Have you ever been given the advise to kill yourself by VA doctors? Twice it has happened to me. Now I may be a squeaky wheel, but I think this is a little over the top. One Doc offered to give me a prescription of a strong penicillin right after discussing how it would kill me. Another doctor suggested a .45 to the head, for "..fixing all your problems."

This really upset me and I hope you don't mind me stepping where I don't belong.
Report the incompetent doctor, he should not be practicing! I can't imagine how many other veterans and family he is ill-advising. I just want to smack the crap out of anyone, especially people of who are suppose to be helping, that don't value life.

Im lucky, I don't use the VA.I have my Medicare and retiree insurance benefits from my union. My only VA experience happened not long after I ETS'ed. I went to the VA with a urinary/kidney infection. The doctor said to me "its probably clap, all you guys coming back from Vietnam have it". I got up and left and haven't been back. As a medic I knew I didn't have some venereal infection-as a doctor he should have. I hope its gotten better!

Have You received your "Veterans Choice" Card? You seem to be far enough away from the clinic to be eligible. It is Temporary, So check in to get it. Then pick your "Civilian" doctor. He/She will have access to your records for care!!

Just tried talking to Laquishia about my "Choice Card". Even though I haven't received any care at the VA, although I requested it, I am not eligible.

I got my choice card, closest VA hospital to me is 90 miles.

I have been using the VA since 1976 and have a good DR. and nurses here in MN. When I lived in IL. they were bad. All depends on the area you are in.

Op I am a bit confused, In your original post, you said your VA Docs were giving you certain advice and then here you say "Even though I haven't received any care at the VA, although I requested it, I am not eligible."

But if you are concerned with what VA Dr's are telling you, all Hospital Director's have an open door policy, and based on the seriousnes of your claims, that is where you need to go.

But in today's atmosphere, especially since the Arizona Debacle. The Medical facilities are all under new scrutiny, In the last 2 years the CBOC I worked at was inspected no less than 4 times. They constantly sent out emails on the "Whistle Blower" Policy. And internally encouraged employees to come forward with any ethical issues they had.

If the advice to kill yourself, given by a VA Doc is true and you do not trust the VA, then go to the Media, they are like Sharks for this kinda thing.

I also get all my care at this CBOC, thanks to the Agent Orange gift, that keeps on giving, and I am 100% SATISFIED with my care!!!

Wow Dude, I just find this really hard to believe, and that is just my persoanl opinion.

Have a Soft Day

I have had two doctors that were bad. I did not report them and several years later both lost their licenses to practice and prison time. (one committed suicide). Had I reported them maybe they would not have harmed others. Sometimes, you may not get the satisfaction but do it to protect others down the line.
If you report him and someone else does, it is no longer your word against his.

I just know there are official places to report malpractice, misconduct, and complaints for civilian doctors, dentist, etc. there must be one for the VA as well. Why should someone who practices at a VA be allowed to preform at a lower or inadequate level?

btw~ chances are this doctor has said this to others as well. They are people like everyone else and can have meltdowns or whatever it is that makes them no longer practice their Hippocratic oath. I would think and hope the review board would take your concerns seriously.

Above all, I must not play at God."

Two "doctors." It really doesn't matter, I'm pretty healthy. I just feel bad for the vet with necropsy of the lower leg sitting next to me, that guy should of had AN AMPUTATION 6 MONTHS AGO.

I just got back from my local VA clinic for my annual check up. I got a copy of my lab results. Got my weight, temp and BP checked. Did not see a doctor though. He HAD a good poker hand and couldn't see me at the appointed time. The taxi driver was charging me 40/hr, so I had to leave without speaking to his greatness.

Maybe the staff at some VA clinics actually work. I really am just a whiner, I just remembered the great heating pad they gave me 4 years ago. Agent Orange is a big deal, so big, the VA ignored it for more than 25 years hoping all who were exposed, died. I'm glad you're hangin' tough, but I doubt the VA is responsible for your longevity. I suspect it is more to do with an inner strength.

yes I have. However, if the VA can make you an appointment in 30 days or less, then he has to go back to the VA.

