If you missed the Big John Miller Band performing at Local Live at South on Main on Wednesday night, then you missed a great show. The local FIAT dealer and the Oxford American magazine sponsor this weekly show by different bands at 7:30 pm.
One word of warning ahead of time: the food prices are sky-high! And, it’s very loud. The house sound director needs to turn down the instruments and turn up the vocal microphones. The John Burnette Band plays Sept. 24. Kill a little time after work, such as eating some place cheaper, or at the free Jazz in the Riverfront Park at 6 pm with The Brandon Dorris Quintet.
The Arkansas Times lists Michael Eubanks performing at Newk’s Express Café, 4317 Warden Road in NLR, at 6:30 pm on Thursdays.
According to his website, Saxophonist and vocalist Michael Eubanks is a native of Arkansas and a product of the Little Rock schools, college and university. When he takes center stage, he’ll take your breath away with his smooth sax and soulful, sultry vocal style. Michael has released two CDs, “Christmas At Michael's” in 2003, and "On a Day Like This . . ." Summer 2004. Performing since the mid-‘90s, Eubanks was nominated as Play Power Magazine's "2005 “Well Rounded Entertainer of the Year”. His smooth signature sound--whether soprano, alto, tenor sax, or vocals--is unforgettable.
Classical music fans can check out UALR’s Mariposa and Friends, “International Treasures” at 7:30 Friday at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. 569 8977. Turn into UALR at the Stephens Center and take a right by the creek and go into the first parking lot, I believe. Also, in Conway, Anniversary in the Park at 7:30 Friday will feature symphony music at Simon Park .
Commentary: It’s kind of sad that we can’t get anyone north of the river to start a music show starting at 5:30 p.m. so that old working folks could go out for a meal and little entertainment and still get in bed at a decent hour. Don’t club and restaurant owners know that getting up between 0400 and 0500 really sucks when the shows start at 8 or 9 pm! I would love to see Western Sizzler get a small group playing in the back. It and Colton’s are about the only 2 places north of the River that you could have the music in one section and still find a table away from the main stage in order to listen and still talk! Heck, if the River Market venues started earlier, then they might get more of our money. They forget older people have more disposable money!
