@amos actually Tanzanite from Tanzania is more valuable. I want one. The mines are played out. It was found in the 1960's. I collect gem stones. I have a chrome diopside from Russia. Only mined 3 months out of the year because of the weather. So here's what I think no one knew how popular Tanzanite was going to be so I'm looking at estate sales. I think it may have been used in costume jewerly.

Women do look good in diamonds. They also look just as good in perfect man-made diamonds.
I even like the chocolate and black diamonds on women.
But real diamonds are expensive, and I doubt if I will be buying any more expensive rings for my next lady. Last time, in the end, as I watched that $10,000 ring walk out the door for the last time, I felt like I must have well overspent by about $10,000!

What about opal and rose quartz?
They are less valuable. The four Precious stones, in order of most valuable to least, are: Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond. All other stones-Opal, Garnet, Rose Quartz, Lapis, etc, are-at best-Semi-Precious. They have some value, but it is less than that of the Precious stones. Semi-Precious stones follow fads. For a time, Opals will be most popular, and so more valuable than Aquamarines, etc. At other times, the Aquamarines, of whatever, will be more popular, and thus temporarily more valuable. A lot of semi-Precious stones also go by more expensive sounding names to get higher prices. Certain Garnets are called "Cape Rubies". Some Quartz Crystal is called "Herkimer Diamond". That sort of thing would normally be considered false advertising, and fraud, but has been so common in the jewelry trade for so many centuries, that it is considered business as usual, and the principle of "Buyer Beware" applies. The courts expect that you should know such things if yo are apt to be shopping for jewelry / gemstones.

I have quite a bit of Tanzanite too...good stones at least a carat and that deep blue purple right before the mines collapsed. And I picked up some of that lovely deep dark green Chrome Diopside when I was working at NASA in Russia, it's mined only in Siberia a couple months out of the year.That's all I brought back with me, amber, mosaic and gems 
Emeralds if of good quality and cut outweigh the value of a similar size/cut diamond.
I got my mom a Burmese Ruby for their 50th that would give a diamond a run for it's money.
Diamond's are artificially priced anywhoos..if DeBeers were to open their vaults..they'd be about 10Cents a carat.
as far as equating "Things" with the value of a person, that's a no go..they're just things..people are far more "valuable".
but I do love my sparklies.

....no. he's actually on it. I did the same while living in Europe for years. Bought diamonds from the mines direct, and Rolex presidentials direct from rolex, and wore the Rolex', and diamonds, and bahts...(gold bands by weight, monetary standard in most mideastern countries) on my wrist coming back to the US declared as my own. A great investment all around. I made almost 90% profit margin. My parents were gifted with his, and hers presidentials, and I'm driving a quarter million dollar car sooo...I'm saying artokol is not a whack. My diamonds helped some in my going liquid in 2011, and I still have a few left to admire, and use in settings. I now like to pan for gold, emeralds, pink amethysts, and diamonds on my own for fun in my world adventure tours. And I have some wonderful adventure touring gem stories to tell....16 ounces of gold nuggets out of walker pass in cali in 48 hours in 2001. Pulling nuggets out of coolidge. Climbing 10,000 foot mount blackmore in Montana with freinds, and hitting the mother load of emeralds on new years 2010. Picking amethyst at home in Arizona on tribal lands while scouting alabaster, and selling them, and donating the money to the new museum, and library. Digging diamonds out of blue clay in riverbeds in arkansas, and minnesota. Each excursion, and adventure has paid for itself.

The stones I admire the most are copper sulfate....turquoise. I enjoy all the colors, and variations. And have amassed a wonderful selection from family mines over the years for my inlay works.

Interesting direction. I really didn't see this conversation becoming an investment seminar. I also didn't know an individual could purchase diamonds direct from the mines. I'll be researching that later.
From my own personal gem mining experience, I do know that the labor to polish and mount a diamond alone accounts for about about 70% of its cost. I also know that gem mining is a fun family activity!

typically the most common types that most buy actually loose value....try getting back what you payed for them....and see what I mean.

But interesting enough, in the 1300's in Africa and he was black....was the richest man the world has ever had, even up until now.
He enslaved all his people(black people) and had them work the gold mines, and built a fortune that was/is the richest ever.
And everyday he would behead one of them to set the tone...that you better not even, look at me the wrong way..
I just learned about him and found it interesting, especially considering all the talk about slavery and all that...plus your point.

Diamonds are not that rare.... its just the amount let out to the public is regulated to not flood the market lowering their value. But the higher karat, nearly flawless diamonds are more rare and what investors invest their money in when it comes to diamonds.
