I do a variety of cardiovascular exercises - hill sprints, stairs, jump rope, sled pushing, battle ropes, burpees, etc.. They all burn a ton of cals and are challenging. But..incline treadmill walking continues to really kick my ass. Despite the fact that it's low impact, it takes my heart/lungs to the max.
Walk for 2-3 min straight, step off onto the sides to rest for 1-2 min, and repeat for as many times as you can in 30-45 min. Use these settings :
- Max incline of 15%
- Speed range of 3.5 - 4.0 mph
- DON'T HOLD ONTO THE TREADMILL

I've been an advocate of it for a long time because it's a good, low-impact workout that can be done at home on an incline treadmill while watching tv, for those full of excuses.

I haven't quite worked up to that yet. I walk at -3.2 mph with an incline range of 3.5-12. I do that for 30-60 minutes without breaks and without holding on except to check my heart rate occasionally.

You're not lying about that, having tried that personally for a twenty minute session and honestly watched another person throw up during the ten minute mark trying to imitate my session and couldn't take it. But frankly, it would depend on your body mass as well as your personal diet. Since i work out in the mornings, I tend to eat light and have just enough food just to get me through the workout.....gamer

Try to work up to 15% incline at 3 MPH or better for an hour before fishing season starts in Alaska every year....I can then walk (or run) up the stairs-bank with my limit of salmon
At 59 found myself stopping 3 or 4 times to rest and wanting to catch and release only.....that was my motivation to get in the shape I now am in

I've also been an advocate of it for years too, and my clients HATE it...Haha
What's ridiculous to me is how much harder a slight bump in speed is. Finally worked up to being able to do 2 mins on and 1 min off for ten rounds with 3.0mph @ 15% incline. So now I've started using 3.5mph. Since I'm a relatively big guy @ 235, it's a really fsst walk up that steep of an incline for someone my size. It's like 4.2mph plus for someone smaller.
A workout that made me cry uncle the other day is combining 3.5/15% 2 min walks with battle rope circuits. One round is 3.5/15% for 2 mins, 60 secs rest, and then three battle rope exercises. Each exercise has a tabata protocol of 20 on and 10 off. Then 2 minutes rest and repeat. I got through three rounds and had to stop. My goal is five rounds by the end of January.

I usually do tons of walking in the summer and spring, but during the colder months, I'll rotate between the treadmill and the elliptical after the weights. On the treadmill I will often incline it between 10% and 15% and the eliptical I'll use the random program where the resistance varies. I can burn over 500 calories in 30 minutes. And I recently incorporated kettlebell swings as well. Those will kick a** and get the heart pumping as much as the treadmill if you do enough reps. I just feel very fortunate at my age that I can go to the gym 3 times a week, lift heavy, do the cardio and never any serious injuries.

What cracks me up is that you can do 90% of kettlebell exercises with a dumbbell. But since dumbbells have been around forever, and kettlebells are somewhat of a new fitness fad, it's "cooler" to use a kettlebell. But I agree that swings are an awesome exercise.

I guess dumbbells can be okay for single arm swings, but for 2 hands, the kettlebells provide a better range of motion and a better grip, especially on the downswing going between the legs.

I walk on treadmill. What I do is: walk every 5 minutes, jog every 2 minutes on an 0.5 incline for 30 minutes. Before I walk I stretch and do hip adductor and abductor, because my hips feels like it wants to lock up, why I don't know. but when I finish the treadmill, I try to work my side obliques with dumbbell in hand bend to side then raise to starting position, but my sides hurts trying to perform them after the treadmill.

I have a gazelle.
I do 5 miles daily on it total.
It is a simple strategy but it is integrated in with lifting 4 days a week.
From what I have read and seen, just moving and staying active matters.
This little fit bit, getting 5 miles a day. It seems to be working.

Try dropping the speed to 2.0mph but raise the incline to the max of 15%. It will feel like a slow walk at first, but after 3-5 minutes it will start to get very difficult.
When you need to, grip the treadmill and step off onto the sides to rest for 1-2 minutes. Then grab the treadmill, step on to get your bearings, let go and walk as long as you can again without holding on, Try to get in as many rounds as possible in 30 mins. Just remember don't hold onto the treadmill at all while you're walking.

Cool story. Just wanted to double check that you're doing 3.0mph plus @ 15% without holding on right? It wouldn't count otherwise. But if you are doing 3.0 mph plus on 15% incline without holding on for an h0our straight, that is some serious endurance! One progresion you can make is to buy a weight vest and start doing it with added weight. That is when it gets really "fun". Haha

Guess it does not count, I hold on all the time....never knew it made any difference and do it to get my heart rate on the grips. I do Yoga usually on off exercise days and stretch close to an hour after workout so should have the balance, this is the first time I have heard not to hold on. Tell me what the difference is? Never had any formal training, just jumped in and started working out.

Holding on cuts the effectiveness and calorie burn by at least 50%.
Next time you try it, put the incline at 15%, speed @ 3.0, and walk without holding on like you're climbing an actual hill. At least twice the difficulty level.

