Since when/why is looking at someone's profile described as "perving"?

Why would you put up a profile on a public website if you didn't want people to see it?

I'll agree that's pervy (though not illegal).

So...are you saying that when a person talks about someone else "perving" her profile, she's just assuming that everyone who visits is...err...engaging in that sort of activity?

I believe the term came about early on when you could see who was looking at your profile. There didn't use to be the ability to turn that function off.

It was used primarily for people who looked at your profile every day, for weeks on end. It was creepy when people did that and you were aware they were doing it.

Now people can do it privately without your knowing they're doing it. Still creepy.

So, am I the only one who reads negative connotations into it?

Is it a term like "stalking your Facebook" that has lost the negative charge originally associated with the word?

it's "internet" slang for looking at someone's profile (FB or otherwise) when there's no good reason to..or as we just to say "just looking"

my mom wanted to check up on some of my hometown friends on FB to "catch up" on what's going on with them (which of her long time friends there have died, etc)..I slipped with the "perving" comment..she said 'yeah I guess..it's more snooping though"

I've never heard it in any context but this site. And, I have about thirty active social media accounts (I used to work in Internet marketing). I hear the word "stalking" tossed around in that context a lot, but "perv" just here.

I've seen some posters here in the forums use the word perved out of context for example I've seen some posters say I perved them when all I did was click on their profile to block them.

Using the word "perving" shouldn't be taken as seriously as it sounds. It's more of a joke that's been taken out of context. A good reason not to follow trends on using words, wearing clothes, or accessories.

If you look at a profile based on the picture first you have just perved them

I've heard it on POF and FB..and another site..Mingle I think? usually in reference to dating/single's dating profiles.

benign in it's relevance to someone's online dating profile..but not benign in the Cosby or Jared of Subway kind of way (not sure if he's guilty too but he always gave me the creeps)

I rarely look at profiles at all, but when I do it's usually based on that person having said something interesting in the forums or the content of a message they've sent me. I've never tried the "shop by photo" approach--it gives me nothing to work with.

I think it's more so meant for those who repeatedly look at your page and NEVER initiate. Or those that have tried, was turned down yet keep coming back. It's sort of assumed they're coming back fantasizing, masturbating, you know... "perving."

I thought that some who say that meant they have checked out your profile.

I had one man awhile back telling me it means you send each other nude pics & he sent me one. I told him it doesn't mean that to me, I didn't ask for his nude pic, & he wasn't getting one of me in return.

I look at profiles all the time particularly when people write something on the forums, .. I read their profiles and also look at their pics, to get a little insight into them and perhaps give reason to what/why/etc to what they wrote on the forums.

(But I have the 'viewed profile' feature turned off.)

huh I guess that makes me a perv LOL

i think it started long before this site even existed
referring looking at someones profile and not wanting them to know you were looking
more peeking tom like than anything

way back when these sort of sites started couldn't see that
then the feature came around

so probably came from then... ppl that didn't know the feature was all of a sudden active

now it's jes the way the cool kids speak

jes my shot in the dark guess

Words are defined by how people use them, not by what the originator of the words meant.

In the case of "perving," I've watched carefully, and have determined that the current meaning of "perving" when it comes to looking at profiles, is this:

* if you are attracted to the person who looks at your profile more than once (or who you think does, but who didn't, and the system software just makes it look as though they did), that's called "shy adoration."

* if you are NOT attracted to the person who views your profile more than once, it's "perving."

As for the reason for dramatic overstatement in general, that's due to childhood misunderstandings being carried unexamined into adulthood.

Specifically, when we are little kids and we complain about something to our tired frustrated parents, they tell us it's no big deal. So we learn to wildly exaggerate everything, with the thought that if we cry or yell and pout as though the world is coming to an end, the powers that be will decide in our favor instead of impatiently telling us to shut up in some manner.

This stops working soon after our parents figure out what we are trying to do, but many people never get it out of their heads that fussing like a three year old just makes people avoid dealing with them.
