Your questions are just what we are all asking??

Apparently you choose a local doctor to have access to your medical records.

From there it gets fuzzy. ??This card does not mean automatic payment, you must still be pre authorized for care outside the clinic.??

So if you want a hometown doctor, ??each and every time you must call the clinic first and see if they can get you in????

If they cannot they will give you an authorization number.

That's only my guessing from what the letter said.

Thank you. I will make sure I get authorization first. I don't need any medical bills.

I wonder if anyone from Omaha, NE could recommend a doctor. I have to wait till Monday to call.

If I read correctly, you have to get authorization before going to a non-VA facility. Seriously? In an emergency?

Emergencies are the exception. It says as soon as possible after the emergency you must notify the VA hospital. They will authorize emergency care!

And if you read the other poster, when you call "In Pain" and need to see a doctor "Tomorrow." They can authorize a civilian doctor's care.

I've heard horror stories about Veterans trying to collect. They called in advance and were transferred over to the VA in west Los Angeles. I guess I'll suffer till I can get myself over to VA Emergency.

When I call Erie, Pa, I get Akron, OH. They never have any answers there either.

The VA will now calculate the 40 mile rule by using google maps or other driving software.
The distance now will be "Driven" Miles. (Choice Card)

They will determine you are more than 40 miles away. They will determine you cannot get an appointment within 30 days. Then they will deny you. Open envelope, call number, throw in trash.

I never had a problem getting an appointment. I know a guy 20 miles from me that is always complaining he can't get anywhere with the VA. He spent 3 years in the Army, BUT never left the states. He has tried claiming all kinds of things wrong with him.
I have used the local hospital for over 10 years with no problem, VA told me to use local hospital. VA has always picked up the bill. Closest VA hospital to me is 90 miles away. They do go by what is on your DD214 and medical records from time you spent in service.

I'm 100% service connected. The best departments are dentistry and eye care. The only problem is you have to be 100% service connected to be seen. The rest of the VA system is based on self promotion. They need certain statistics to receive bonuses. That is all they care about. They will leave you in a room for hours alone if you let them, then they will credit themselves for "Helping Veterans."

1irving seems to me you have some personal issues with the VA. Like I have stated before I have no problem with the VA. In fact they have been better than the civilian Drs. that I have seen. I have had over 26 surgeries now though the VA, and more to come. I can see a Dr. within a few hrs. by calling them. I remind you the closest hospital to me is 90 miles away. The main hospital for this area is 130 miles away. If you have such issues with the VA the write or send a e-mail to the director of the VA, stating what your problems have been with the VA in your area. I know now you will say it doesn't do any good. I am done with this pity cry about the VA.

My issues with the VA are documented and real. I'm not going into details here AGAIN. My business with the ERIE VA is true and is shared by many. The care givers, nurses, technicians are not the issue, it is the ADMINISTATORS. The administrators only care about THEMSELVES. When they get caught, they build. They build surgeries that are never used, they build parking garages that are never used, they build clinics for people to wait in without service. I'm glad you have great service in Minnesota. I had to have 13 cysts removed in my garage by a customer who happens to be an ear-nose-throat surgeon, WITHOUT a local. I'm still on the list to have both shoulders replaced after 7 years. It is a game and they will continue to win until leadership is shown by our elected members of congress. They just cannot be fired, AND they know it!

Consider this: What would motivate a health care worker to work for the VA? No malpractice insurance needed? Don't have to hire 3 clerks to do billing? GPA upon graduation an issue?

The health care card was a great idea and it would save money for the taxpayers. But it was a placebo, never meant to be used, except by a few connected individuals.

There are quite a few Veterans who have experienced sub-standard care. CNN has written an article recently about fudging "wait times" for Veterans.

Bill Maher's "Daily Show" hilariously explains my choice card.
(Looking for the link). Even though my VA is more than 40 miles away, then I call the number on the card to set up my appointment with an approved provider. Ok now that is 40 miles "as the crow flies". LoL I need a zip line alright like Bill Maher said.
