates are reasonable, there's serious bodybuilders, overweight people, skinny people, beginners, etc. And everyone is courteous and respectful, especially the serious bodybuilders, which Planet Fitness does not seem to understand.

Why can't they at least opt for something healthier to give away as food, like fresh fruit, smoothies, protein shakes, or small salads. As a business, they could connect with other businesses by allowing customers to try samples of weight loss products or products for muscle gain, etc. There are better alternatives than pizza and bagels!
That's sooo wrong to throw temptation out there for those trying to lose weight. I smell conspiracy!!

No conspiracy, everyone deserves a cheat night once in a while, hitting a really healthy salad right now with Bragg Liquid Aminos for dressing and drooling at the thought of cheating tomorrow night In the four years I have done PF, never had a slice anywhere else. 6 or 8 cheats a year will not ruin me, and they do not have a PF within 300 miles of me four months I am in Alaska
Lighten up folks
