Ran across this verse earlier today, in regard to some re search I was doing about Prophecy fulfilled.
But it never left me, and I have been contemplating it all day.
Matthew 23:29-38Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
29 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,
30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;
32 and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.
There are those that claim, because they keep specific laws, that they and their group alone will be saved one day, while the rest of us will be "doomed " and hated by God. But verse 30, really stands out. I first read it and thought, good thing I believe I only come to Christ by his Grace. After all, he even forgave the ones who crucified him.
But some refuse to accept, that. And insist, it is their own acts, that makes them acceptable to God, by laws kept.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary
23:13-33 The scribes and Pharisees were enemies to the gospel of Christ, and therefore to the salvation of the souls of men. It is bad to keep away from Christ ourselves, but worse also to keep others from him. Yet it is no new thing for the show and form of godliness to be made a cloak to the greatest enormities. But dissembled piety will be reckoned double iniquity. They were very busy to turn souls to be of their party. Not for the glory of God and the good of souls, but that they might have the credit and advantage of making converts. Gain being their godliness, by a thousand devices they made religion give way to their worldly interests. They were very strict and precise in smaller matters of the law, but careless and loose in weightier matters. It is not the scrupling a little sin that Christ here reproves; if it be a sin, though but a gnat, it must be strained out; but the doing that, and then swallowing a camel, or, committing a greater sin. While they would seem to be godly, they were neither sober nor righteous. We are really, what we are inwardly. Outward motives may keep the outside clean, while the inside is filthy; but if the heart and spirit be made new, there will be newness of life; here we must begin with ourselves. The righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees was like the ornaments of a grave, or dressing up a dead body, only for show. The deceitfulness of sinners' hearts appears in that they go down the streams of the sins of their own day, while they fancy that they should have opposed the sins of former days. We sometimes think, if we had lived when Christ was upon earth, that we should not have despised and rejected him, as men then did; yet Christ in his Spirit, in his word, in his ministers, is still no better treated. And it is just with God to give those up to their hearts' lusts, who obstinately persist in gratifying them. Christ gives men their true characters
biblehub.com/matthew/23-30.htm
Who knows what one would have done, if they lived back then, and were at the execution of Jesus. Would we have helped him, or helped put the nails in him? Would we have helped him carry his Cross, or would we have jeered him?
I know, what I am, and what Jesus saved me from. It is not at all, by my actions, that I am saved, Rather it is by the authority of what Jesus told the thief next to him, and his words, "Father forgive them" to those murduring him, that I am saved. I simply accept, his gift of Grace.
What would my role have been at the Cross? Well, he was on it, because of my sin. So, yea, I helped put the nails in. And he forgave me, way back then for it. Thank you Lord.
So, what would you have done? Are you saved by your righteousness? By your following the right law?
Or by him, when he told us he forgives us?
Anyway, I love Matthew Henrys explanation. Do others here appreciate it as well?

Good question - I would say not.
(Luke 23:42 KJV) And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
(Luke 23:43 KJV) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Interestingly Jesus stated the thief would be with him in paradise while the SDA "church" claims he has to go through the "Investigative Judgment"...

The original had no comma.
The comma was injected where they (KJV) thought it should go.
I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
or
I say unto there To day, shalt thou be with me in paradise.
John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
Jesus said in Luke, today you shalt thou be with me in paradise but in John, He said He had not yet ascended to the Father after His resurrection.

Many of us would have. Maybe if we in that time, we would have been influenced by any factors surrounding the scene. Remember, even Peter who walked with Him denied Him under pressure. The crowd in the courtyard, shouted "crucify Him", and as He was on His way to Calvary with the Cross, there were enough shouting from the crowd that cheered th mobsters to continue and finish their acts.
Thank God that we were born in this time to be recipients of the gospel and not participants who crucified Him in one way or another.

