It's just a word that describes anyone who does not believe in God. It isn't a group of affiliated persons, though I'm sure there is some group somewhere that acts as a collection point.

Atheists ave always existed. In fact from the perspective of not believing in a god, many people are atheists, including you. If you deny the existence of Zeus, Odin, Jupiter, Quetzalcoatl, then you are atheistic towards them. An old cliche says, I just disbelieve in one more god than you do.

There is no 'group' that started atheism, not one that preaches or recruits. Some of us were raised with atheistic parents, some of us arrived at our atheism though logic and critical thought.

Quote from valion:

I said: "You have just provided an example of my comments. In most translations, the word is kill. By using it to mean murder, you are interpreting the bible."

you replied: Well. I asked not to mince words, but you insist in doing that to try to prove your point, which shows you cling to be flimsiest of excuses to deny reality.

Don't get me wrong. I could care less if you are an atheist. God seems to care though, and He wants me to try to shed light unto others. I try, but you have to have something to work with.

Hope that atheism thing works out for you.

I don't understand what you are a saying here, or what flimsy excuse I am clinging to.

If I recall correctly this discussion was about people making up their own rules or following an ancient text. What I am saying is that, even if you want to follow the text, you must chose selectively and interpret what you are reading. I then gave an example where interpretation is necessary. Where is the flimsy excuse that I am using to deny reality?

As far as atheism 'working out'. It's working just fine.

Have you ever heard of Pascal's Wager?

"It makes more sense to believe in God than to not believe. If you believe, and God exists, you will be rewarded in the afterlife. If you do not believe, and He exists, you will be punished for your disbelief. If He does not exist, you have lost nothing either way. "

There are a number of flaws in this, as it does not consider the possibility of other gods. If the correct god is not the christian god, you've lost as well.

Another way to look at this is called the Atheist;s Wager:

"It is better to live your life as if there are no Gods, and try to make the world a better place for your being in it. If there is no God, you have lost nothing and will be remembered fondly by those you left behind. If there is a benevolent God, He will judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in Him."

Classic, I will address your contentions, point by point.

"""I said: "You have just provided an example of my comments. In most translations, the word is kill. By using it to mean murder, you are interpreting the bible."""

When understanding the Scriptures one must realize you cannot take any one statement and assume that is the definitive passage to explain it. You must examine all Scriptures pertaining to the subject to see the clear message from them all, as any one passage could be misconstrued. This collection of books was written by many authors over the course of thousands of years. It is translated from several very disparate languages as well. There are many examples of why you must do it this way that I will not point out at this time.

I have had much experience in contract language, and I assure you it is very painstaking to set the words of any language so there is absolutely no doubt to meaning. When you throw translations into the mix the problem is compounded immensely.

You grasp the word "kill" to support your contention and say I am interpreting by saying murder is the truer meaning. Numerous other Scriptures prove the concept of murder is more appropriate there.

Additionally, most translations of the Bible do use the word "murder". The New King James version uses "murder" for instance (completed in 1982). The Authorized King James version, first published in 1611 AD is perhaps the version you are clinging to for your point about the word "kill".

""""As far as atheism 'working out'. It's working just fine.""""

Well, it would work okay, NOW.

""""If the correct god is not the christian god, you've lost as well.""""

Christians, Jews and Muslims all believe in the same God. That is easily half the population of the Earth (53%). The next largest group believing in another "god" would be Hindus at 13%. (Atheists are about 2% btw)

So I guess you 2% could be right and the 53% could be wrong. Kind of amazing that with all the religions that have come and gone in the history of man, that half of the 6 billion people on Earth could believe in the same One True God. And this has endured for many hundreds if not thousands of years.

This is exactly what I have been talking about throughout this. GOD MAKES THE RULES; YOU DON'T. That's what being God is. You get to say how it is without being second guessed by inferiors!

Do you think, since He created the whole universe, He might have an edge on your average atheist?

So you can say with your human logic, "He will judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in Him", but that is you making the rules. That is you saying what He will do with ZERO evidence that this is the case except your own reasoning and desires.

I believe in a number of gods. The Bible is clear that there are multiple gods. I believe in only One True God.

You are still focusing on only a part of what I am saying.

There is a need for you and others to interpret the bible to determine how you believe your god intends you to act in a given circumstance. This is what started the conversation. The bible cannot be used as an exact guide to actions or moral or ethical decisions in today's word without interpretation. Each and every christian must decide for themselves which aspects they will use as principles.

As far as kill vs murder, you still have to deal with the issue of whether or not in the bible your god commits, condones or sanctions murder, or killing or whatever. If it says thou shat not murder, in what sense destroying an entire city and killing or murdering all of the inhabitants not a contradiction of that commandment?

""""As far as atheism 'working out'. It's working just fine.""""

Well, it would work okay, NOW.

There is absolutely nothing to suggest that it will not continue to do so.

""""If the correct god is not the christian god, you've lost as well.""""

The number of people who believe something has nothing to do with it's veracity. For thousands of years, men believed the earth was the centre of the universe. That did not make them right. The reasoning of one person, or a few with evidence to back their claims is worth more than the empty beliefs of millions.

It is only in your belief system that god makes the rules.

Do you think, since He created the whole universe, He might have an edge on your average atheist?

There are perfectly natural explanations as to the origins of the universe. There is no need to introduce the supernatural.

I had coffee today with a man who I know to be an atheist, I also KNOW he was there. I think he has an edge on a being that does not exist.

So you can say with your human logic, "He will judge you on your merits and not just on whether or not you believed in Him", but that is you making the rules. That is you saying what He will do with ZERO evidence that this is the case except your own reasoning and desires.

Reasoning and logic will lead to the simple conclusion that there is no evidence for any god. To suppose that a mythological entity makes rules that are beyond our understanding, but by which we must live our lives in order to have a mythological afterlife, doesn't seem like logical reasoning to me.
