You will need to work ALL the muscles in your legs/gluteus to get a balanced and efficient workout.

I am a bigger advocate of free weights instead of the machines. You will work your balance and your core at the same time. Squats. Lunges. Single leg squats. Jump squats. Dead lifts to some degree.

In fact, in general I suggest implementing strength training in addition to your running for all around good health and better running form and endurance.

Two leg days a week. Two arm days a week. And depending on how often you run, one or two ab/back days as well.

Doing strength training will not magically make you grow a large rear, all it will do is firm it up and give it a bit more tone. Unless you go into serious lifting and change your eating plan to condone this type of growth, it won't happen.

I think barbell squats work the glutes the best, especially cause over time, you can work up to some of the highest weights, if not the highest weights, out of any exercises you'll ever do. A lot of bodybuilding competitors eventually stop doing barbell squats because it makes their butts too big compared to their thighs. Not that you'd get the same problem, but just to give you an idea of how well they work the glutes. Just work on progressively adding barbell weight over time, and eat for growth.

Quads are worked well with exercises that keep your back straight and feet a bit in front of you like machine hack squats, smith machine squats and leg presses with feet low on the platform. Even front squats work them well, but those take more guidance from an experienced lifter for you to be able to do them safely.

Don't forget about your hamstrings and calves for balanced muscle/strength development like badchevy alluded to.

*** Also, I'm a big advocate of weighted stair climbing. Either a backpack with some weight added, or a weighted vest. Find a good set of stairs with multiple flights and walk every other step to the top. One at a time on the way down. Repeat for multiple sets for 30 mins.

Not only is it great for the quads and glutes, but it will also help improve your cardiovascular fitness and lung capacity.