Here from a literal translation:
Luke 23:42-43Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
42 and he said to Jesus, `Remember me, lord, when thou mayest come in thy reign;'

Now, here is what the saved by works advocate Ellie White claims, taken from the White estate site :
"Peter's fall was not instantaneous, but gradual. Self-confidence led him to the belief that he was saved, and step after step was taken in the downward path, until he could deny his Master. Never can we safely put confidence in self or feel, this side of heaven, that we are secure against temptation. Those who accept the Saviour, however sincere their conversion, should never be taught to say or to feel that they are saved. This is misleading. Everyone should be taught to cherish hope and faith; but even when we give ourselves to Christ and know that He accepts us, we are not beyond the reach of temptation. God's Word declares, 'Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried' (Dan. 12:10). Only he who endures the trial will receive the crown of life (James 1:12)" (Christ's Object Lessons, p. 155, emphasis supplied).

And this is what Scripture tells us :
1 John 5:13 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
13 These things I did write to you who are believing in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that life ye have age-during, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God.
- that by belief , we do know and have assurance.
Romans 4:3 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
3 for what doth the writing say? `And Abraham did believe God, and it was reckoned to him -- to righteousness;'
- that simply by belief , was Abraham saved, no works added to that.
Romans 5:15 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
15 But, not as the offence so also [is] the free gift; for if by the offence of the one the many did die, much more did the grace of God, and the free gift in grace of the one man Jesus Christ, abound to the many;
- that it iis a "free gift" in Grace, no works added to this .
Romans 6:23 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
23 for the wages of the sin [is] death, and the gift of God [is] life age-during in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
18 having known that, not with corruptible things -- silver or gold -- were ye redeemed from your foolish behaviour delivered by fathers,
19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and unspotted -- Christ's --
- that we were 'redeemed" , by the blood of Christ, again, no works can do that.
No, "enduring " to the end, no trials by an imaginary "Investigative Judgement", we believe, and we are saved.
Now, what would Jesus tell those, who claim to be righteous , from their own works and law keeping? We know, because there were those when he was here, that also claimed that they were. Just like some groups do today, who claim only they will be saved, and every one else is condemned.
Jump around all you want, brag how good you are, because you keep one of the many laws, and how God will save you because of your works. Claim that by your law keeping, you would not have nailed Jesus to the Cross. That you have Salvation, because you have no sin.
Want to emphasize that. If you believe you are saved, by your rightousness , then you are claiming, you have no sin.
Well this is what Jesus told the Pharisees and self proclaimed goody two shoes .
Again, back to the scripture, in the opening post :
Matthew 23:29-38Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
29 `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,
30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;
32 and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.

Atonement
by Ellen White
When Christ, the Mediator, burst the bands of the tomb, and ascended on high to minister for man, He first entered the holy place where, by virtue of His own sacrifice, He made an offering for the sins of men. With intercession and pleadings He presented before God the prayers and repentance and faith of His people, purified by the incense of His own merits. He next entered the Most Holy Place, to make an atonement for the sins of the people, and to cleanse the sanctuary. His work as high priest completes the divine plan of redemption by making the final atonement for sin. 10MR 157
Now Christ is in the heavenly sanctuary. And what is He doing? Making atonement for us, cleansing the sanctuary from the sins of the people. Then we must enter by faith into the sanctuary with Him, we must commence the work in the sanctuary of our souls. We are to cleanse ourselves from all defilement. We must "cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." Satan will come and tempt you and you will give way to his temptations. What then? Why, come and humble your hearts in confession, and by faith grasp the arm of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary. Believe that Christ will take your confession and hold up His hands before the Father--hands that have been bruised and wounded in our behalf-- and He will make an atonement for all who will come with confession. What if you cannot understand about this matter? He says, "He that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins" (2 Peter 1:19). 1888 0127
Important truths concerning the atonement may be learned from the typical service. A substitute was accepted in the sinner's stead; but the sin was not cancelled by the blood of the victim. A means was thus provided by which it was transferred to the sanctuary. By the offering of blood, the sinner acknowledged the authority of the law, confessed his guilt in transgression, and expressed his desire for pardon through faith in a Redeemer to come; but he was not yet entirely released from the condemnation of the law. On the day of atonement the high priest, having taken an offering from the congregation, went into the most holy place with the blood of this general offering, and sprinkled it upon the mercy-seat, directly over the law, to make satisfaction for its claims. Then, in his character of mediator, he took the sins upon himself, and bore them from the sanctuary. Placing his hands upon the head of the scape-goat, he confessed over him all these sins, thus in figure transferring them from himself to the goat. The goat then bore them away, and they were regarded as forever separated from the people. 4SP 265
The great plan of redemption, as revealed in the closing work of these last days, should receive close examination. The scenes connected with the sanctuary above should make such an impression upon the minds and hearts of all that they may be able to impress others. All need to become more intelligent in regard to the work of the atonement, which is going on in the sanctuary above. When this grand truth is seen and understood, those who hold it will work in harmony with Christ to prepare a people to stand in the great day of God, and their efforts will be successful. By study, contemplation, and prayer God's people will be elevated above common, earthly thoughts and feelings, and will be brought into harmony with Christ and His great work of cleansing the sanctuary above from the sins of the people. Their faith will go with Him into the sanctuary, and the worshipers on earth will be carefully reviewing their lives and comparing their characters with the great standard of righteousness. They will see their own defects; they will also see that they must have the aid of the Spirit of God if they would become qualified for the great and solemn work for this time which is laid upon God's ambassadors. 5T 575

