This was my approach.
"Sometimes people get confused or scared and make the wrong choices. God ALWAYS provides and He knows I have the love of two people for you and we will both be okay with just each other for a while. Someone will be thrilled to fall in love with both of us and we'll all make even more happiness together as a family."
This won't stop the question, it will be rephrased a thousand times. Don't speak badly of her. Children make their own choices. Whatever you do, don't lie! Kids can smell that a mile away and won't trust anyone that lies-no matter how good their intentions may be.

With my oldest, his father wasn't in his life at all until he was almost 16. I told him that his father loved him, but that we couldn't get along and that wasn't good for my son. I also told him that his father knew that I would take care of him.

Tell them the truth, that even though it hurts, they are not responsible for what their mother did. And show them lots of love and attention...cause they'll need it. I know mine did when their mom walked out.

I've asked myself this over and over. He walked out with no warning over 3 years ago, I was at work and he didn't show up to pick our daughter up from preschool. She's asked once where he is and I told her the truth "I have no idea". I'm not sure what to say if she asks why, I don't want to tell her the truth.

Sometimes people get to a point where they aren't making the best decisions for different reasons. I know your mom loves you she just isn't making the best decisions right now. Just pray for her and know that God will work everything out for the best.

That's what I told my kids. Now their mom is back in their lives and it didn't cause any problems. Do not bad mouth their mother. It will come back to bite you

Your response should be truthful and what you say depends on the kids age. When my son asks any question, I answered in an age appropriate manner. When he asked about his dad, I told him that his father loved him, but that people had different ideas about love and not everybody loved the same.

It was good enough for him when he was 6-years-old. He is now 16 and last time I talked to him about his father, I told him the his father didn't know how to be a dad. We talked for a while and I think he understood what I was trying to say without me coming out and saying it. Although his father is a piece of crap, I would never tell him that. It is something he will figure out in time.

Whatever you say, make sure it is the truth. You never want the child to come back to you and confront you with a lie.

Hope that helps.

Blame it on illness. I have an adopted daughter and she asks why her mom left her. I tell her she is the best daughter that anyone could have. That there is nothing in this world that she could have done to make her mommy leave. So her mommy must have and illness or something wrong with with her that we can't understand. Not a single thing I said is a lie. Because there was obviously some wrong with her mom that she could not care for her children.

Never speak badly about the other parent/s. Never. There is no reason to crush a child's feelings or memories. Allow them to have their pleasant memories.

I used to take her and her brother to visits with their mom. So the visit near her birthday my daughter was excited. She had all her little dreams that her mom would do something special for her birthday. She didn't show. And never showed again. I was left with a completely crushed 5 year old who loved her mom with all her heart in spite of her mom's many flaws. I still til this day don't know how I found the strength to be strong and get her through that. She is truly the best daughter that anyone could ever have. I have never met a person who tried so hard to do their best. She did not deserve how her mother treated her. I will spend all of my life making sure she is treated the way she deserves.

Always take the high road. In the end you will be glad you did.
