To me...i think it is a sham because i believe that you don't need this day
...unless it is an anniversary on that day....to show your love one your appreciation.....hell, you should do that like the end of the week or something...what do you think?

I believe in date nights and treating the one you are with, doing special things for them on a regular basis. Valentine's Day is not needed for those things.

Although, in my entire existence I've only had a bf over Valentine's Day like, three times. So maybe I'd feel differently if I had more experience. haha

It's still special when dating.

I got bored with it while married, but that had more to do with the marriage.

I see nothing wrong with taking this day and turning it into a day that has meaning for both of you and celebrating it the way you choose...

Agreed.
I don't need a designated day to show her I love her. I do that everyday. I realize some do...but I'm not that guy.
I HATE Valentines Day. Its cold and usually rainy (here) and just an ugly gloomy day to 'express ones ardour'.

I liked it in elementary school because Lisa Mellinger, Jane Courtney and Tracy Donahue usually outdid themselves for my affections.

Valentines day my second son was born csection. I picked the day. My dr had told me for 9 months I was having a girl. None of the sonagrams could tell so I picked valentines day since I was a repeat section. I had little dresses all hanging by the baby bed. He was our second son to be born. So valentines day is special to me for that reason. Out of my 3 sons he is the one closest to me. Valentines day is a perfect day to give little things to parents, kids, grandkids, grandparent's, it's not just for significant others.

I think Valentine's Day is a nice thing. But a person shouldn't show their SO they care about them just on that day or buy something special just on that day. They should be showing they care all throughout the year.

No, it's the anniversary of love and of lovers, not to show appreciation as such.
As if you weren't supposed to show it the rest of the time.

regardless of whether you think it is commercially driven.. or not.

At work several women will get flowers delivered some will get cookie bouquets, others candy. I wonder if they tell their husbands to do it? We work in a secure unmarked building for security. So the husbands had to be told the address. I hate the display of competition I see between the women. Especially when 364 days a year I hear how they want to get a divorce. It's all for show to the other women. I like to buy little things and give to the widows at work.

Not content with Valentine's day and the consumerism it created? They also introduced Sweetest Day to the area, consumerism at it's finest?

Like most holidays, it seems my society associates celebrating with spending money to gratify desires. What should be about appreciating the people you love and taking time to celebrate an aspect of your life together becomes an obligation to gratify the superficial materialistic cravings of others.

The problem with valentine's day is that it makes the "have nots" feel bad about not having a valentine, or not having enough money to afford a gift that appropriately corresponds with the appreciation you feel for your partner. That's why we should make it a day to appreciate the people in your life by writing a message to illustrate all the things that you appreciate about those closest to you. It can still be just as romantic for couples while not being so focused on romantic love. This way, everyone is happy, and maybe we won't have as many desperate lonely people scrambling to find a date by valentine's day!