The above Heresey explains SDA theology, concerning the romoval of sin. And they have poor Jesus, working his butt off up there, trying to keep up with all our sin.
Like the Priests back in the temple day, sacrificing animals every day, to keep up with all the new sin.
They insist, that Jesus had to enter the "mercy seat", at least twice, and probably more.
But this word "atonement", does not mean that sins are taken away. All it means, is that they are "covered". The blood of sheep and Goats, never took away sin.
Hebrews 10:4 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
4 for it is impossible for blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
So, we have these Ellie White disciples, insisting, the Cross was not enough. That his blood being shed, was no different than the blood of goats and sheep. All, Christs blood did, was to "cover" the sin, not take it away.
But was his blood, just a replacement for that of Sheep and Goats? Think about it, if what these guys claim is true, then he did not save man kind, but rather, sheep and goats!
Does Jesus, need to keep re entering the mercy seat? Does every new sin, once again, require a new atonement/ payment?
Lets look at what the Bible says, and compare it to the ramblings of the false Prophet Ellie White.
Hebrews 9:12 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
12 neither through blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, did enter in once into the holy places, age-during redemption having obtained;
Pretty clear, he had to enter only ONCE,redemption, was complete. Mission, already accomplished !
Yes, Jesus had to apply his blood to "heaven":
John 20:17 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
17 Jesus saith to her, `Be not touching me, for I have not yet ascended unto my Father; and be going on to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God, and to your God.'
But not over and over again. His blood is not like Goats and Sheeps. Once applied, its good, guaranteed by God with an eternal life warranty. And we are assured of that, right now.
1 Peter 1:18-19 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
18 having known that, not with corruptible things -- silver or gold -- were ye redeemed from your foolish behaviour delivered by fathers,
19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and unspotted -- Christ's --
Amen, thank you, Lord.

Exactly - he could not say "with me thou shalt be in the paradise tomorrow" because his body was in the tomb.
We don't actually know where Christ was after his death while in the tomb - his body was there but where was his "spirit/soul". I don't believe scripture tells us.

The SDA "church" claims Jesus entered twice into the Most Holy Place, once at His ascension, and once again in 1844 at the beginning of the atypical Day of Atonement.
The bible states he entered once:
(Heb 9:12 KJV) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
(Heb 10:12 KJV) But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
No Investigative Judgment is found is scripture not even revelation:
(Rev 14:6 KJV) And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
(Rev 14:7 KJV) Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
The above statement by John tallies exactly with what Peter, Paul and James wrote about the coming judgment in 70 AD:
Peter is placing the judgement of the living and the dead in his time the 1st century AD not into our future from the context in the verse a little later:
1 Pet 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
Peter is telling his readers that the judgment is imminent because the "end of all things is at hand".
We have further proof in Peter that the "time is come":
1 Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
So Peter in his epistle is stating that the appointed time for judgment had come.
Paul also states the judgment is "about to be" - when we compare what the KJV translates and what a more literal translation such as Young's says:
(Acts 17:31 KJV) Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Acts 17:31 (Young's) because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.
Acts 24:15 KJV) And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
Acts 24:15 (Young's) having hope toward God, which they themselves also wait for, that there is about to be a rising again of the dead, both of righteous and unrighteous
As can be seen from the above the KJV lends to a futuristic view of the above verses, whereas Young's Literal gives an imminence to these events that the KJV lacks and thus leads to a fawlty understanding and timing of the judgment of the living and the dead.
(James 5:9 KJV) Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
So we have Peter, Paul and James all saying that the judgment of the living and the dead is "imminent" and "about to be".

