Let's say you have been dating a 36-year-old woman for 6 months and during one of your pillow talk sessions, she admitted to having 5 abortions. Would you continue to date her or would your feeling change for the worse?

I know that this is for the guys, but I had to put my 2 cents in before the fur starts to fly: Abortion is NEVER an acceptable method of birth control...if you can't control yourself or you're too stupid to not use birth control...a rubber CANNOT break 5 times...then consider getting yourself neutered...

I agree with Metu. There's just no excuse for that many abortions. I guess in Russia, the Average amount of abortions is 7 per woman. What are they thinking?

Yes, but what if she was young and not capable of taking care of these children? Does the fact that she had prior abortions disqualify her from having children in the future?
What if she is ready to have children now?

Well, I would have to know the reasons I guess, but I would not condemn a woman outright for it or not want to explore a relationship if everything is very good between us... Sometimes I guess there could be reasons... How's this, I am the least political person you'll ever meet, to me adoption is a better alternative if a woman can carry the baby to term... SOMETIMES there may be a medical reason... I hope this clears it up for you...

If the abortions have left her barren (which frequently happens with that many, sometimes one botched one is enough) - no.

Your absolutely right...Just because you CAN reach into the cookie jar, should you?
Just because you can do something, doesnt always mean you have to. But, to not give people the power to choose, its almost impairing their right to free will.
Its a fine line, and I understand the conriversy about pro life/choice
On subject...I dont know if it would be a dealbreaker, and I dont think anyone can answer that truthfuly. I think with 5 being the number, some one would have to walk in those shoes to even begin to understand the toxicity of that situation

OK, how's this; if the number were truly five and she confided this in me, I would take pause to think how the hell this can happen and wonder how she got herself in that position... If there was a good enough explanation or medical reason and she was still functioning as a productive person, capable of love, why should I condemn her, as someone else stated I never walked in her shoes, who am I to judge...

I don't have to get knocked up 5 times & then have 5 abortions to erase that mistake, to state my opinion. I would not want to walk in an uneducated woman's shoes...
There are Family Planning Centers all over the U.S. that give out free birth control... If a woman cannot CONTROL herself, she can at least CONTROL getting pregnant... FIVE abortions is despicable. JMO

You are correct. My question is going to require everyone to search deep within and think about this situation. It is not a far-fetched as it seems but rather a very deep and personal situation that could be a possibility.
I hear all the time on the forums about love this and love that and the things I would do for love. Is sacrificing your sense of mortality for a person you love something we are capable or even willing to do?

and would I date the guy who just confessed to me that he was an escaped convict who was doing 5 life sentences for 5 murders? If those murders weren't even his fault? He just didn't know any better, found himself in a bad place, caught up with bad people.... really, now he knows better.... (yes, I am likening abortion to murder for the sake of my argument)

Eowwww! If I were a guy, that would have been established at the very beginning of the relationship before it went even one more hour or one more day further.
One abortion is just as horrible as five...but they say after the first one, each consecutive one gets easier and easier until the conscience of the person is completely seared.
Murder is murder whether you've only murdered one person or five....I guess that would make the person a serial killer.
If guys could conceive and had the capability of giving birth to a child...that would be one of the first things I would know about him. The second would be, do you have AIDS or any other STD?
That would be considered a major weakness on the part of the person I was dating. Insanity is performing the same thing over and over and expecting different results each time. If that person didn't figure it out after the first one.....the fifth??!!
Warts, whatever.

I think that is a personal issue.I would start wondering why she did this.Maybe she was unfaithful and didnt want to find out whos baby it was.If just didnt want children it would be understandable. However a doctor will only allow 3 abortions as far as I know.
After that there is a chance a scar tissue building up and other complication that may even result in death. If you dont mind a women that going to be having health problems down road I guess it doesnt matter.I for one do not agree with abortion unless some type of medical emergency arises or they are raped. The raped part I would have some red flags put up though,As any women can claim it was unwanted sex.