Read closely The 30 days has some exemptions.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Choice Card Program is a new, temporary benefit that will begin to cover non-VA care for eligible veterans already enrolled in VA health care. Veterans are eligible for Choice Card benefits if any of the following conditions apply: (1) they were told by their local VA medical facility that they need to wait more than 30 days from their preferred appointment date or the date medically determined by their physician; (2) their current residence is more than 40 miles to the closest VA health care facility; or (3) they face significant travel hardships to get to the nearest VA health care facility. For more information on the Choice Card Program, call 866-606-8198 or contact your county veterans service officer

Too bad we just can't have a unit medic available. Those guys were the best except for "Getting Rodded", they could take care of everything but a heart bypass.

I worked at a CBOC, and the VA went to 25 Vets (under the original program) that had appointments 60-120 days out, in a specific specialty clinic, the 1st problem was that in this area of medicine, the "Farm" out wait time was 90-120 days out...hmmmm....That put the ball in the VA's court to "find" an outsourced Doc" The Va did not have the resources to Outsource 25 Vets more or less 100's.

That is when they fine tuned this program and put it in the Vet's Court. The Va will not "look" for a Doc for you, now you look for your own.

But if you cannot get an appointment with your Primary or a Specialty Clinic within 30 days, of your "Desire" Date. Now keep in mind, this program applies mainly to "first" time appointments, especially in Specialty clincs, follow ups are mainly set up in 30-60-90 day increments. This is where the above program applies.

The Clerk's in the VA CBOC's are "Required" to ask you, when scheduling an appoitment, What Your "Desire Date" is. At Times, In Specialty Clinics Clerks will just "tell" when the next appt is, If they don't ask "what is you Desire Date" , "You" just say this is my "Desire Date". If you are standing in front of a Clerk and it is July 7th you can say your Desire Date is July 8th. The Desire Date is whatever date you feel like you need to be seen. And they are required to look for an appointment within 30 days from that Desired Date.

Small word game but huge impact on your health care. If they cannot get you in within 30 days of your desire date, and this will be documented, then you use the above program.

Have a Soft Day

You may be missing a good thing Ken, Dr Boone in the Kenai Clinic is great...Have nothing but complements for him Only go on an as needed basis because my main residence is in Florida, but they treat me great even when the massive Summer crowd is in town.

i've had the best employer provided benefits that money can buy throughout my career. many great doctors who cared. big difference i see with the va doctors that treat me is that they all seem more relaxed, less rushed with their time and more likely to take whatever time i need from them to answer questions. have to think that it has a lot to do with no worries over things like malpractice, running a private business and other things that can divert his attention away from my care. va drs. have virtually unlimited say in how i'll be cared for. they cannot be sued and know exactly what they'll be paid each month. there may be a thought that they need to get this visit moved along but not so he can squeeze out that next c note from the patient behind me but because there is another vet in need. sure, any good dr will feel that way but it's tough not to see that the more patients they can see the better their family eats that month. the more i think on it the more i feel that the va environment may be the best when it comes to promoting dr-patient care.

So, I'm moving from the Erie, Pa area to Connecticut to outfit a sailboat to live on. I've been planning for this for 6 months. I'm closing on my home in 2 weeks. Last detail. Transfer to New Haven, CT VA hospital. I've talked to the right people, shared my name and last four more times than can be counted. I got a letter Saturday. I have been assigned a new doctor! Hooray!!!!!

In Erie, Pa VA.

Well that place sounds messed up. Over where I live they most certainly don't do that. Although I do see a lot of Vets wanting to stop living. Of course I work in the Psych Unit. Its kinda sad really. I see a lot of the Vets from Vietnam era that just couldn't get themselves back together. And now I am seeing some that are as young as 21 that have come back from Iraq and Afghanistan.

New Haven, CT is better. They're trying extra hard to help. The clerks still suck though.