My one Grand Dad was gassed in the 1st war. At first they thought he was worse off than he really was, and they told him he might not last 6 months.
Anyway, he lived to be 99. But all through his life, when asked his age, he would tell them, and then add I only have 6 more months to live. He thought that was funny.
These guys here, remind me of him. Soon, soon, soon, soon!!!
But then again, claiming you are a remnant church, and none of them even existed before the 1800`s? Kinda shows a poor concept of mathematics, you know?

Just thought of something.
No wonder it is taking so long.
6 billion and more on the earth today, most of whom break one of the very many Sabbath laws. And it all has to be recorded, in the office of the offical Investigative Judgement.
Think of the back log, they must have ! Wow, closed for Saturdays so they can observe the Sabbath, but then, they have to try and make up and get all those sins written down the next day.
Btecha they are so behind, they have to get Ellie White to help out, maybe that being who dictated the Urantia book?
She is a Prophet after all, kinda like Santa Clause. Special gifts and powers, "she knows if you are sleeping, she knows when your awake, she knows if youve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sakes "!
Mmmm also a good reason to the mystery of why the Universe is still exapanding. All those sins, need to be writtn down and stored, now that is one heck of a lot of paper !They need more room for it all.

Lol - population estimate for around the 1800's was 1000 million - so assuming each person spends a day on "trial" for crimes against theo-anity:
1000,000,000 divided by 365 = 2,738,726 years..
Jesus is coming back in 2.5 million years give or take an SDA..
But using the day/year principle 2,738,726 "days" /365 = 7506 years - that would definitely fit "soon" and "at hand" better than 2.5 million years...

"I tell you in solemn truth," replied Jesus, "that this very day you shall be with me in Paradise."
World English Bible
Jesus said to him, "Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
Young's Literal Translation
and Jesus said to him, 'Verily I say to thee, To-day with me thou shalt be in the paradise.'
Now, what does their Translation, the "Clear Word Bible , say?
CWB - "Jesus turned His head toward him and said, 'I promise you today, when I return with the glory of my Father, I'll take you home with me to paradise.'"
I checked this verse out in Strongs :

Check where the comma is, and then where the CWB has it.
Holy Sabbath Batman, we have to protect our soul sleep and judgement doctrines, going to have to change that, eh?
Lots of other changes they have made as well, I suggest every one be carefull and double check what they post, when they quote scripture.
There are dozens of other examples, where they have done this as well. Seems, they learned well from their JW and Mormon Cousins.

If Jesus had not meant to say that the thief would be with him in paradise today there would have been no need for Jesus to even mention "today".
He would have said:
(Luke 23:43 KJV) And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, shalt thou be with me in paradise.
This is a case of taking one or two verses and trying to make it fit SDA theology
Ellen White explains:
Jesus did not promise the penitent thief that he should go with Him, upon the day
of their crucifixion, to Paradise; for He Himself did not ascend to His Father until
three days afterward. See John 20:17. But He declared unto him, “I say unto thee
today” — meaning to impress the fact upon his mind, that at that time, while
enduring ignominy and persecution, He had the power to save sinners. . . .
it was His divine right to promise that day to the repentant, believing malefactor, “Thou
shalt be with Me in Paradise.”—3SP 157, 158, with an editorial footnote on p.
157 reading: “By placing the comma after the word today, instead of after the
word thee, as in the common versions, the true meaning of the text is more
apparent.”