Abortion is not an easy topic of conversation- anytime, anywhere- because it deals with our basic morality.
I had a conversation recently with a very, very good friend about abortion- and it was enlightening.
You have to wonder, tho, about a woman who has had 5 abortions and then tells her current lover during pillow talk... what is going thru her mind at that moment? Is she looking for absolution? Is she looking for consolation? Is she only beginning to come to terms with her past decisions?
As a previous poster mentioned, a guy would be thinking what kind of slut has 5 abortions- and I can see that thinking.
But, I think there is a lot more to it. I'm hardly pro-abortion, but for someone to have made that choice 5 times- if she was not disturbed prior to making those choices, she probably is a bit now.
It would take a very, very strong relationship to be able to come to terms with all that those 5 decisions represent. JMO

At no point has anyone said let's go kill them. It is a fact of life..It happens everyday.
The question is still the same...Would if affect your relationship? In your case change it from dating to a very close friend that confided in you. Would you turn your back in disgust or help her work thru her issues?

this debate is for another thread... lol
the time of conception is when many believe life begins. when the sperm meets the egg and they embrace
I believe that an abortion is "safest" during the first trimester- the first 3 months. I don't even think it's legal after that... unless there's is a danger to child or mother, but then some don't consider it an abortion as such. The decision to end the pregnancy was for other reasons.

It's not so much a physical thing because the body can recover from surgery, even five times, its a matter of that persons lack of morals and their lack of judgement. That would be like drowning a bag of kittens. What kind of person would DO that?
I wouldn't hook up with anyone who had such deep set emotional and mental problems. Seems like, even though the questions may not be asked on the first date...if the dude could just wait and keep it in his pants...after the second or third date...the insecurities, the weirdness would start to manifest itself in other ways...
Trouble is, most guys can't see past a set of boobs and a pair of legs. Sorry, guys, no offense intended, but do you ever look at a woman and think about what kind of PERSON she may or may not be?? Just wondering.

Quote from missmmeoftheday:Abortion is not an easy topic of conversation- anytime, anywhere- because it deals with our basic morality.
JMO

Great point. Do you turn your back or do you try to come to terms and understand the decisions behind this choice? Would you be willing to throw everything away because of prior judgments made earlier in that person's life?

Angel - that is a good point.
Most certainly an abortion past a certain time frame, would be a travesty against a human life. Obviously the moralists argue when is a 'fetus" a human being ?
I personally think abortion is Ok but not beyond 7-8 weeks.
Age old question. But there are exceptions (such as rape and so forth), which make it a good solution.

I could be wrong...I thought a fetus wasnt actually, technically a child until 3 months, so before then, what is the problem?
Again, just a simple question, please dont get all pissy...please
That's a question that has bothered me for a long time. "Technically" it isn't a child...I've also heard the term "potential human being"...what a load of shit that is! Yet if someone murders a pregnant woman, he is charged with TWO murders...explain that one to me!

I wouldn't hook up with anyone who had such deep set emotional and mental problems. Seems like, even though the questions may not be asked on the first date...if the dude could just wait and keep it in his pants...after the second or third date...the insecurities, the weirdness would start to manifest itself in other ways...

I hate to play Devil's Advocate......
But if it's a legal and accepted practice, why would you assume there is weirdness or insecurities involved?

Quote from lust4love:I think that is a personal issue.I would start wondering why she did this.Maybe she was unfaithful and didnt want to find out whos baby it was.If just didnt want children it would be understandable.

Only if you were in love with this person then you would be willing to help and try to understand this decision?

legal does not equate to accepted.
and for many, the belief is that life begins at the moment of conception.

Your saying that love can not exsit prior to 6 months? Had it been a year or ten years then it would matter?

Yes, I do not think you can "love" anyone in 6 months...I think that "loving" too earley could be one of the factors in having abortions...Or just being careless
