Really? Care to elaborate?

As I mentioned before, Quincy Jones, who is 88 yrs old, NEVER learned to drive. Barbra Walters, who is 85 yrs old never learned to drive either and both of them seems to have made it through life just fine.

So exactly what "red flag" is up when a person of a certain age doesn't drive?

DJ, Barbara Walters lived in NY. There are taxi, car service, limos, and even the subway. She wouldn't need a car.

Wasn't the point. The point is, somehow bumblebee7 seems to think that there is something inherently WRONG with a person who doesn't drive by a particular age. The reason I mentioned Jones and Walters is to demonstrate that one can be higly successful and happy without EVER having driven.

People in America are too damn superficial and selfish. That is WHY people have a difficult time finding appropriate mates, which is why there are so many online dating sites, and why the sanctity of marriage is a JOKE in this country, with at least 50% of all marriages ending in divorce.

It's a little off putting if he does not drive or have a car. I like to relax and be the passenger at times.
However if you like someone and are getting to know them having a vehicle should have no bearing on it at all.....unless you live way out in the boonies and have to always go to him.

Agreed, except there is a certain percentage of people across all countries who are superficial. So this trait is not inherent to the US per se, or does it stand out here compared to other countries. Human beings are quite similar, on aggregate that is. Anyhow, great points Xman!

In my area the busses are few and far between. I'm not a f**king taxi, and I don't expect to be shuttled around either. He should be able to get himself from point A to point B without having to hitch rides. I'm not a teenager anymore and I don't intend on dating one.

OP i can't imagine it having any thing to do with a car. You might tell you're self that. But you say you drive a bus think about all the people that ride your bus that have a date or have hubby/wife or kids it is not the car might need to take a look at your self. are you what you think you would want to date if you were the kind of guy you are looking for

I make pretty good money..I work damn hard for that money I own a car..frankly I expect a man who wants to date me to also have a car. This means he isn't reliant on me or public transportation to get him around. If im doing well financially why do I want to deal with someone who cant even afford a car?

Now if a man has a situation that do to a handicap he can't drive that's different. .but if he has a dead end job making shit, can't afford a car that's not acceptable to me..Im 41, I date men in my age group..if by 40 a man is still flipping burgers at McDonalds and riding the city bus...pretty sure we aren't going out...

I live in a major metropolitan city with a pretty reliable public transportation system. I don't drive not because I don't want to but because I have a medical condition that prevents me from getting a license.

I have no issues whatsoever with taking the bus, subway, or a commuter rail train to meet my date. My problem is that there are alot of pampered princesses in this city who feel riding public transportation is beneath them.

I've never lived in a metropolitan area with reliable public transportation. a car really is a necessity.

as someone said earlier, not having a car is a RED FLAG. just that, a red flag. not saying DO NOT DATE. just figure out why this person doesn't have a car.

it isn't so much the fact they don't have a car, as why they don't have a car.

medical reasons are permissible.

got is car impounded for outstanding tickets, or DUIs, or got his car repo'd because he failed to make payments, or works a LOW end job (let's face it, even at 26 and older, it's not that hard to save up to get a $2000 car, especially when in the areas I have lived, you really needed a car just to get from where you lived, to the grocery store, to work, and home).

NOW, my best and dearest guy friend does not have a car. his old car finally gave up the ghost. he is a bartender at a ritzy bar and makes good money, lives in a loft apartment over the bar, and pitches in on gas money to his roommate to drive him to the grocery store once a week, otherwise he walks places. he's one of the lucky few that get by without a car. he could afford one, but he doesn't need one, and his reasoning for not having one, isn't due to being a skeezy good for nothing guy.

10k miles won't be likely an issue to any most reliable Japanese vehicles period (same as 80k). I put over 1 million miles in 17 years on all of my past and present cars and only had 3 repairs that ran me under 1k usd in total.

district manager, I travel between stores, and my bf is 500 miles away

with four cars in the past 6 years, I've logged 400,000 miles approximately.

each car had 100k miles on it to start with approximately. and besides tires and oil changes, I've only had $2000 in repairs (a clutch and a radiator were the big things, a few small sensors that I replaced myself) lexus, Honda, Pontiac, and chevrolet

I typically buy them brand new and then put 250k in 5 years before changing and repeating the whole cycle all over again.

so far, I've had good luck finding used cars with tons of maintenance/new parts on them.

the Honda, a 1992, had over $1500 in bolt on parts on the engine, as well as a rebuilt engine and new clutch, as well as new brakes and a new set of tires on it, when I bought it at 135k (since I've put 100k on it, with just a set of tires and oil changes, all while getting 40ish mpg)

not bad for a $2000 car ... it doesn't owe me nothing now.

the way I'm going, 80k miles this year, 65k miles last year, and 60k the year prior, I wouldn't be sure I could make 5 years on a new car, I've logged 200k in three years already, and that'd be a LOT of depreciation.

so long as I can keep having good luck with finding awesome used cars, i'll keep that up

Depreciation does not worry me, but the reliability aspect does. When i buy it, i wanna make sure it looks great and does not go to the shop for any repairs. Tire, timing belt, oil changes (or transmission fluid replacements) do not count as repairs since you have to do all that as part of your regular maintenance.

but, you with your new car, and me with my used and then abused cars, have spent the same in "repairs" - excluding maintenance

the sad thing is, with my job being the automotive industry, it's almost laughable that I get more "respect" in driving an older, maintained car, than I do driving my newer nice car

The 1997 Toyota Camry I picked up last December for $1200 has 283k on it and drives great. Engine starts right up even after a week sitting at the terminal. Doesn't use any oil or coolant from what I can tell. Aside from a tricky drivers window regulator (have to use your hands to get it to fully close) and a stuck rear seat belt retractor, all the power locks/windows/cruise control/hvac work great.

The 97 Saturn I had before it was going to need a new cylinder head and drive belt tensioner pully just for starters and had less than half the miles.

That is true. It boils down to a personal preference of whether or not you prefer new or older vehicles. Either choice is reasonable.

That's what I am talking about! Great quality! Japanese vehicles kick butt and Toyota rocks even more!

my Pontiac is actually surprising me. a rare engine/transmission combo, and so far has been super reliable. none of the little nickel and dime crap everyone else experiences. maybe I just have a good car omen or something.

Any vehicle can be reliable, but the probability that say your average Toyota/Honda/Scion/Suburu/Lexus/Acura/Mazda will break is likely a lot less than the respective probability of an average Pontiac. But since you understand cars, you likely can pick your used vehicles a lot better than some average consumer out there can. Hence, your picks might be more reliable due to your selection process.

no doubt I believe that to be a major factor in my luck with cars.

but on your list of "reliable" ones - from new for sure, but as used - a lot of scions get abuse, a lot of subarus are not properly maintained, same with mazdas. sadly.

I heard a rumor we get company cars sometime this year. how absolutely divine that will be, I don't care what the car is, really.

although, I'm a bit nervous, I only owned one automatic, and did not drive it because I was uncomfortable with it, I've only ever driven manuals.

I think with the Camry, Toyota overengineered them. That 2.2L 4 cylinder S series engine had been in production since 1980 so they pretty much worked out the kinks by 1997.

my 1997 lexus had the 3.0 ... and that's a solid engine platform, as is the Honda/Toyota 1.5L
