I remember it being taught as theory in my public school tenth grade biology class, 1968-69. But I suspect that it is taught as fact in some places.
Once again, Sail Dancer, when you resort to personal insults you seriously weaken your argument. Try sticking to the issue being discussed. You'll be more influential that way.

You have to or your students will teach it to you. This is the nature of truth.
Gen1:26 "Let us make man in our image"
A mature and honest man will know that it is arrogant and immature to think our 40,000 years,(give or take a few million), of known existence, is virtually nothing in relation to the known vastness of time and space of the universes known existence. Of course there is life more evolved than we know of. So, the question, is the Lord God as benign as our science should be?
One day I may refrain from stepping on an ant, another day it may not enter my thoughts.

How do you justify capitalizing on that which you claim the Lord God created and provided?
How do you explain the hypocrisy of a loving God and suffering if not necessary for growth/evolution?
Why not other convenient stories like santa clause and the easter bunny or maybe something from ancient times when the earth was still considered flat?
And what of the factual evidence?
Chuckle. I once tried on a cloak of deceit but I found the threads of malice wore my self out.