I did not hold onto the grips. The only time I did is when I check my heart rate. I warm up first for 5 minutes and did it for 25 minutes straight. My body is sore still. My heart rate got up to 183. It gets that high even when I jog on treadmill.

A normal walking gait uses your arms to propel you. You'll use more muscles by not holding on. A lot of the people on the stair machine use a programmed interval thing that automatically increases and decreases speed. It can be a bit abrupt. If you look at the hands of the people on the stair machine, they shouldn't be gripping strongly and using their arms to hold them up, it should be more for balance than anything. Even still, you shouldn't really be holding on.

I'm one of the biggest components of stair training out there. However, I have never and will never be a fan of the step mill. Even before I started doing freelance personal training and was working out of a gym, I'd have clients train on the actual flights of stairs in the building.
The past few years, I've been going to a place called "Communications Hill' which is near my apartment. What's brutal about this place is that one monster flight there equals at least three regular flights of stairs. Since there is 15 of those monster flights at CH, it's essentially 50 flights up and 50 flights down every trip. Now to really push myself to the max, I strapped on my 40lb vest. I briskly walked every other step to mirror a lunge on the way up, and one at a time on the way down. Managed ten round trips in 52 minutes. Now the heavier you are, the more calories you burn. With that said, I weigh 235 without the vest, so it put me close to 280lbs for essentially 1000 flights of stairs. My HR monitor said that I burned almost 1600 calories.

I do the actual stairs coming from the river when in Alaska, and every other step like you say, but in Florida use the stair stepper at PF in addition to the 7 mile bike ride from my home. Not trying to be superman, just want to be able to get my fish up and continue to hunt and fish as many years as possible. I do almost as much stretching-yoga as weight machine exercises or treadmill-stairstepper-bike, try to even it all out. Also my bike riding is on one of the new "fat tire" 4 inch tire bikes so much harder riding than a standard one, use it as that is how I get around in the woods, and sure it burns more calories because of the weight and wind resistance of the giant tires.

Okay, what is the15% incline?? I did 4.0 incline last night at 2.9 for every 5 minutes.
The number on the incline is the percentage. So when I say 15%, I mean 15.0 (the max most commercial treadmills can do).
An awesome treadmill workout I do in my 50lb weight vest :
- 3.0mph/15.0 max incline walk for 2 mins Right after I do a set of 10 slow negative push ups. Rest for 2 mins
- Repeat the walk, then right after I use the treadmill to do ten inverted row pull-ups. 2 mins rest.
I keep switching off between push-ups and pull-ups until I do five rounds of each and ten total of the walk. This is especially brutal wearing the 50lb vest!

My preferred exercise is walking and running but I've been off those with a knee injury for the past 4 months and just doing muscle exercises on machines at the gym - no cardio as such. I tried some incline walking on a treadmill at the gym last night, walking 2 miles at 15% incline in 38:38, which averages at 3.1 mph. Quite arduous. My HR reached 144 BPM. I was watching the distance monitor intently and praying (non-religiously) for the end to come.

That's terrible! Glad to hear that you weren't more seriously injured as it could've been a lot worse. But I did laugh with your not being able to hold on remark.

Good stuff! But the question that needs to be asked is did you walk the entire time without holding onto the treadmill?

Yes. I gripped the sensors a few times to get a cardio reading but didn't hold in any desperate holdingoninular sense, as if to gain succour from the availabilty of holding on as an option, as one might hold on to wreckage in the aftermath of a Titanic-like sea disaster. If that's what you mean.

This is a cool 20 min workout I stumbled across. Start @ incline 6.0 and bump it up .5 after every minute of walking. Ex :
Min 1 - 6.0 incline
Min 2 - 6.5 incline
Min 3 - 7.0 incline, etc..
I went with 3mph on the speed since I'd never done it before. The first ten minutes weren't bad. However the last ten minutes dealing with inclines 11/11.5, 12/12.5, 13/13.5, 14/14.5, and 15 were pretty bad. The worst part was the calf soreness!

While using the weight machines at the gym last week I observed a skinny young woman doing around 8 KPH on a treadmill at 15% incline. She maintained this for quite some time. I was sitting there using the biceps curl machine and trying to work out what that speed is in MPH, which is my preferred unit of measurement. I couldn't do it and had to wait till I got home and Googled. It equated to nearly 5 MPH, which is faster than I can average on a ten mile walk on real roads. Most impressive. The only thing is she was kind of hugging the screen on the treadmill. I dunno how much difference that makes, but it seems like a bad practice.

Anyone can maintain a faster speed if they're hanging onto the treadmill. But what she doesn't realize is that she probably burned half the calories she thought she did. I'd like to see her do 15.0 incline @ 3.5mph without holding on for as long as possible and see what her time is. Whole different ballgame.

Without holding the handle bars except to check my heart rate. I did it Monday and Tuesday of this week. My body is very, very sore now. I'm going to the gym tomorrow also.

Actually my post had nothing to do with you. I was responding to the guy that posted before me.
The one post I made that was directed at you, is when you asked me what the 15% incline was. Since you're still doing only a 4.0 incline, you don't have it at the right setting. A 15% incline means 15.0. So you need to raise the incline up from 4.0 to the max 15.0.
