Arkansas' statewide newspaper, the Democrat-Gazette, and the free tabloids and newspapers in the area -- the weekly Arkansas Times, weekly Sync, and twide-a-week The Leader -- do a pretty good of covering the news.
They all do a pretty good job of advance notice of events that people can go too with weekly calendar of events.
But three of the papers don't list events going on at the local schools -- plays, concerts, art shows, etc -- and the statewide does a lousy job with reminders of what's going on that day. And the school districts do a lousy job of getting information out to the media that do give them coverage.
Today is Memorial Day and they have a list of closings -- which is the usual jobs except retail, but they don't have a reminder of places doing salutes to fallen warriors in the area, etc!
I don't know about other states, but I'm wondering if people would sign up for a daily email reminder of events listed on a web-based calendar of events that sponsors of plays, school concerts, and local festivals could check before scheduling their events.
As I imagine it, the email would give you the basic information about the event, time, and location and a little write up for the events for today and the next 5 to 7 days.
The sponsors of the website could make money with advertising and charging bars and churches to be listed.
So, today's question is:
Would you sign up for a free service?
Would you sign up even if it was linked to a newspaper or TV website?
Or do you think you wouldn't be interested?
Why or why not?
Do you think this would be better under the Chamber of Commerce or city government? Sponsored by a big local business?
Is there already a service like this that I haven't heard about or we don't have in Central Arkie?
Thanks.

This is a serious post from an ex news editor that may lead to a web-project for Ark.
